The atmosphere is a big part of the appeal. It feels like an ode to the San Pedro harbor and the area's history, with cool artifacts and details throughout. They also often have live acoustic music, which I really enjoy. One small downside: it can get loud when busy, so with a larger group it's sometimes hard to talk across the table. Last night they absolutely nailed the food, as usual and the restaurant was not too loud. We started with Harpo's Garlic Bread, the Squash Blossoms, and the Local Calamari "New Style," all excellent starters. For mains, the Tomahawk Pork Chop was juicy and well prepared, the Sausage Cavatelli was hearty and flavorful, the Chicken Parmesan was crispy, cheesy and satisfying, and the Swordfish Milanese was a really nice preparation. The Hand Cut Fries, Baby Romaine Salad, and BLT Salad rounded everything out nicely. One tip: if you know you want wine, consider bringing a good bottle. Corkage is $25 per bottle, which can make a lot of sense. Our server, Noe D., did a very nice job. I was especially impressed with our table assistant, Kevin A., friendly, attentive, and genuinely enjoyable to interact with. I also had the chance to meet Edgar on the management side, who was new to me. Thanks to the Dockside team for another great night. From the moment we walked in, the hospitality was excellent. The hostess welcomed us downstairs, another staff member greeted us when we reached the rooftop, and our server quickly followed up. Then came the surprise: complimentary champagne for both of us. It was such a thoughtful gesture, especially because those little celebratory touches seem to be increasingly rare. Our server was also patient with our questions and attentive throughout the evening without being intrusive. We spent about 2.5 hours enjoying dinner and catching up over: Baked Brie Brussels Sprouts Steak Frites Everything was flavorful, and the entire experience felt relaxed, peaceful, and worth the price point. The food was great, but the hospitality is what earned the 5 stars for me. Real hospitality is paying attention to the guest, recognizing the occasion, and making people feel genuinely welcomed. Walked out three hours later knowing a guy named Tony's divorce history, the proper way to make a cheesesteak, and why the Steelers would've won in 2004 if the refs weren't apparently involved in an international conspiracy. The décor can best be described as "Pittsburgh sports memorabilia meets San Pedro uncle's garage." There are TVs everywhere, and I'm reasonably certain changing one away from a Steelers game is legally classified as aggravated assault. The regulars immediately know you're not a regular because they've apparently been occupying the same barstools since the Clinton administration. Give it twenty minutes, though, and somebody will buy you a beer, explain which bartender you should never piss off, and introduce you to six people whose names you'll forget immediately. Then there's the food. You order a cheesesteak thinking, It's a neighborhood bar--how good could it possibly be? Annoyingly good. Now you're sitting there at 1:17 p.m. on a Wednesday eating a sandwich the size of a driveshaft, drinking your second beer and wondering how this became your afternoon.
