Honestly not sure how they classify as a golf course. Most of the greens have large dirt patches and craters. One "green" is a flag in the fairway. Several fairways don't have grass or are overgrown. And the bunkers have no rakes. A place to take your kid who is learning to golf. But that's a reach. read more

We unfortunately played 9 holes at Ponkapoag GC in Canton. Not being from the area and passing through, before anyone, says "you should've known better", it was a last minute opportunity to play and we figured why not. It was the WORST decision and still feel we were taken advantage of and should have known better with the fact that there was a "No Refunds" sign on the front desk! The photo below is the same for all of the greens on the course (we didn't even bother putting after the first 3 holes)! I WILL NEVER PLAY THIS COURSE AGAIN! Visited Ponkapoag Golf Course 3 different times and had 3 different experiences each time. It is a very afforable spot to golf - for the price $12 - 9 hole twilight hours, it is unbeatable. It cost more at some driving ranges for a bucket of balls. However, you pay for what you get is the theme here. The greens are laughable as my carpet at home rolls better than their greens. Ponkapoag is massive and has 2 courses to choose from. Played Course 1 Front 9 after work and it was a nice walk around the course after a long day sitting at a desk. Managed by DCR, I do see a lot of people walking the trails here with their dogs and jogging. Push carts are rentable for $5. Rented a cart during another time for Course 1 Front 9 and it was fun quick and easy. There's no ranger that manages people's pace of play but again that is the price you pay for. Do not play Course 2 Back 9. The bugs are unbearable. If you want the bugs to keep buzzing in your ears and around your face, this is the spot for you. It was worst than camping. There's no maintenance around the back of the course. I couldn't find my ball after driving it onto the fairway as the grass was too tall. I couldn't stand the bugs and I forced my partner to leave after 4 holes. read more

This course is embarrassing. It's one thing to play in subpar (no pun intended) conditions at a public municipal course, and I and many others can look past that. But this course doesn't even have bad conditions, it's just a dumpster fire and borderline unplayable. The greens are ripped up, shredded and destroyed with sand and plenty of uncut patches of grass. The pace of play is also laughable, as it is clear as day that plenty of people are sneaking on and playing for much more than they paid, ruining the pace of play. $27 is laughable for 18 holes, as I'm not sure I would even play here for free if given the chance. Besides the fact that there are 18 holes and pins, you would not think there is a golf course on that piece of property. I hope the state reflects on the price and conditions of this establishment and makes a change because it is unfair to customers and golfers to pay any amount of money to play here. read more

The greens are unplayable. Tall grass and giant sand filled divots. The fairways are almost better. It doesn't look like they have done anything to help the grass in decades. It's been 4 years since I played Course 2 and I was hoping that maybe the State had spent a couple dollars to make this course playable. I want to start with some positives. There is now an outline to where the fairway ends and the rough begins. Bunkers can use some work but I did see that they are filling some in with fresh sand. Fairway bunkers are a disaster where grass and weeds have overtaken them. Green side bunkers are getting better. That is a work in progress. Please sharpen the lawnmower blades. If you are going to spend the time cutting the grass and weeds at least have sharp blades and create an even Surface. You can tell they cut the grass but the blades were dull so some grass was different lengths than others. Our weather has been perfect for grass growing. Lots of rain and some cooler temps. The weeds have overtaken the course because it lacked water for so many years and the grass died. Hello weeds. The greens are horrible. Baked out and in some cases just sand and dirt like on hole 12. There is no excuse for that. #2 is a short course to start with but for some reason no back tees or tee boxes to play from. Everything is based on the white tees at maybe 5700 yards. That yardage does not attract serious golfers. Maybe someday the DCR will give Ponkapoag the resources to make it beautiful and a show piece like it should be. read more

This place is absolutely garbage. Only $19, but soon learned that was overpriced. No signage to holes, some tee boxes don't have whites, some only have blues, it's a complete mess. The course has good bones/layout, but the maintenance is absolutely abysmal. Never seen anything like this. One of the workers was just driving his cart around the course aimlessly while we were putting on dirt. Water the greens. It felt like I was working to complete a job rather than having a good time playing a round of golf. This course is a horrible representation of Norfolk County. What a waste of land. read more

