We were…read moregoing to pass right by Howard on our travels from Salina to Bella Vista, AR, so we planned a lunch stop. I'm glad we did. Howard is one of those Kansas towns that has seen better days. It's pretty dumpy. Toots is pretty dumpy too. It's just a squatty old building on a gravel lot with faded signs and a pretty neglected look to it. Inside there are tables to seat fifteen or so and a small counter with a cash register. Behind the cash register, the young woman didn't give much of a greeting and acted as if I should just know what I wanted. Well, I kind of did, but I still wanted to look at the menu on the wall. I ordered the pork tender sandwich and the big cheeseburger with onion rings and sweet potato fries to go--we had our dog with us and planned to eat at a picnic table around to the side. I asked if they could cut the sandwiches in half so my wife and I could share, but they didn't. Had to go back for a knife which was just and ancient table knife and had to promise to bring it back. The food was good but the flies outside were super-annoying so we didn't enjoy it as much as I hoped. Anyway, Toots was pretty much what I expected, a greasy little drive-in with classic greasy drive-in food. Pretty darn good.

We ate Thursday evening at Smokey D's BBQ on Main St. in Chanute. Our waitress was helpful, cordial and attentive; and our food was on the table quickly. My husband and I both had the Thursday special: A burger covered with brisket, topped with cheese, then topped with either coleslaw or baked beans. Potato salad for the side. The brisket was delicious and tender, and the hamburger was very flavorful. Add a slathering of BBQ sauce, and you know this is worth a second trip to SE Kansas. I enjoyed the classic potato salad, but I do like how my husband makes it with a little Worcesterchire Sauce to kick it up a notch. We talked with the owner, Mark Davidson, and his wife. We also sampled the sweet and spicy BBQ sauce. We really need some of that when you get it in a bottle! We must come back to try other menu items. We didn't have much hope of finding a restaurant still open after 8:30 in a small, rural town and worried we'd have to drive far out of our way to find something to eat, but we spied this charming bar glowing across the street. What an oasis! We walked in to find a cool watering hole with a safari theme, complete with real taxidermied African animals on the wall and creative lighting that was fun, inviting and surprisingly chic. Our waitress was helpful and nice and had great drink and food suggestions. The fare was quite good and again, more than we expected. We were impressed they graciously marked vegetarian items as such in their menu which was much appreciated by the vegetarian in our troupe. We also LOVED their version of a Long Island Iced Tea, which we highly recommend if you're ever there. It was a great place to unwind and debrief from our event and being late on a weeknight, we pretty much had the place to ourselves, so it was the perfect ending to our time in Sedan.
