The atmosphere of the ambulance these people are from Italy and their food shows it. It is mouthwatering out of this world. . You feel like you're actually in Italy it's so nice in there. Everybody should go to this place and experience it.. 5 Yumms...!!!! Family owned. This is one of them restaurants. I passed 1 million times. I met a helpful sommelier whose parents emigrated from Italy to Philadelphia. Looking for the inside scoop, I asked what his favorite Italian restaurant is. Portobello Cafe. So we went! The restaurant has a charming and casual vibe. Both gentlemen tending the floor are from Italy, adding an air of authenticity. You can choose to sit outdoors -- I really like the way the patio is arranged --or in the cozy dining room. Once seated, you're brought a plate of roasted peppers and a basket of hard rolls. I sprinkled olive oil and grated salt on the plate, which proved a good idea with the peppers and rolls. There were a number of appetizer specials, but we went with a basic Caesar salad. One order, pre-apportioned in the kitchen, was perfect for the two of us. I ordered branzino as an entree T, linguini Pescatore. The whole fish is brought out and fileted tableside. While I took a photo, it was just one unflattering shot of the head (which I'm not posting.) The branzino was mild and flakey, good, though the seasoning didn't break through the skin rendering it a little bland. Excellent grilled potatoes and vegetables completed my dinner. My husband's linguini was delish; while the pasta isn't made in house, it tasted like it could be, served al dente, of course. The tomato sauce was spicy enough to bring the dish over the top. Portobello is byob. (Another Yelper mentioned an $8 corkage fee, but unless they forgot to charge us, they disbanded the policy.) After our meal, with takeout box packed -- there was a lot of fish -- we were offered amaretto as a digestif. A nice touch! The restaurant isn't all that convenient to where we live but we enjoyed dinner enough to warrant a repeat visit. Next time I'll try something Italian. Or maybe salmon, which looked pretty good. Prego! Delicious FRESH Italian food that you will crave the next day. Tomato sauce is authentic- garlicky, not canned, fresh basil that they grow in the window of the kitchen. We got mussels, artichoke and sautéed spinach that was DIVINE, and buratta salad. Pellegrino sparkling water with lime lemon. Cozy seating and AMAZING customer service. I also had the grilled branzino that was de-boned tableside. Half a lemon and fresh EVOO to drizzle on top. I absolutely love this gem. This is a great family place, date night spot, celebration spot. I really like this restaurant- they made me penne with vodka sauce. I can't wait to come back!!! read more

Stopped in on the way to the airport as we were in town for business. The place was empty during the lunch hours so it made me a little nervous at first. Guessing this is busy during dinner. Greeted and served by what appeared to be the owner. He was very nice, provided recommendations and very proud of their restaurant(in a good way). For apps had the burrata and garlic bread. It was all really good and the meal was served with hot fresh bread. I had the salmon which had a nice flaky crust and seasoning. The veggies were likely tossed likely in olive oil and cooked perfectly. This is a place I would go out of my way to eat again. read more

Hidden gem!!! I am local to the restaurant and have been coming here for years with family. Not enough people know about this place. If you're looking for authentic Italian, this is a place to be. Everything is very fresh and super delicious. I have tried countless things off the menu and everything is so delicious every time. From the moment you walk in, you'll feel like you're in little Italy. With table cloth and all the tables, you will have an elevated experience. A cozy local Italian restaurant that's been around a while. The food is really good. We sat outside on this most recent trip. Penne Vodka with Crab is probably their best dish. We also had the Cafe Portobello Pasta which is Fettucine, mushrooms (very fresh), and chicken, with Alfredo sauce. You get a basket of rolls before your entrees come out. $8 corkage fee to unscrew a bottle of wine which when poured was spilled on the table. While tables around us had their glasses topped off...we did not! Although that was minimum compared to the actual meal itself... Ordered special appetizer Burrata with tomato- Fried Calamari as starters very clearly told the "waiter" DO NOT BRING them out together...they came out together... Calamari was borderline raw...ZERO salt and pepper and white...not slightly brown...or crispy like it should be. After that was cleared the $18 burrata with unripe tomatoes followed... my fault for ordering tomatoes in late November...their fault for having on the menu... So time for dinner! Ordered the Veal Parmigiana once again very clearly and politely asked for light sauce!! Did not happen and the veal itself tasted rancid with once again no salt or pepper....