Today, I went to Ponkapoag to practice, there is a good size putting green and chipping area. The putting green is in very poor condition and is used only as a landing area. This is a state owned facility on a beautiful site, but it is neglected. It is unfortunate because it could be so much more. read more

Price is right. Course is pretty beat up but can't argue with $30 for 18 on the weekend. If they invested in sprinklers and fixed the greens course #2 would be a gem. I golfed in the Dever / Charbo tournament on Friday, it rained at the end of the day and I accidentally left my bose speaker in my cart. I spoke to the club house gentleman by phone and he said he would call me back he never did. I went up there on Saturday and looked around and spoke to a kid who said they found a speaker but it wasn't mine. There is a reasonably expectation that the speaker should have been turned into lost and found but I guess I was wrong. I spoke to a manger who was very helpful & said he would ask around and check the carts but I have not heard back from him yet. I have golfed in this tournament for years up there and I probably won't go back. To the person up there who kept my speaker I hope u enjoy it and every time u use I hope u remember u stole it and your a thief. read more

I played here today - July 9, 2016. I used to play ponky all the time when I was younger. It was always a little rough around the edges, but had great greens and was admin cheap round. I heard they opened up a new 18 so I decided to give it a try. I could not get out on the new course (course 2). So I played course 1, which I have played dozens of times in the past. Let me say this, course 1 is now garbage. Please take my word for it. It is not worth your time or the $30 it costs to walk it. There is literally no grass in most of the fairway. It is dirt and weeds. Where there is grass it is not cut, patchy, and burnt out. The tee boxes are just dirt. It is compact dirt. So much so you literally cannot get a tee in the ground. I could go on and on, but I took a photo of the 150 yard maker in the middle of 17 fairway. This is the best part of the course as far as I could tell and it still looked god awful. Course 2 may be better but please save your money and don't play course 1. Maybe if we all stop playing it the state will be forced to fix it up. read more

This is an unspeakably bad course. How on earth someone could let a Donald Ross design fall into such utter disrepair is absolutely beyond comprehension. I cannot stress this enough - DO NOT PLAY HERE. We teed off on a Saturday morning, fully expecting to be held up by the obvious crowd of people that would want to play at a DR course. However, we found no crowds! Delighted, we teed off and started down hole #1 - by halfway through the third hole we were starting to see exactly why no one had bothered to set up tee times at Ponkapoag. I'll address each horrible part of the course one at a time. Fairways: The fairways were in terrible, terrible condition. Apart from hole #1, which was in a decent enough shape, we were finding finding our balls in pothole sized holes in the ground - in the middle of the fairway! There were barely a few patches of green here and there - mostly, we found ourselves hitting out of dirt, dead, dry grass, and if you can believe it, on a couple of occasions, out of sand filled holes in the ground the size of manholes - not fairway bunkers, for those that might be confused, but actual holes that had been filled with sand and dirt! Other than that, there was plenty of crabgrass, weeds...you name it. Even a couple of fairways with large portions under swampy water that hadn't drained. Greens: To call the greens at Ponkapoag "greens" would be like calling a dirt road the I-95. Perhaps four out of the nine holes we suffered through had greens that were fully covered with grass - not manicured or even mowed, but at least they were covered. The rest were just splotches of grass interspersed with large patches of sandy dirt, clumps of crabgrass, pebbles...basically It looked like someone had decided to stick a flag and dig a hole on some barren, half mowed piece of turf. Absolutely unusable. Signage: Distance markers? You were fortunate if you found one. On one hole, the 100 yard marker was a *traffic cone*. It was only having a laser rangefinder that saved us from completely guessing what club to use on each hole. Oh, and Hole Signage? Nope. After the sixth hole it's a crapshoot which way to turn - no signs, no cart path markers, nada. All in all - an awful experience. I don't believe that Ponkapoag should be called a golf course unless you're using the term in the loosest sense possible. DO NOT PLAY HERE. read more

