We went to Pop's on a Friday afternoon & it was not busy at all so take that into consideration. One waitress, Kirsten. She was a sweetheart & kind to all patrons. She definitely knows the locals, which is always nice. The restaurant was very clean and had ample seating. We received our drinks and food quickly. I had a half rack of ribs, fried okra, potato salad, and coconut cream pie for dessert. My ribs were very tender and did fall off the bone easily. I thought they had great flavor, not being too smoky. I used a light amount of sauce. The okra was great. Potato salad so so but I'm not a huge fan of mustard based potato salad. The homemade bread was very fresh and a nice little touch. Coconut cream pie...oh my goodness! Yum! My husband had a pork steak and some wings, which were both tender and delicious. Online menu (from several third party sites) said the double hamburger basket was $7.99 or $8.99, depending on which one you looked at.... got there and it was $15.99. THESE PLACES NEED TO HAVE A WEBSITE. No, a Facebook page is just that, A PAGE, it is not their page or their website. Get a real website, they are freaking CHEAP... and keep an updated menu on your website... and that means with prices - it isn't a menu if it doesn't have the prices. Anyway, one price that did match was the full rack of ribs with 2 sides for $19.99. I got that... what a horrible mistake that was. They were trying to push the mac & cheese and something else; I don't like mac & cheese and I'm not a 5 year old kid. Anyway, I got fries and baked beans.... they were crinkle cut fries but they weren't crispy at all; they were half-cooked & mushy. The baked beans were some really bland beans that were probably dumped out of a can of a generic brand. The ribs were undercooked and the sauce was pretty bad... it LOOKED GOOD but it tasted like they just added a couple of things to some ketchup. Some bites just tasted like ketchup. And then the ticket.... oh, you get up to the counter and THEN you learn they charge nearly 4% if you use a credit card... maybe it did say that on the menu, but I couldn't read the menu... the restaurant lighting was a little dim and the menu text was blurry (I have 20/20 vision), so I don't know if the menu stated that fee or not. And then the "suggested" tip amounts. I find those things to be incredibly insulting... we can do math. However, I checked their precalculated tip amounts and they are tipping on the tax too. That's not how it is done. The tip is calculated on the subtotal of the food, not the tax. That's the way everyone does it, that's the way everyone knows to do it. That's what is expected. I did pay cash and they refused to give me a copy of the receipt. I asked for it but the cashier said she needed it for their records. Their records? What about my records? Anyway... lots of bad things here... I will NEVER be back. Oh, it was very crowded with tiny tables; those things alone are reason enough to never return. read more

Pretty good overall. The BBQ sauce and fried goodies helped get this to 4 stars. Some of the items just maybe aren't for me. Without the sauce the Turkey is pretty dry and the slaw is a vinegar base which just isn't my jam but it may be yours. Pops is def worth a try if you're in the area and in the mood for some local BBQ. Also love that they have a drive thru for pick up which makes it super convenient. read more

I'm sorry but this place looks better on the outside. I was not impressed with the interior or the food. I could have made better food at home and saved my money. The waitresses were not attentive did not check on me once. Soda tasted awful and the French fries were as hard as a rock I'm glad I didn't break a tooth. I would not recommend this place and I surely will not be going back there. read more

Worst experience in a long time. Pretty poor service but the food was the low point. The "BBQ" pork was sliced pork roast. The "BBQ sauce" is pictured. The food was almost tasteless and chewy, and the barbecue sauce tasted like pure ketchup.

My husband and I stopped by Pop's BBQ when we were driving along I-57 S. It seems as though this area along I-57 has probably about at least 1 BBQ places at exits for a good 10 miles. To get to Pop's you drive a bit away from I-57 and hit downtown Benton. Pop's seems to be an everyday joint for family and locals to visit. The menu was filled with comfort food. I ordered the pork basket and my husband ordered the roast chicken basket. I loved the pork because I've never had pork sliced so thin. Most BBQ places that you go to in Chicago drench the pork in BBQ sauce. Pop's just drizzles the BBQ sauce on top, so that when you taste the pork alone, there's so much flavor. You don't need all that sauce. It was nice because the edge of this thinly sliced pork had so much crunch and crisp to it. My husbands chicken was so tender. The meat fell off the bone. Their sides were yummy. I loved their cole slaw, because the dressing was clear with just the vinegar. Most cole slaws I've seen are that milky color. Other yummy sides included green beans, mac & cheese and your usuals. The only comment that I have in terms of what could have been better was the bun that my pork was on. Stopped in just from seeing the signs when we were traveling through the area. They claim to be a BBQ restaurant but they were advertising Fish on the sign. That was weird, but we were already parked when we noticed it. And then we walked in side... the rancid stench of raw, or rotten, fish was overwhelming. It, literally, gagged us. We left without even time to look over the menu. And we were ruined for lunch. We drove for a few more hours before we felt like thinking of eating again - the stench in this place was really that bad... The locals who were dining here must have lost their sense of smell. The sandwiches are great. If you are expecting a super saucey barbecue sandwich, you are in the wrong part of the country. The flavor is great and I have no complaints. The sides are copious. The staff is attentive and always ready to ask you "You want some more drink?". I would not hesitate to go back the next time I am in Benton. read more

Southern Illinois BBQ is about thinly sliced (not shredded) smoked pork, sauce on the side. Wrapped in serving paper with a side of vinegary coleslaw the sandwich we got at Pop's is a winner. They offered two sauces--a molasses-based sweet, and an unusual white sauce that the server said was hot. It had a tangy zing, but was not hot. We saw the French fries someone had ordered and took a pass. My husband ordered a 1/2 slab of ribs-- a bargain at $7.50. A whole lotta meat in that half slab. At that price they weren't baby-backs, but spare ribs--a good quality spare rib. A smoky dry rub made them tasty, but extra time to tenderize in the smoker was needed. Get a side of the home made bread--well worth the extra carbs. Service was mediocre--we had to ask for sauce twice, we had to ask for bread twice. read more