(even a fry cook at McDonald's knows the importance of seasoning food out of the fryer) so when some other "waiter" asked if I wanted a box I told him no and said there was way to much sauce on it...his response was "all you people around here like lots of sauce"... I DO NOT!!! I guess the really sad part there was an older couple sitting next to us, and the waiter said OK I'm gonna say the specials only once...since your close... you all can hear me... unfortunately, the older gentleman did not hear the waiter and when he asked for him to repeat the specials it's seemed to be a complete annoyance...but rudely responded. Yum! The food here is quality. The condiments are quality and vibe with the atmosphere. Definitely a good place to enjoy good food or take someone you've been dating for awhile or maybe are really into. I went with a former friend here. I have another former friend who is vegetarian and he felt there were enough options for him. Of course, you should make sure you pick something with mushrooms in it as they don't call it "Portobello" for nothing. The place was cute on the inside, reminds me of a classic Italian restaurant. However the location is a bit awkward. I went here for lunch and I believe the waiter was the owner/manager. He was okay, but could be a bit better. The food was delicious, I had the lobster ravioli and ordered the eggplant parm to go for hubby. He enjoyed his entree as well. This is probably our 4th visit. The service and food are consistently good once one bonds with the server. Servers are either family or longtime staff members so they know the menu, know what's fresh and will recommend based on that basis. Our outdoor table was beautiful. This place never disappoints! I have been here a few times, and during covid and everything is amazing. I'm not sure what is better - the food or the staff!! I got the eggplant parm and it was amazing. My friends got the raviolis, lobster raviolis, and the fettuccine portobello cafe. Everything was sooo good!!! Did not disappoint. Absolutely amazing! I felt like I went on vacation to Positano as soonest I walk into this cozy restaurant. Oh dear Amalfi coast I miss u :D food was fresh like it just came out of the sea. We ordered clams, mussels and fried calamari for appetizer. Each bite was delicious. For main course I ordered fresh pasta with lobster and shrimp on pink sauce Yuummmy!!!!! My friend ordered a fish and she loved it. Pascual was so detailed oriented and made our experience exceptional. He was funny and personable. I am really excited that this restaurant is here. It's super duper close to our house and the food was great. I'm happy to not have to drive to Media or Springfield to have a nice dinner. My husband and I went here on Friday night for his birthday. We had a 7:00 reservation but we didn't need it since there were plenty of open tables when we arrived. My immediate reaction to this place was that it seems like you're eating in someone's house. It's very cozy and you're really close to the people that are sitting around you. The wait staff were very friendly and attentive, except that our water glasses were never refilled. That was really my one main complaint. My husband drinks a lot of water and he ended up taking mine because he ran out. Onto the food... the fried mozzarella was amazing. It was clearly just nice thick slices of fresh mozzarella with barely any fry on the outside. It was perfect. Not your typical "mozzarella stick." The mussels in red sauce were delicious and the sauce was great to dunk bread into. My only other complaint, aside from the water not being refilled, is that two of my mussels were sandy. I think they needed to be cleaned a little better than they were, but I'm willing to overlook it because the other things we had were so good. The portobello ravioli was so hearty and rich I couldn't finish it. The sauce was so thick and creamy it was just heavy, heavy, heavy. In a good way, though! My husband got the filet oscar and loved every second of it. The meat was cooked to perfection and the roasted potatoes he got as a side were clearly shower-fried, because they had this crisp on the outside that can't be achieved just from roasting. It's not fair to judge that day but it was the same as usual. Had calamari, bruschetta. And buratta as appetizers. They were all ok. My wife and I noticed that the blue water glasses appeared to not be washed or something. It was quite obvious that, along the rims where you drink from, they had multiple finger prints and what looked like lip marks on one of them. If it wasn't lip marks then someone had nasty fingers when they washing or setting up the table for service. We very politely brought it to the attention of the waiter and he was quite rude and asked "what are you looking at?" As if we were idiots even mentioning it. Didn't even apologize. He didn't even look at the glasses and set them aside on a different table. My guess is to put them right back onto our table or another. He poured water into our wine glasses and said "there is that okay?" He mumbled something in Italian as he walked away, probably something unpleasant. At least Olive Garden has clean water glasses. This place is incredible. My wife and I met anther couple here because it was a midpoint place to meet, and we could not have been more surprised at the quality of the food and depth of flavors. The peppers you get to accompany your garlic bread before you order, are perfectly spicy and delicious. We ordered the clams casino which was ok to me, but others really enjoyed. We also got the melon and prosciutto which was stunning. Really great quality prosciutto. For dinner we each ordered something different. The highlights were the Cioppino, the branzino, and the double cut pork chop with figs and goat cheese. The branzino was de-boned tableside and cubed in lemon and olive oil. Stunning presentation. The Cioppino was a very sizeable portion with a ton of seafood and a favorful broth. I could smell it from across the table. I ordered the double cut pork chop with figs and goat cheese and could eat that once a week. Perfectly cooked. Great presentation. Sage was the perfect addition. Paired well with lightly coated sage potatoes. I've eaten at every top restaurant in center city, and put this place on my hidden gems list. It's BYOB, great food, and old school ambiance. Get a reservation, and check this place out. Parking is painful if it's your first time there but there are definitely plenty of spots to park.