Course 1 is pretty good but they don't seem to be taking good care of it. Course 2 is a mess and they tend to send more people out on course 2. Like if you don't have a tee time or are a single or pair. Should be a lot cheaper to play course 2. If you have time to make a tee time, you might as well play somewhere else. The good: $19 for 9 holes on a Friday, I had the course practically to myself. The course has a great design to it, scenic area, backed up against woods/wetlands. The bad: I understand why people complain about the condition of the tees and greens. Grass in the tee boxes is sparse, tees were closed and they have you drive from a few yards in front of the tee box. Greens are sandy and bumpy. Not enough grass on them. I've worked on a few courses and these should probably be taken out and have fresh sod put down, but this is a STATE RUN COURSE. Overall, you get what you pay for. Deal with it or drive 10 minutes up the road, and enjoy the pristine conditions of Granite Links for $70 a round. read more

I would love to give Ponkapoag a 5 star review. Both courses have a great layout. I grew up playing the course back in the late 60's and early 70's. If you were under 16 years old you had an all day green fee for $2. Those were the days your tee time was the first to put your ball in a long ball rack. That was my day care when there was no day care. All I ask to the Commonwealth of Massachusetts. Please please raise your prices. The greens are not greens. I might as well putt on a dirt drive way. Fill up most of traps with sand. How much does it take to have a tee box that you can put your golf tee into the turf. My wife and I played the other day 9 holes for $12 each. I be willing to pay $30 each for 9 holes each with great conditions. Now with that being said I will keep playing Ponky. The people are real friendly. Easy to get on. Great place to practice your game. It's nice to see people walking their dogs along the bike paths. Please. RAISE YOUR PRICE FOR BETTER CONDITIONS. read more

Course is never in terrific shape but it's an affordable round and I like the layout of both #1 and #2. Place seems to be run by your typical, crotchety E. Mass folk that freeze in the presence of variability however the women that work the bar/concessions are very nice. Suitable for the price that you can choose 18 holes for a round of golf out of 36 holes. The greens and the conditions of the fairways can be tricky and rough, but if you just want to go out to practice your swing and challenge yourself with putting you have come to the right place also the course has free putting and shipping areas too that is a plus point for me also a large bucket of balls at $7 for the driving range. She is the grandmother we always come back to visit. I first played here when I was about 9 years old. CYO tournies, N E Juniors, lots of rounds and memories. Ponky helped shape my golf and my upbringing. Think of a painting hanging on the wall, Some people see just a canvas strewn with paint. i like ponky. i like it a lot. our little ponky is a public course, so it's not in the pristine condition you would expect to find at a private club. then again, you're not paying $30,000.00 (or more) to join the club, then $5,000.00 (or more) in annual dues. nope. you're paying $30 for 18 on the weekends (less after 3:00 p.m.), another $20 for a cart, and there's nothing wrong with that. this past year we primarily played course 2 which is fairly open, but has enough hazards, dog legs and changes in elevation to make it challenging. there were some holes that needed work - there is a really swampy area between the green on 2 and the tee box for 3 and the tee box on 5 was so swamped by end of season they had to move the boxes up about 100 yards - but otherwise it's in decent shape. towards the end of the season, they tended to let the leaves accumulate off the greens and in the sand traps which resulted in more than a few lost balls. then again, i suppose if i hadn't hit the balls off the greens or into the sand traps, i wouldn't have lost them. the driving range is about the cheapest around at $7 for a large bucket. the pro shop is small, but the staff is friendly and knowledgeable about the course. there's a little window in the clubhouse for drinks, snacks and beers. as beginners, we would typically ask the starters where they thought we should go based on crowds and whatnot and they were always good about leaving room behind us. lots of room. overall, if you're used to the country club lifestyle, you'd probably give this place a 2. if you like getting a good day of golf in at an excellent value, you'll enjoy yourself here. ponkapoag is near the canton/milton border about a mile off of exit 2a on 93, so it's easy to get to from boston and most places south. if you're so inclined, there's a little deli across the street that sells beers and whatnot. read more

