Ordering was pretty easy, kiosk or counter, take your pick. The rodeo burger caught my attention immediately. It was first introduced to me by a friend who said, if you've never tried, you most certainly have to! The onion rings and barbecue sauce changes the whole game for a burger. Thinking about it has me salivating. Honestly. You can get it regular or as a double and no going back as soon as you've had it! I paired my burger wth chili cheese fries. I'm regretting not adding the jalapeños to it. They had this lemon cake milkshake that is absolutely delicious. There's actual cake in that that shake! I noticed that they offer catering too. Order pickup shelving were also nearby. There is a huge dining area with tables snd chairs as well as booths. Even outdoor seating. Last time it was a Chicago Combo Bowl that did not contain sausage The time before that it was a cheeseburger with mayo after I told the girl in the drive lane NO mayo. Today ... 4:40pm ... a big beef WITH mozzarella and gravy on the side did not have either ... no cheese; no gravy What are customers supposed to do if the receipt says the correct items .... pull over in the parking lot; unwrap everything in the car then get back in line to point out the error? Visited Portillo's while in Gilbert. The atmosphere was lively and spacious, and the service was efficient, though the ordering process felt a bit unclear. Who doesn't love a new spot -- it's a big space, and while I've been to the downtown Chicago location which has that nostalgic charm, this one is honestly nicer and more polished. Tried the Italian beef -- good value, and while the taste was decent, it didn't quite hit the mark for me. The ordering was a bit confusing as I expected it to automatically come with giardiniera, and had to go back up to ask for it. This was on our must try places to eat considering 90% of the restaurants that we've tried lately have been terrible. Portillo's did not disappoint. We were in the area for a medical procedure that I was having done so we came in to finally try it. I ordered the cheese burger combo with no sauce it came just the way I ordered it. The meat patty was not over seasoned like alot of burger places and the French fries were served nice and hot not too salty. My boyfriend ordered the same thing and enjoyed it alot. We didn't get a chance to try the chocolate cake I was already higher than a kite from being sedated from my neck injection and just really needed to lay down. We loved the decor inside the store itself was clean and the staff was friendly and helpful. Recently I added some meat back in to my diet, and Portillo's hands down has the best chicken sandwich! The drive thru was both friendly and fast. The exterior is very clean, and looks to be a newer location. I'll definitely return when in the area or stop at one of their other locations as they have a plant-based dog I do when avoiding meat or this when I can tolerate some meat. The hotdog didn't have much flavor and kind of disappeared in each bite. The fries were also decent. I tried hubbies Maxwell polish and it was good. If I return, I'll see if I can swap out the polish for the hotdog. Loved the store decor and oldie but goodie music. Takes you back in time. As I type, I think I may go grab a chocolate shake to go. I'm generally a fan of Portillo's. I like this new location since they have an abundance of booths and offer touchscreens for ordering. The Good: *I love their chili cheese dogs. They have generous amounts of chili, the dog has a good snap to it and the poppy seed bun is always fresh. *I joined their rewards program and was pleased to see items drop into my account - like a free slice of cake for my half birthday and a free Italian Beef sandwich for no reason at all. We really appreciated that. *I attended an event to try their salads (something I normally wouldn't order) and was pleasantly surprised at how fresh and good they were. The Not So Good: *I tried something different (the Beef and Cheddar Croissant) and was quite surprised by the lack of cheese on it. I even went up and asked an employee because at first glance, it looked like someone barely sprinkled any on it. They explained that they put most of the cheese wrapped inside the beef but even after I dug around it seemed minimal. For an ingredient that receives co-top billing in the sandwich I thought that was kind of a ripoff and probably wouldn't order it again. Food - Italian beef. I thought it had good flavor and wasn't too salty. The bread had a nice spongy texture to it. The bread wasn't soggy. The beef didn't have a lot of fatty pieces, which I liked. Here's how they describe it on their website. "[Their] famous, homemade, Italian beef is slow-roasted for 4 hours, with a blend of Italian spices, thinly sliced, and served on fresh baked Turano French bread. Customized to your liking by adding home-cooked sweet peppers, hot giardiniera peppers, and as much of [their] secretly-spiced gravy as you'd like! The peppers are extra. You pay extra for the peppers. They also say the following on their website. "The standard sandwich is served by splashing a bit of [their] flavorful, secretly-spiced gravy on it. Some like their sandwich "dipped," which means [they] dip the whole sandwich in [their] gravy. You can also order it "dry," with very little gravy. Why do [they] call it gravy? Because it's actual gravy, just like grandma used to serve: [They] use the beef's natural gravy that comes off of it while roasting for four hours." Their gravy is good. It is not thick. I found it to have a more runny texture, which I did not mind. The gravy had flavor and was not overly salty. I recommend getting it on the side so your Italian beef sandwich doesn't get soggy. If you eat fast that you can get it dipped or wet. Atmosphere - No strange or strong odors or smells. I did not visit the restroom. It was a little busy inside. Many the tables were filled. Service - I was able to order on their electronic kiosk at the front. I loved the large screen. The service here was fairly quick. Order and pay at the counter or kiosk. Self seating. You pick up your order at the second window. Parking - Surface parking lot. No parking meter or parking structures. Would love if they have covered parking with solar panels or plants in the future. If you're from the Chicagoland area, you know what this place is all about. If you're not, this is where you're going to get an authentic Chicago style hot dog. Having lived most of my life in Chicagoland, it's nearly impossible to have never eaten at a Portillo's. I went to this location on a Sunday and was pleasantly surprised to find that it wasn't that crowded at all. Usually there's a line around the building going into a Portillo's but I guess in Arizona, it's different. This location is a bit off the beaten path but not hard to find. The manager was very accommodating when I had a request, and the service was quick. I