Whoa my last review for this place was 18 years ago, whaaaa?!! There are humans that were born then graduated high school since then, wtf is goin' on here. Lol. I do like coming here about 1-2 times per year but this past year, they did a pretty major renovation on the course design. I think they even closed the place down for almost a year. My childhood buddy who's also an avid golfer, lives in this town. He invited a few of us to check out the new layout this summer 2025, so figured an update could be of pertinence. This is a Northern California Golf Association course, so there is some weight involved in the operations. This is more for serious golfers, not beginners or monthly weekend hackers out to drink. There are courses for those peeps, so pick accordingly. The one thing that'll weed out most non-serious golfers here is their price. It was $160 or so to play here on a weekend morning. It is not cheap and will infuriate you if you suck. Lol. And that price only includes your green fee and a cart to ride in. No practice balls, no packed lunch/drink, all those are extra cha-ching. You can save a little by being a NCGA member and also if you choose to walk the course. If you go those routes your round may get whittled down $110-$120. I actually found the newer design to be much more friendly/fair. Like less penalizing as it was before. Which makes it more fun to play. And you can make it harder by playing further tees if it is starting to seem too easy. The outside rough isn't fully grown yet also, so maybe that had something to do with it being currently easier. We were able to find our balls in the rough most times we looked. Their grass is super plush from fairways to greens. I was even able to putt many of my chips around the greens as it all just seemed like carpet textured grass. And that helped my score that day as it just seemed easier to get next to the hole. They actually put yardage markers on most sprinklers around the course. Most places are doing away with this since most people are using technology to find their yardage. I still like this old school method as I don't have to carry anything or push buttons to look for info. But that's my old school ass. We didn't eat/drink that day here as we had reservations for a brunch outing afterwards. But a cart person drove around for service and the main building is still the same Spanish looking villa where you can wine and dine in more bougie settings. Course is now too expensive for me to be a regular, but 3-4 times per year is totally doable. I'm not an avid golfer either, but I do go out probably more than the average casual golfer. Poppy Ridge you did good on your improvements. Now I'll do good by including you in my rotation and by bringing others who have not experienced your new offerings. *golf claps*

A good place for lunch or dinner even if you're not playing golf. Nice outdoor patio overlooking the golf course and the vineyard. I see golfers, friends, a business meeting taking place here. Pretty casual but more quiet setting thanks to the spacious dining area. My club sandwich was huge and very tasty. Good service but need to be patient when it is busy with golfers coming in and out.

This is for the grill. Poppy Ridge reopened in May 2025 after a remodel, so we thought we would revisit. Our first and only visit was in 2018, and it wasn't good. I'm REALLY glad we decided to give the grill another chance. The stunning views, peaceful setting, and great accessibility for elderly patrons still exists. The notable improvement for us came in the food. It was 100x better than before. Everything we got was delicious with many more appetizing choices on the menu that we will certainly come back to try.

I'm not a golfer but love riding my bike to Poppy Ridge because of the hill climb. The club house restaurant is a popular destination for cyclists after their ride. It's nice to sit outside and enjoy the view of the golf course and surrounding hills.

I really enjoyed my round! I loved the grass range, the green, and pace of play! I finished 18 holes in about 4 1/2 hours. It was also reassuring to see a Marshall out on the course. Please keep doing what you're doing Poppy Ridge. This will be my new go to spot!

I really loved the course, it was in amazing condition, and we were honored to be able to play it on the first day, the service was awesome, and we got to meet the architect! The only issues that I had were that there weren't enough water stations and we were literally thirsty like in a desert by the 16th hole... We also had issues with the flags and being able to differentiate whether it was a back pin, middle pin, or front pin. Otherwise, it was simply awesome.

Able to accommodate a large party. We were able to decorate the table

It is beautifully maintained and a unique gorgeous geography to the course. The pro shop and golf shop are very nice. Everything is very well-maintained. The only hesitation I have in giving it an additional star was the service level. When I got to the bag drop off, there were two young men talking. I opened my trunk and they never looked up and I asked if they could get my bag and then they look kind of surprised and one of them helped me. I ran into another woman that was playing in our group and she said they did the same thing to her. She ended up taking her bag out and putting it on the cart and they never attempted to help her. Also, when we started playing there was a food drink cart girl out on the course. When we got to the cart, she was eating and getting her water ready and never asked us if we wanted anything. After we finished playing on the Green, she was still there eating her breakfast and getting a her special drink together. Never asked if we wanted anything. Over three hours later, we ran into her and told her that we wish you had come earlier cause some of us were hungry I had to share a sandwich that I brought. She said it was a good thing. I brought the sandwich because all she had was snacks. For some reason, we were also put behind a fivesome and we were three threesomes when he asked the Marshall about that he said don't they let men go out as fivesome at our course? Interest though you these men were worse slower golfers than any of the ladies in our groups, it was very slow. Even with these issues, it was a wonderful day a beautiful course and I would go play again