Just got back from this little gem. Wow! For 12 bucks after 4 pm, just wow. The greens were in unreal shape. The course itself wasn't evenly green, but in most spots was fine considering how hot it's been in the last month. The tee boxes were a little rough on some holes, but what bang for your buck. Only real complaint I have is the lack of signage directing you to the next hole. When you have two courses and they overlap, one would think this would be a no brainer. We found ourselves walking from the first tee to the fifth of the second course because they were one right after the other, but somehow the second tee is across the wallking path and about 60 yards away. Hmmm? Make any sense? No. Give me an arrow at least! Loved this course, the people were friendly and the course was a sweet value. Pretty empty for a nice evening after work. Will be back again, go there and reward a muni course that actually takes pride in itself! read more

Before I start my review, let's first put this into some perspective: I am an 11 Handicap golfer who plays at least a dozen times a year. This review is in regards to Course #2 as I have not played #1 since it is mostly members and juniors who play that course. ... ... ... This course is atrocious. By far the worst golf course I have ever had the misfortune of playing. It's relatively cheap in regards to 18 holes with a cart ($45 - $55, weekday/weekend), but that is by no means any reason to keep this course so low maintenance that playing in concrete would be better. And yet some fairways are like the concrete parking lot. Bunkers have grass growing out of them, there is no difference between the rough and fairways, and don't get me started on the tee boxes. I'm amazed they actually cut the greens here! It's a fairly wide open course that isn't that challenging apart from 3 holes. First hole you have a tree in the path of your tee shot so you are forced to layup or hit big left to right shot. Greens are firm, but not horrendous in the amount of dead grass spots. Who is to blame for this? The state of Massachusetts as this course is a state owned and run establishment, so you can't get mad at the crew since they most likely don't have the funds to maintain two courses, which is a shame. Course #1 looks respectable, but tee times harder to come by because of members. If you come to Ponkapoag, just hit the range. Relatively cheap prices for large ($10, 90 balls) medium ($7, 60 balls) and small ($3, 25 balls) buckets. The Shed eatery inside is new and they now have a cart going around on weekends which is nice now. Honestly, this review is only 1/2 a star. If you suck, play here. If your like me and you have an extra $45 lying around, get a steak dinner. You'll be glad you did. read more

Honestly I don't know what these other reviewers are talking about, this is the worst course I have ever played. The only respectable part of the course are the greens, they are well kept and very even. The only downside to the greens are that they are a bit slow. Also the price is extremely cheap, but after playing it I wouldn't spend 27 bucks for 18 here again. The fairways are not existent. All there is are patches of uneven grass with massive areas of rock hard dead flattened grass. I honestly never even saw a single fairway. The tee boxers were hit or miss, several were just all dirt and the others had patches of good grass with more patches of rock hard dirt. I was honestly in shock that so many people were playing suck a terribly kept course. I recall my drive frequently landing in the area where the fairway would be only to be engulfed with a could of smoke after it landed. The bunkers were decent except for a few of them which were overtaken by grass. The layout of the course is decent and it has some impressive holes if the owners took any pride whatsoever in keeping this place up. The people playing here were extremely rude. My partner and I were stuck behind a slow group of 4 and when we asked to play through they stated, "In 4 years I have never let anyone play through. At Ponkapoag there is not etiquette." We played through anyhow. I honestly would recommend everyone to avoid this course. It is honestly the worst kept course I have ever played. read more

