Disappointing They seem to be trying to do an elevated Mexican here that misses the mark. Portions are small , twists on the original sometimes miss the mark and the prices too high for what you get. We went here yesterday for lunch for my birthday, and while I've had good food a previous time we went there (about 5 years ago), this was not one of those times. My wife had the kale and mushroom tacos (which she loved). I had the Tortilla Soup and Quesadilla. The tortilla soup was pretty good, but the Grilled Steak Quesadilla ($21) was really small and very mediocre. I mean...really mediocre. And it came with rice and beans, but the rice was cold. Not room temperature...cold. The service was excellent, and the margarita was delicious. But I think that's my last time there, given how sort of bland and unimpressive the food was for the money. You have to pay extra for chips and salsa, too. We paid (including tip) over $90 for a lunch that we could've paid half that amount for, and for much better food. Overall great experience! The decor is really beautiful, and there isn't a bad table In the whole place. I highly recommend starting with the salsa trio or guacamole. Both are really good. The salsas are all very different, and all amazing! I loved the coco-rita, it's like a pina colada on the rocks...but better! I ordered the chicken tacos, which were delicious and spicy! I also tried a bit of everyone's dish that came in my party, and my favorite entree was the cheese quesadilla which my friend added steak to. Really really good!!! We finished off our night with the bread pudding. My only hesitation about this desert was it was kind of dry and salty?....but had great flavor and the ice cream was a great addition. My wife and I visited this past evening for a quick happy hour. We managed to skip the 50min wait by finding an open seat at the bar. The menu has numerous amounts of fun tequila cocktails (which I tried) and was very happy with them. We had extremely quick and attentive service, the restaurant is only 3 weeks old at this location so this was a pleasant surprise. The only food item I can rate is the happy hour adobo wings. I would say they were good but overly dry rubbed with the chile spice for my taste. Hence the 4 star review. Upon our next visit we will try some of the traditional Mexican style dishes. Poquitos is a nice dining experience in downtown Bothell that is just fine if you're craving Mexican food and happen to be in the immediate area. The restaurant is easy to find but parking on a Wednesday night was a nightmare. If you want free street parking, you may have to circle for a long time hoping to get lucky or park several blocks away. Paid garages are available as well but are just as inconvenient. On the inside, the restaurant was nicely decorated, medium noise, and our server was pretty good, professional and friendly. We ordered chips and salsa, as well as queso, but I was surprised that they weren't complimentary. The queso was pretty good, but I was disappointed that the salsas (you get three varieties) seemed several days old, some of them with graying color and all of them with bland, flat tastes. We didn't finish any of them and I would not recommend purchasing. Stick with the queso. For entrees, we ordered the fish tacos, chiles rellenos, and enchiladas. Presentation on all three dishes was excellent; the dishes look appetizing and colorful from the start. Taste was a slightly different story. The fish tacos were fantastic; fresh, lightly fried fish stacked with tons of veggies on delicious corn tortillas, these were a highlight of the meal. The chiles rellenos and enchiladas were decent, but maybe a little less so than average. Overall, I'd return here for the queso and fish tacos, and maybe some drinks outside in nice weather, but wouldn't go out of my way, especially with the several competing Mexican restaurants and food trucks in the area. read more

Super friendly staff, not very good food. Plus they don't know how to make a Carne Asada

I love when I see a bunch of negative reviews on a place so when I go, I can say how wrong these people were. But nope, a lot of the reviews I've read so far are spot on. I'll share mine. Nice place. Amazing lighting, though a bit too dark. WAY too loud in there, which we usually like because we have a 4 year old that is loud. But the music volume was over-the-top, making everyone talk over each other so they could hear. Just over my head, I saw 6 speakers. With previous reviews complaining on being charged for salsa, I felt going in that yeah, complimentary chips and salsa is expected at a majority of Mexican restaurants but if they're charging for it, it must be high quality and delicious. Nope. 2 of the 3 salsa's you get are pretty good, I liked the green tomatillo one the most but they're not worth charging for. No heat on it. And one of them