can't come here without getting an Italian beef and a chopped salad, so that's what it was today. This review is specifically for their salads. I'm not a fan of their other stuff (personal preference) but the salads, they are actually really good! I shared the Greek salad and Spicy Chicken salad with my friends and since then they've came back by themselves to get more. The spicy chicken salad is my favorite as there is a lot of ingredients in it, notable little pastas. It is very filling. I would recommend for people who are on the go. We ordered the Italian Beef, fries, chopped salad and drinks from the young lady at the counter rather than from the kiosk. Unfortunately she seemed to be very abrupt regarding talking our order. We knew exactly what we were ordering so we didn't stand at the counter waffling and trying to decide. The sandwich and salad were very good. Fries must have been sitting around awhile waiting for other food items to be prepared as they were room temperature. Don't have old fries ready for serving especially when the restaurant of the food isn't ready. The dining area was extremely loud and then adding the order numbers being called out unintelligibly (it sounded like the mic was inside the persons mouth) it made it hard to enjoy our meal. I like this Portillo's location near SanTan Village in Gilbert. It is a 7,800 square-foot space that has a retro garage theme to it. It also has a large parking lot. Portillo's is a chain that originated in Chicago in the early 60's and are known for their Chicago-style hot dogs. There are lots of photos on the wall that pay homage to their early days. Besides their hot dogs, I love the Italian Beef with Peppers, Onion Rings, Broiled Chicken Sandwich and the Chocolate Cake Shake. I recently came here and got to try one of their new salads off their menu. My first Portillo's experience was actually in Chicago. I remember trying my first Chicago-style dog and really enjoying it. Ever since my first trip to the Windy City back in 2012, Portillo's locations have been popping up all over the Valley. We have a lot of people from Chicago that live here and lately AZ has become home to many of their restaurants. When the employees call your number, they like to do it in a rhyme over the microphone. I came here last night and ordered an Italian beef sandwich with a cheese fry from the drive thru. Not even 15 minutes after I was done eating I felt extremely sick. The lady in the drive thru refused to work with me and was very rude. I ordered food online using the mobile app and my infant son fell asleep in the car so I tried to use the drive thru explaining that I already paid and would like to avoid going inside and taking my son out of his car seat to wake him up. She would not work with me with something as simple as walking 10 feet away grabbing a mobile order and handing it to me through the drive thru. I ended up having to come inside where I was the only order on the shelf and they purposely put it on the bottom shelf where I had to get down on my knees holding a sleeping child and grab an entire family's worth of food. This was a terrible experience and this place needs to hire more competent employees. I don't remember being this rude and negligent when I was working my first job as a teenager. I remember the days when the drive thru lines wrapped around the parking lot--now you can drive right up with no wait. That alone should've been a telling sign. I don't frequent often, but I was in the area and had a bday cake reward to use. The cake should've been free for my birthday, but apparently, the reward now expires within seven days. I missed it by just a few days, and they wouldn't make an exception. Then I knew something was off when they handed me a noticeably smaller bag. I checked to make sure both items were there and drove home, only to be even more disappointed. Prices have gone up, and portions have gone down. I ordered a chopped salad and a slice of cake. The salad used to be satisfying, but now it felt like a side dish. The amount of chicken and blue cheese was substantially reduced--barely enough to call it a proper meal. The cake looked like it had been dropped on the floor, and both the cake and the salad were tiny--more like kid-sized portions. Eating out just doesn't feel worth it anymore. Fun antiques and older posters/pictures scattered about. Ordered a jumbo Chicago dog with everything and onion rings. Good size and was just enough food for me, but my son needs 2 to fill up. Really tasty as they use high quality ingredients. The onion rings are crunchy and tasty as well. They have burgers, salads, desserts and a bar counter with limited selection (I think there were 3 or 4 beers on tap). Good variety of food and drink options for larger groups. Service seemed a little slow for how few people were there. Came to this location while visiting from out of town. Unfortunately, it wasn't the best experience. I ordered ahead and was told my order would be ready at 12:48pm and that it could take up to 10 more minutes once there. I got there at 12:52 and checked the Pick Up order section; my food wasn't there. I waited for some time, about 10 minutes, and a guy came over, asked my name. I told him and he turned around and grabbed my already packaged food from behind the Pick Up counter - where it had been sitting for at least 10-15 minutes just getting cold. It was also exceptionally loud in there. I got it home and much to my disappointment, it was missing a sandwich. So back to the restaurant we go, as no one answered the phone for several attempts. Once there, no one was available to help me at the Pick Up counter so I stood in the regular line. They made my missing burger, and did give a free slice of chocolate cake. Back home I go to eat the rest of my now, very cold, food. It was "meh". My beef sandwich was really cold, there was barely any au jus to dip it in (which was fine because it was also cold) and the cheese for the cheese fries was really cold. Gina's once irresistible chocolate cake is now so awful. The size has shrunk in half but the price has doubled and it tastes disgusting, like chemicals. It is not the "Gina's soon to be famous" chocolate cake I've eaten for decades. It's now "Infamous" because it is terrible! The Diet Coke tasted like they just cleaned the machine with cleaner and didn't get it all out. Typically, I understand bread is to be soft and chewable. The piece I received was so sub-standard, I wouldn't even give this to a dog. How insulting!! Whoever knowingly put this extreme toy small, hard piece of rock in my bag for human consumption should be educated. In fact, maybe THEY should try to eat this hard excuse for a side roll. I just cannot believe someone would actually think this was acceptable to give to a human being. Disappointing. The restaurant manager should re-educate their staff on what food is consumable & what food is NOT consumable.
