Greens were horrible and were covered in sand. The fairways were bad but had good tremendous bathrooms. And great service.

I'm giving it two stars since it's cheap and local and had some good laughs today but the course is beat to hell. Played the front 9 of course two. Tee boxes are in really bad shape where you almost need a hammer to get your tee in the ground however the greens weren't in that bad of shape. I'm looking forward to playing course one since the back 9 of it hasn't been open in many years. So hopefully that will redeem it. read more

This is better than a three star course as it's been rated here. Id probably go 3.5 stars but since that's not an option Ill go 4. The good, the layout is really interesting here. It's a nice Donald Ross design and they have 27 different holes to play. Definitely four stars on the layout. The price is also great, we paid $27 for 18 holes on a Wednesday morning. Could the course be a little better maintained? Sure. There are some brown spots out there on the fairway, the tee boxes could use some work and lastly there is no drinkable water on the course. Those are the negatives. The greens are in good condition but they are fairly slow. The maintainence is still decent though, this is a pretty good course. I will play many more times for sure. If they put some money into this course, they would have a real gem on their hands. read more

Bang for your buck for sure. The course is in alright shape and is definitely a good value...especially if you hoof it. Where else can you get a Donald Ross course for $30? This is a great place to go out and knock the ball around for a bit and anjoy an afternoon. Another good thing about this course is that there is one 18 and another 9 hole layout, so if you go out as a single you can get out pretty easily and if you do need to wait, there is a putting green and driving range to kill some time. The fairways and greens are in pretty good shape for the price but the sand traps are in rough shape in general. Its a definite hazard to get stuck in one. Since the course is a full size par 72 course over 6500 yards the value for the experience is definitely worth it. I'll be back a few times a year to knock the dust off the clubs every now and again. read more

It was my first time golfing at Ponkapoag, and I was very excited since I was with all my friends from college. While we were paying to golf, the man at the register was very snappy and rude. We didn't feel welcomed and proceeded to make us uncomfortable. We started golfing and the green was bumpy and uneven. We were close to just leaving and asking for a refund. If you want to play the worst course in America look no further than Ponkapoag golf course in Canton. The only reason we played is that we heard that it went through a major renovation last year. I don't know what the hell they renovated but it it is sad when the sand traps have more grass in them then the fairways. Do yourself a favor go to the local brewery and pony up $45 to drink and eat and save yourself some aggravation. read more

The greens are too poor for butting and slow, very bumpy, have great big brown patches and have a bad smell. The fairways are unkept, no sand in the traps, I wouldnt golf here for free!!! Good ole boy course. Told on phone no tee times first come first served. Showed up Sun am at 8am and was not let out until after 930. We sat and watched some old guy league/nursing home outing send out group after group. The antique starter in the shed on the respirator decided to give us a tee time. Whaaa?? Helmet golf, not well marked, many blind shots, guys just driving around picking up balls in the fairway its like a ^^&%^& SNL skit. But you get what you pay for. 30 bucks on a weekend cant expect too much. Joggers, dog walkers, hill dwellers just roaming around the course. Save yourself the aggrevation and play other courses within 1/2 hour drive. Canton, West Bridgewater, etc courses are FAR superior and much better overall experience. You go cheap you get cheap. Youve been warned. read more

If I could give 0 stars I would. Worst condition course I have ever played. Greens were good but everything else was like playing on burned up farmland including tee boxes. Hard ground was difficult to even put a tee into. A few nice holes but hard to see any good due to poor condition of course. read more

Absolute worst golf course in the Boston area, do not play here. I have been here maybe 5 times over three years and it seems no one cares to fix any of the problems this place has. The tee boxes are dirt the fairways are choppy patchy grass, the greens have dead grass in areas. They seem to have fixed the front 9 of course #1 but it was not open, unfortunately they should have used that money to fix all the other issues this course has. Donald Ross would roll over in his grave if he saw what they have done to his design. Do not play here until someone smart takes over and actually fixes the real issues with this course. Oh ya the pro shop doesnt care about pace of play they just want your money and then they'll send you out on the course with huge waits at each tee box. Save your money and go somewhere else this is hugely not worth it. Big disappointment Ponky I want to add that people are saying this is more about saving money and its a cheap course so dont expect much, well I like to play after work like most, I played yesterday for $19 at 5pm and couldnt get in 9 and its $12 for after 6pm. Check out Brook Meadows in Canton yes it can be pricey on weekends but if you go at 6pm its $17 you'll get all 9 holes in or the pro shop will let you know and you will have a great time on a well kept course and not have to deal with the horrible staff and shape of Ponkapoag. read more

Coming from Las Vegas I guess I'm a golf snob now but this course really is horrific. The course is difficult to navigate and is not well marked. They don't allow carts and somehow ran out of wheeled caddies(no clue what these are called). Walking a crappy course makes it 10 times worse. Throw in a DIRT, yes I said DIRT, filled green and this place really is awful. The only reason I can't give it 1 star is because they have a 9 hole twilight $12 special. The updating/overhaul of course #1 is complete. They did an unbelievable job. It's going to be tough to top it. Great job done by the state.

