Being a caterer/baker myself I was super excited to check out Brown Bear Baking and "treat" our group to some of their bakes. Sadly we were pretty disappointed in 2/3 of our purchases. First of all, the sticky bun was underbaked, doughy with no spring to the roll. I will say that their "sticky" was delicious. On the other end of the spectrum the blueberry peach almond coffee cake was burnt and extremely dry. My daughter did enjoy her peanut butter cream filled sandwich cookie so, points for that. What makes me sad is that I am not sure when I will get a chance to return to see if it was an off day for them and also, food prices are SO high it is disappointing to basically throw away $15 worth of food. Lastly, I am not sure what it is...but what happened to "service with a smile"?....it seemed lacking at most of the places we patronized yesterday.

The chairs are mot the most comfortable, maybe to discourage people from camping here and taking up space while waiting for their friends/family to finish shopping. This is a good alternative for coffee if you don't want to go to the super busy Timmy and Starbucks here.

We walk in and are both intrigued by the apparently freshly baked croissants and pain au chocolats and the crazy good looking muffins. In a time of needing a place to sit and chat in the shade, and all places are closed, what does one…read moredo? one finds this awesome little hidden gem of a cafe, grabs a snack and a drink and sits under the parasol. Although sunny that day, the temperature was rather cool. The staff there were very accommodating and turned on the big heater for us to talk in the warmth. It was a great little office space outside, where business transactions could be accomplished. As you enter the premises, you are greeted by Phil the Tip Jar, a very cute play on words which makes it hard to not give in, and fill the tip jar. Now about the food... no complaints here. I got exactly what I expected... a healthy tasty light meal. I got the avocado toast which even came with sprouts on top to make it feel and taste healthier. My drink was delicious as well, though it's not hard to make tea :) the price is not bad at all for the quality. the ambiance is homey and comfortable. definitely felt at home. The mainland it's a doggy dog world to survive. Here it's just relaxing, open at 9 ish, two hour siestas and close at 5. We just dealt with a 17 hour commute from east coast to the west coast, slept barely, was up and out the door at 6 am to catch our ferry to Friday Harbor, only for it to be canceled and delayed until 740 pm. At this point I just wanted coffee. Nobody was opened except these people. I had a mocha latte and a blueberry scone which was the BEST scone that I've ever tasted before. Better than Starbucks warmed up. Thanks to this place for doing it right.