just tasted like tomato sauce. Heard the guacamole was good too so we ordered that. But it took half our chips to find the avocado because they put a heap of cilantro and onions on top. Hope you brought some floss if you're on a date! Skip the guac. Kids meal: We ordered the quesadilla kids plate for our son. Comes with rice and beans and oranges. It comes out on a really nice plate and everything is separated. Bonus points for that as most parents know, kids don't want food touching other food. He loved the rice, the oranges and took him some time to warm up to the quesadilla due to the taste of the homemade tortillas but he eventually ate it. One word of advice for management, consider refried beans instead of black beans. Kids are real picky on texture and my son refused to eat it. If you get kids plates back consistently with black beans still there, that's a red flag. Replace with different beans or more rice. He couldn't get enough of the rice. Carne Asada: My wife and I shared the grilled corn which was BY FAR the highlight of the night. Yum! And the Carne Asada plate as well. Now, with the carne asada, if you come in here thinking you're going to have an authentic Mexican restaurant experience, you will be disappointed. I have never seen carne asada like this before. You can immeditatly tell they are trying too hard to be fancy here. First off, it was a real nice steak. It had the right flavor, but it was more of a steakhouse steak. Maybe a rib-eye? So that threw me off and on top of the steak, for some odd reason was a scoop of guacamole and onion rings? All sitting on top of a pool of red sauce. This plate it bizarre to me. Comes with 3 tiny tortillas too. Ohh kaaay. I'll try it. It was pretty tasty actually. The tortillas are legit. Steak is seasoned perfectly. But the onion rings? What in the world you guys? Why? I tried one bite of it and the onion rings took over the entire dish. It's not complimentary at all. I don't get CARNE ASADA so I can taste onion rings. I want the meat flavor and toppings that compliment the dish like chopped onion, cilantro, a nice hot sauce and maybe some Cotija cheese. It's SO simple. Why complicate a dish that's been perfected for decades? Anyway.. overall, it's a decent place. But the noise level, the long wait, the confusing dishes, and above all, the PRICE, make this a one time thing. I want to love this place based on the quality of food at their Seattle location and how close this is to my house. But unfortunately after a few attempts I may still need some convincing. Can't go wrong with their salads, consistent and full of flavor and the margaritas are great! Just slower service here and sometimes the kitchen is unable to make substitutions for meats on a salad. I also have tried making a reservation here the last two years for my birthday on cinco de Mayo, first attempt they told me they were closing that day which was odd cause they had just opened and think that would be a busy day. This last year I was told they could take a reservation then got a call back saying sorry we can't accommodate your group (8 people). Frustrating! read more

I asked him if he was okay, thinking he was under the influence of something due to how rude he was being. They then proceeded to give us our burrito cold with ingredients we asked them to remove. horrible experience. The Covid Update... Plus - much quieter, which was really my only complaint before. Minus - extremely limited menu. Basically, don't come unless you want tacos My appetizer was the Jalapeño Queso. The jalapeño queso was too thin, but really tasty. The chips did not come out hot. For the main course, I got the mixed tacos - one of each (chicken, beef, and pork). All were nicely flavored but overstuffed. I'd prefer 4-5 tacos with less stuff so I could eat them. The rice and beans were meh. Service was so- so and definitely a step down from pre-covid times. First time visiting Poquitos in Bothell. It was a rainy evening and we decided to give it a shot. I had heard about there being a charge for chips, and that did not impress me. When we arrived, the host wasn't at the booth, but gave us a warm welcome when he came around. Quite a bit of the restaurant was not being used for seating, so everyone was in one smaller area (besides the bar). The decor is well done and definitely captures a mash up of Mexican tradition and a Northwest atmosphere, while being a bit dark and glam. Great for November. The lighting was good and interesting, but I had to laugh when two of the employees bickered a bit about the settings. Perhaps a few things still to be settled? The folks bussing also loom over the dining are. Hands folded, but it's a bit odd for a casual and smaller space. The chips situation is way overstated in my opinion -if- and only if, you are a guacamole person. For $4 you can get a large bowl of chips with great guacamole