But don't think they are affliliated as the signages seems pretty separate. Balls dispensed through a machine that can take cards. Slightly better value than in my area, where I can get about 10 extra balls for the same price of $11 for a medium bucket. My area gives me 50 balls, here I got 60. They have both grass and mats here, which caught me by surprise as I haven't seen a grass range in over 10 years. They are just much more maintenance for a place to have, and my area for sure no longer have them. So I applaud them for having them here. But on an early weekend morning, that grass area was completely full, with people in line even for the stalls. There were only 10-12 stalls, so I'm pretty sure that the demand exceeds the space. The matted area was another 30-40 yards away. You're hitting into an open field facing the freeway. There are many palm trees out there so I did find targets to go for. Except there's no yardage postings, so I was going by feel. The whole point in going to a driving range is so you can work on your yardages, so I dock and reward ranges that may or may not give you this benefit. There's a small chipping area that also gets occupied readily. I may have to check this place out on a weekday mid-day sometime. The putting green was just okay, decent to work out some basics, but nothing like a course you'd play on. I had a decent practice session here, except in the summer morning I went, the matted area was very wet, probably they hose it down to clean it, which is fine. But my matt was pretty saturated so not sure on how it affected my contacts. Also when I left and got home, and because I was wearing shorts, I had several insect bites around my ankles and calf areas, on both legs. I'm assuming mosquitos because everything was so moist and wet, but left me itching and scratching for several days to follow. I hardly ever get bites even during camping, so to get them from a driving range, makes me weary on returning.

But in my first 5-7 years on taking up the game (95'-02'ish), we played here often, as this is a great course to learn on for several reasons. 1) It is only 9 holes, so you don't have to commit to a long 5-hour round on a big course. And when one is a beginner, 18 holes can be grueling. 2) The course is wide open, lots of room to err, without much penalty areas. Now there are areas you have to watch out for, but still much more generous than most other courses. 3) Lots of other not-so-good golfers here. So even if you suck, you won't really be holding up snooty better golfers, who will often press your pace. So be prepared for a slower round here, can't be in hurry here. 4) Cheaper green fees. Currently in 2026 it was $20 to walk on a weekday morning. Not sure what it is on weekends. It doesn't get any cheaper to play, especially out here in the Bay Area. Now for better players, this is still not a bad place to practice and hone your short game. I took my regular Monday crew here, as 1 of them had never been, and the other golf mate hadn't been in a long time, just like me. And we had a great time. For a 9 holer, there are 3 short par 4s. The rest are par 3s and they are really not that easy. Some of them are longer like 170+ yards, and almost all the greens are bowled/raised so it looks like a turtles hump. So a little tougher on getting your ball to stick to your target. You'll be doing a lot of chipping and pitching, which is all great practice for your short game. This course is in the middle of horse racetrack, at the Alameda Co. Fairgrounds. Great way to make use of otherwise dead space. Now when the fair is going on during the summer, I'm sure this course will close down. But the rest of the year, it is open. There is also a driving range/practice facility. But haven't used those yet. Locals seem to use it. And since it is inside the racetrack, in order to get inside, you'll have to drive under a one way tunnel. Which used to be scary back in the day, as you had to honk to warn the other direction that you were going through. Now there is a traffic light that directs traffic, which eliminates guessing and having to back up inside a tunnel. A nice course that has stood the test of time and is still serving a very specific purpose...to teach and prep newer golfers by providing a relaxed and beginner friendly environment. To that I gotta give props.

When I politely pushed for a slightly more specific estimate so I could manage my schedule, he gave me major attitude--dramatically looking at his watch and condescendingly snapping, "I don't know, maybe noon." To be clear: this isn't about the turnaround time. It is entirely about the dismissive attitude and the disrespectful way it was conveyed. When an employee treats you with that level of contempt, it completely destroys your confidence in their work and your value to the store as a customer. On my way out, I spoke to the manager and told him that because of this negative interaction, I couldn't trust that the technician would do a good job on my clubs and would be taking my business elsewhere.
