Service was the clear high point. For a counter-service restaurant, the welcome was exceptional, and meeting the owners added something worthwhile to the visit. The dining room, housed in a former Taco Villa, was acceptably clean, though worn flooring and wall coverings gave the space a visibly aging, retrofitted appearance. During lunch, customer traffic moved comfortably, and the atmosphere was relaxed. Value was harder to find. Even with such pleasant hospitality, the food itself left me at 2/10 for value. I would return in a pinch for a quick protein meal, and I would happily recommend stopping in to meet the owners. For barbecue, however, this visit gave me little reason to recommend the plate. I tried getting a reservation just a few hours before we arrived, but there was nothing available, and I wasn't able to get anyone on the phone. Once we drove past that evening, we understood why, the place was absolutely PACKED! I had seen that waits can sometimes reach 1-1.5 hours. That said, if you do have to wait, this is probably one of the better places to do it because there is SO much randomness to explore. Between the gift shop, Western décor, photo ops, and everything else going on, you could easily entertain yourself for an hour. We changed plans and made a reservation for 9 AM the next morning instead, and I'm actually really glad we did! On a Thursday morning it was quiet and relaxed, and we basically had our pick of all the goofy photo opportunities without fighting the dinner crowds. We shared the steak and eggs, and it was a perfect breakfast for two. The steak was seasoned perfectly and cooked really well. The entire place is exactly what you hope for from an over-the-top Texas Route 66 roadside stop: rustic, quirky, cow prints everywhere, a big gift shop, and lots to look at. We also discovered a whole crew of cats hanging around outside near the patio in the morning, which was an unexpected and entertaining bonus. One disappointment for us as Route 66 souvenir collectors: they have TWO penny press machines, but unfortunately BOTH were out of order when we visited. We were so sad! Overall, going at 9 AM turned out to be a great move. You still get the full Big Texan experience, but with way fewer people and plenty of time for pictures. The wait time wasn't a big deal because we checked into our room, got settled, and browsed the gift shop while waiting for a table. The experience was fun, for sure. It's a neat restaurant. The food, though, wasn't so great. We ordered fried mushrooms as an appetizer and they were at our table in just a few minutes. It's obvious that they had been pre-prepared and had been sitting because they were cold. They were still good, but would have been better if they were hot and fresh. I ordered a porterhouse medium-rare and my wife ordered some other steak, also medium-rare. Hers was cooked perfectly, but mine came out well-done. We didn't see our server for quite a while after the food was dropped off, and I was hungry, so I started eating it anyway. The steaks were barely seasoned at all. The strip part of the porterhouse was tolerable even if overcooked, but the tenderloin side was tasteless, tough leather. It was a shame, because it looked great on the plate until I started slicing into it. By the time our server finally came around to check on us, I'd finished half the steak. She asked how it was and I showed her the well-done steak and she apologized and said that she would add a discount. When the bill came, I saw that she had taken around $15 off the price of my steak, which was reasonable, so that resolution was fine with me. We had fun while eating there. The place was super-busy and we were sat next to a couple at a long, common table. We had some great conversation with our table mates while waiting for our food. One of them got the tomahawk ribeye and it was quite impressive. Maybe we just came at the wrong time when it was too busy. Maybe if we came at a less busy time my steak wouldn't have been overcooked. This seems to be one of those restaurants that you go to once for the total experience, but it's not where I'd want to go again to get a good, reliable steak.