and salsa. The guacamole was extremely creamy and rich, not showing any of the frustrating problems so many avocados have had this past season. The Happy Hour menu included a ton of items for $7, as well as drinks. Some of the menu was quite reasonable, too. However, the top billing items and the "better" margaritas are expensive. Over $20 for the carnitas. It was certainly a large portion, but I would have rather had half the portion for half the price, or maybe 2/3 to satisfy the appetites of some. The tortillas that came with it had a very strong grain flavor and foam texture. I wasn't a fan. My husband got the happy hour tacos and he said they were good. Definitely a smaller portion, but we had a ton of chips and I definitely had stuff to share from my huge plate. Comparing margaritas, he opted for the most expensive and I wanted to try the $7 for a comparison. Biggest visual difference was that the happy hour margarita came in a bigger glass with more ice. Flavor wise, both were good and different. However, I don't think the more expensive one tasted all that much better. Overall, I liked the decor, the flavors had a lot of nuance, but I left feeling like overall it was a bit overpriced and wishing I had had a glass of red wine like one of our table neighbors. Even my foodie 9 year old said her chicken enchiladas were "terrible". The chicken was super dry and food very bland. The kids enchiladas is legit chicken enchiladas covered with tomato sauce. Kids enchiladas can be made with mild enchilada sauce and doesn't need to have puréed tomato sauce thrown on top. Kids have palates too and don't need their food flavorless and "dumbed down". We didn't even eat our meal--we tossed it. The corn tortillas for enchiladas should be dipped in the enchilada sauce before stuffed with chicken also the chicken should have sauce too instead of just layers of corn tortillas and dry bland chicken then some sauce thrown on top. Loved the atmosphere here! The details in the decor was nothing I was used to at a typical Mexican restaurant. It is beautiful inside. I ordered the chicken tacos- which were delicious. Chicken was seasoned and juicy, crema was flavorful, and toppings were cut small enough so you get the perfect bite each time. They also have a kick to them. I really enjoyed my experience here! After reading the other reviews I was skeptical.. that is why I ordered an appetizer (because service was expected to be slow). But our main meal came out less than 5 minutes after the appetizer. I like Poquitos! It's got a nice atmosphere. The service is always pretty good. The food is... fine. There's a few stand out things like the shrimp ceviche (it is delicious and fresh and well balanced, definitely my favorite thing there). The nachos, also quite tasty. The off-the-cob elotes were pretty good, flavorful and well seasoned. I might wish for a corn on the cob but I understand why it isn't. Often the things with more meat are not so well balanced. They go heavy on the citrus- which I am into!- but citrus tends to be the only note. I rarely think "wow this needed more salt" but most of Poquito's foods could desperately use some more salt. Or MSG or really anything- like even just a dang pollo caldo or tomate bouillon cube thrown in while cooking! More cotija cheese would do it, too. The rice and beans are not great. Old dry rice and woefully unseasoned black beans. Tortillas were fresh and tasty. Even the misses on their food are so close! My partner and I spend plenty of time at Poquitos brunch and enjoy the food and service. Recently we decided to serve poquitos at a party of ours. After communicating with the catering team at Poquitos, they recommended ordering a few family taco packs instead of full-on catering since it was more economical. I was able to place my order the day of online as well as confirm via phone with the friendly staff. I showed up 5 minutes earlier than the set time to pick up and the food was just being wrapped up. Not only was the staff incredible friendly and thorough, but they went the extra mile and carried the bulk of food out to my car. As always the food was amazing and well-packaged. You can trust Poquitos to take care of you when you already face the stress of hosting large gatherings. You can also trust them to prioritize the customer. My husband had the shrimp negresa and the salsa had good Smokiness to it but we were warned it would be spicy...severely lacking in that department honestly. We expected some kick and got none. His rice and beans was pretty small for the total cost of the meal. Nothing special about those honestly. The chips and salsa three ways for $5.50 was overpriced. I have had good and mediocre meals here (but the last few have been pretty good). Our servers have always been super friendly and attentive. Ambiance is nice and fun. The chopped salad is my go to order and