Porter Stable is awesome! I live in a really small apartment with a good size closet, but the closet had no shelves and a weak pole to hang my clothes. I have a lot of clothes and definitely needed to install some shelves. After months of trying to do it myself with disastrous results, I called Porter Stable for help. They were very fast in responding to my request. Actually came in the next day and went over what needed to be done with my closet. Installed the shelves and installed a new clothing pole and gave me some tips to make sure I don't damage any of the installations. They were efficient and didn't make a mess. I used Yelp to find a good handyman after a bought a condo in Jersey City. I wanted to get a desk built, hang some blinds, paint and hang my flat screen. Michael was great, he helped me with mounting a 51" plasma TV. I had virtually no studs (just a small metal stud) and with a lot of anchors and using the stud itself he was able to mount the TV. Did a nice tug test and held just right. TV has been up for a few days even with moving around and not a quarter inch of wiggle so far. I unfortunately dropped my ring down the sink a local west village watering hole this past Saturday night. After talking to the manager, I was comforted by the fact that they were going to bring in a handyman as soon as possible to pull my ring from the drain the following Monday. Monday night rolled around and I had not heard from the restaurant so I gave them a call. Long story short, I was told that I needed find a certified plumber before noon the following day.....a much different message than what was delivered a few days earlier! This place is the best and if you're thinking about hiring Best Buy...think twice and call Porter Stable! They pretty much do everything you need around the apartment that you can't do yourself. Especially me being a single girl in the city. They do lights, painting, fixtures, closets, storage...you name it. I couldn't hang my flat screen myself without probably breaking the TV into pieces. They came and installed everything and even fixed something for free that they noticed was wrong with my closet doors. Granted it was a quick fix but most people would have asked for the extra bucks. Mike is terrific, professional and friendly. He responded quickly, did what he said he would do, was neat, tidy and honest. First he helped me create an exhibit booth. He followed the design, picked up the wood, put it together and painted it! Later he came a hung the lights and created a few shelves from the wood we had leftover. I'd been having some problems with an old landlord (BEWARE SILVERSTONE PROPERTY) who was trying to steal our entire deposit with a fraudulent bill for work needed to be done to our apartment. I'd love to be able to mirror the positive reviews of the other yelpers on the site however, I was blown away at the lack of responsiveness to my multiple inquires and emails. I contacted Porter Stable on May 20th received an immediate response back saying he had time in mid-June. I immediately replied back on May 22 saying mid-June was perfect. Never heard a response. I finally emailed back on June 26th and got a response back a day later. Whomever replied had no prior recollection of our previous email exchange. Again I outlined exactly what I was looking to have done and replied back to the email on June 27. It is now almost September and I have given up and will find someone else. read more

I needed a handyman in Brooklyn (Cobble Hill), perused Yelp (brownstoner.com seems too self promotional and not easy to navigate for this), dropped Michael an email, we spoke about my projects and he came out a few days later as I was in no rush. The projects were to rebuild a closet, paint an outside door, fix some stairs, and remount an interior door and after reviewing, he had some ideas and said he could do it all and would get me pricing. I followed up with an email (hate relying on verbal agreements so eschewed cell) and a few days went by without a reply. No worries, it happens, so sent followup and he was back on it, came out with some minions a few days later and nailed every single project exactly as I requested, was neat, and timely. At one point they wanted to pain my outdoor door black instead of current white as requested but we nipped that and they recovered quickly and white it remained. Now frankly I could've done all of these projects myself but in about 100 times the time and would've likely screwed some of it up so money well spent and will use Michael (assuming it's just him and he gets temp help when he needs it) read more