What a waste! I stop here on the way home from work to just get some swings in and get my mind in golf mode before i go play a real course. The kicker is this. The layout is GREAT!! THE MAINTENANCE NOT SO MUCH. Course 1 is probably one of the harder tracks you can find in the boston metro area. The lack of maintenance makes it unbearable to pay for a full 18 on a weekend when your putts count. The greens are not cut at all and they will mess you up if you go anywhere else. Course 2 must be ignored and cut twice a month or something. Get someone out here to take care of this place it is just waiting to make the state gobs of money. Looking for courses near Boston. ______________________________________________ I play here about a dozen times a year, and typically, Ponky delivers an enjoyable and affordable golfing experience not too far from Boston. *** Some things I love about Ponky: *** - Affordability: $30 gets you 18. Even the schwag in the clubhouse (cool Indian-Head logos on their stuff) is moderately priced. Because of some "town-red-tape" issues, you purchase a cart separately from your greens fees $15/pp I think?). I typically walk anyway. - The layout: This course has wide-open confidence-inspiring holes as well as a few tight challengers that make you carefully select a club (like holes #2, #3 and #11). - Availability: Last weekend, some friends and I wanted to play. We literally called 6 local courses that had tournaments going on that basically made them unavailable on a Friday. Ugh! Luckily, our old friend Ponky was there for us. - Beer Cart: I don't typically get boozed up while playing golf. But sometimes a cold one feels great on a sunny day. Not many public, cheap courses in our area have a well-stocked beer cart piloted by a cute, friendly girl. Ponky does. - Range: A cheap range with a decent practice green - Parking: a Breeze. *** Some things I'm not crazy about: *** - Waiting: If you go at a busy time, be prepared to wait. There's sort of a hairpin turn around holes #2 and #3. More than once, I've waited (not even on a weekend) for like an hour at the second tee. What a buzz-kill as soon as you've started your round! - The starter: He's actually a pretty nice guy, but the man is like a million years old and seems to be generally overwhelmed. More than once, I've noticed that the back nine is empty while theres a line of 15 people waiting to tee off on the first tee. Trying to explain to this man that it mikght make sense to send someone off the back doesn't work. The notion is lost on him. - Bland course: I mean, I can't complain too much here. It's a cheap public track. But there aren't many holes that you look at and say, "Wow. What a beautiful look." Don't get me wrong: it's a varied course with plenty of variety, but no real gems. By contrast, a place like (similarly priced) Mount Hood in Melrose has a gorgeous holes that make you look forward to reaching them. - Maintenance: Again- I can't kill Ponky here. It's reasonably maintained for a public track. Its just not great. *** All in all *** I hope to play a hundred more rounds at Ponky. On a sunny day, It's a reasonably priced, fun place to play 18 if you live anywhere near Boston. read more

This double 18 hole complex has many short coming but I love it anyway. I have played here in leagues and just to golf for 30 years and it has always had deplorable conditions and rude patrons. It is not uncommon for people who were not in front of you come in from another hole and then cop an attitude and the management does nothing. There are no marshals, usually no water in the ball washers and never a towel on the ball washer stand, occasionally there is grass on t-boxes Am I being too picky? Oh have I mentioned there has been no food concession for over two years? You can buy a bottle of water in the "pro" shop or a handful of used balls but that is about it. Course one is on the right, previous reviewers have had this reversed. Course one has been rebuilt and in general is in good shape. It is a tough layout and due to lack of attention if plays as if they have it groomed for a US open, if your ball is more than a foot off most second cuts, you will likely not find it even after searching for 10 minutes and inspiring the group behind you to hit into you although you will probably find two or three top-flites and sometimes a Pro-V1. Yes play is painfully slow (see previously mentioned rude patrons). It is also slowed by a lack of yardage markers you cannot see unless you are within 10 feet of them, so you will frequently see golfers walking around looking for them. This could be solved with pairs of stakes for 100 and 150 yards. Course two, the one you can see while sitting in traffic on Rte 128. This course is dry and the ground is hard. the only holes that are always decent are 8, 9, 10, 11, 12 and 18. 17 is likely the worst hole I have ever played. Ironically 17 on course one is a little strange too. Yeah but I love it. read more

This is probably the worst course I've played in my life. the Greens look like fairways and you have to hit the ball as hard as you can for it to go anywhere. The fairways look like my backyard patchy and full of dead grass and dirt. There's bunkers full of water and then there's bunkers with massive mounds of sand in them. Plus it smells awful on the course like actually dog shit. The cart almost got stuck in the mud and muck multiple times with no signs warning you to keep out. This course was cheap for $35 but after about 2 holes I realized I was being ripped off and it should've been free to play. do not come here and waste your time and money. I just started playing golf last year and I lost my interest after I played here. the course was ok for me since I am a beginner I don't expect much and also It is cheap and affordable place to play. But There are some rude guys playing here and discriminate people who are not white. They are in their 50s and look like Donald Trump. I even saw several beer cans and bottles along the course.