my husband usually orders the alambres. Chopped salad is a large portion and consistent. We stopped in for brunch recently and tried the huevos rancheros and it had a nice presentation, decent portion size, but lacked flavor. Wouldn't order that again but my chopped salad was good as usual. I do suggest ordering another side of dressing for the chopped salad as it is lightly dressed. We really enjoyed their enchiladas Rojas on cinco de mayo. Beautiful ambience. It looks like a lovely outdoor courtyard though it's indoors. High ceilings. Just a lovely atmosphere compared to your typical Mexican restaurant. The food presentation was lovely too. I normally don't eat the beans because they are just a mushy puddle, but here they are served in a small black cauldron of a dish and very tasty black beans. I really wanted to like this place. I REALLY DID! We gave it a try last night for my friend's birthday. Overall I can tell you in very certain terms - we won't be back. The good: - Chips / Salsa - Guacamole - Habanero sauce All three are actually quite good. It's a shame they charge so much for them. Traditional Mexican restaurants will provide the chips and salsa for free, which actually encourages people to drink more (salty snacks do that). As for my wife and I, she got the Chicken Tinga tacos. She was not a fan. Bland. STORE BOUGHT shredded cheese. Not even a Mexican cheese. She also got one of the agua frescas - $4.00 for literally about 5 ounces of her drink. She said it was ok, but would never have ordered it had she known it would be a tiny beverage. Most Mexican restaurants will fill a tall glass and charge less than $3.00 for it. I got the alambres which didn't taste bad, it was just a hot mess of overcooked meat and bell pepper topped with literally 1 tablespoon of white cheese (unclear what kind) and drowning in some liquid. Google Alambres recipes and you'll see ample bell pepper and cheese, as well as avocado and lime. My dish was advertised as "seared Wagyu" - which instead was overcooked and lifeless Wagyu. It also advertises cilantro and avocado-tomatillo salsa which would imply something green. My dish was a dark brown with zero color. To top it off, when I ordered it, the server asked flour or corn tortillas, I asked which was made in-house, she said neither. So I went with corn. And when my dish arrived, I received three total for a rather large dish. Also, I had asked for horchata. Again, not knowing it would be a tiny glass, but somehow I got the last of it. A vein of kindness that the server brought me the end of the horchata, but it was literally 2 sips - ironically it ended up on the bill for the $4.00 charge, which I had to ask to take off the bill. Now for our server... did not come back for a solid 10 minutes after our dishes arrived to ask if anyone needed anything. Since my dish was so one-note flavor / texture, I asked for some cabbage to give me some contrast. To her credit she brought back the cabbage and some tortilla strips at no extra cost, but unfortunately it was several minutes and my dish was now cold. On top of that, I was on my last tortilla so this accompaniments were good inside of one tortilla. The rest of the service was not great. Server was a bit snarky. The floor manager came by and asked if everything was ok - our friends didn't have anything for him, but did remark after that the tacos they got (mixed taco plate) was pretty subpar. Dessert was actually quite good. Cheesecake flan (which is not authentic Mexican) and a coffee dessert (not sure what it was, but it was also tasty). Which brings me to my last point: Right on the website it talks about how authentic this food is. I can tell you it's NOT authentic. Yes, it's better than Azteca, but not better than most Mexican restaurants. Maybe I'm being overly critical but based on other reviews, I don't think I am. My suggestions for the restaurant: Guys, it was dead on a Monday at 6:00-7:30 PM. People should be here enjoying authentic meals. You really need to hire a Mexican cuisine chef to tweak your ingredients and food preparation if you want to be called "real Mexican food". People come back to restaurants that have good food. Your restaurant is beautiful but when the food is bad it doesn't matter. Some of the best food I ever ate was in ugly restaurants. Some of the worst I have had is in beautiful places. Yours is true of the latter. I suspect food costs for our dinner was about $3.00 in total. The bill (before our Passport card) would have been $75. That is not reciprocal value. For $75 for two people to eat in a restaurant there better be great service and high quality food. What we had yesterday just wasn't up to par. We won't be back until we see reviews improve. Save yourself some time and don't go. When you feel if might want to take a chance, stop by at Happy Hour - they do seem to have a good lineup for that.