August 2012***** (not 12-2014) my reviews reposted somehow I don't really know how to review a golf course but I will describe my experience. there are two 18 hole courses here. I played nine on "course number 2" it has been dry here and the course shows. however the greens fees can't be beat. played with my 13 year old son, so I really didn't want to spend a lot. this place is VERY REASONABLE! However on many of the holes we tee'd off on crab grass. they had just aerated many of the greens on the loop we played. it is a municipal course and it shows by employment attitude (much like the skating rink here in the winter) I see the bad reviews here, and I don't get it I paid $19 for a weekday 9 hole loop, my son was $12 i guess you get what you pay for, but this IS a value. Don't expect the course to look like a $100 a round course. the fairways were well kept, they course looked good for the middle of a fairly dry summer one complaint: Crabgrass on many of the Tee boxes! really! a few were so thick that I think that they planted it! I would play here again! read more

I will never play here again. The course could be great - it's got "great bones" as they say about houses - but the upkeep is atrocious. Fairways ran the gamut from muddy to sandy to just plain NOT THERE - that's right, on two holes (the 17th being one) there were simply NO fairways, just a collection of weeds, crabgrass, and shorter rough down the middle of the hole. A few good holes along the back nine and a $30 weekend fee for 18 holes do not make up for the ABYSMAL wait times on every hole while playing behind very bad golfers who took 5-7 practice swings, only to hit 15-yard dribblers. This was the rule, rather than the exception, as I saw multiple groups with these sorts of players. Staff was friendly but not golf-intelligent, they are employees of the Dept of Conservation and Recreation as the course is on public land in the Blue Hills. There was one super cute girl at the snack bar, which was nice. Greens were good, rough was alright, sand traps were an embarrassment - not well-defined, concrete and rock showing through in some places. Also, a ton of blind tee shots which is really tough to deal with on a new course. There were also massive drainage pipes just sitting behind several greens, along with a large amount of standing water and muck. If you want to play a quick 9 after work, this might be ok, provided no one else is there, but I'm guessing you'll be dealing with a long wait for a very poorly maintained golf course. read more

very affordable and accommodating. I enjoyed myself at this course. The greens and fairways were were in good condition. My only complaint would be the condition of the tee boxes it made it very difficult to place plastic tees it was dried up and rocky. I would play this course another visit later on this season. read more

The course design is fine but the course makes death valley look like a tropical lagoon. Dry is an understatement. There are no fairways and no tee boxes everything is just hard packed dirt. Also, plan ahead there is no water on this course and there are no cart girls. The only thing green on this course are the greens fourtunately. Just spend a few more dollars and go to braintree municipal instead. read more

Do not play here unless you can get a tee time for course 1. Either way, the staff is completely incompetent. Called on a thursday for a saturday morning tee time (policy is to call at least 2 days in advance), we get there and they had us down for friday which is impossible according to their policy. We ended up getting to play, however, it was on course 2. What a terrible experience. Good luck hitting your ball anywhere with grass on this course, there is none. Tee boxes are full of weeds, barely have grass, and some are very close to the last holes green. I think the one place with grass were the sand traps (if you can even call them that). Greens were terrible. Some play fast, others very slow, but all of them had a large amount of divets and dead grass making it impossible to read. Probably wont ever play here again, unless its on course 1. Do not waste your money on course 2. Only reason this didnt get one star is because course 1 is pretty well kept. read more

Course 2: This was the only 18 hole Course for the past 15+ years. It's one of my favorite course layouts. The conditions here were never great, but were playable. Conditions started getting better while course 1 was being rehabilitated back to an 18 hole course, but since course 1 opened course 2 has regressed to the worst I've ever seen it. No grass or over grown grass. Can't get a tee in the ground because it's so hard. Greens are at least green but they let them grow too long. Course 1: Half of this course was closed decades ago because of constant flooding. They updated the flood control and have now spent a ton of money and time fixing the course. Now that it's in good shape they don't want you ruining it by using it. It honestly feels like they don't want you to play on it.. No walk-ons allowed, no singles, doesn't matter if the course is empty on a weekend afternoon, there going to resist letting you out on it. It's in decent shape, half the holes are tight and unforgiving, the other half are somewhat open. No ladies tee boxes, they somehow forgot to make them when they rebuilt the course. Red tees are found at the start of the fairways. read more

How can you go wrong with a Donald Ross designed course? Ponky somehow did. The layout is great but the conditions are terrible. Sand traps are full of dirt and rocks and the tees have no grass. The staff is just ok. Most of the starters are miserable and yell at the customers. $12 after 4 is a good deal but I'd rather pay $15 after 5:30 to play at Brookmeadow across town. read more

Possibly the worst I have ever played as far as condition goes. Got to the third hole called the clubhouse asked for a refund because of how bad the condition the course was in , I was told they never give refunds the greens were aerated but the wors job t I've ever seen it looked like Gophers had done it. The fairways were pure dirt ,no grass the sand traps were filled with leaves instead of blowing the leaves out they blew them into the sand trap.. this was not because of the time of year ,I also tried this course in July and was told it was under repair wait till I see it after September Well,I've seen it the lot he last time ..save your money they are a rip off ,that's all they want is your money and you stand no chance of getting it back. I really feel like they stole it from me they could have let us know how bad the greens were and how bad the fairways were but as I said it was all about stealing your money especially after asking for a refund after playing only two holes the answer I got was its not my problem. the story about seven million dollar renovation its bs , its 9 holes only to be played on Friday and Saturday only to be walked no golf carts and you stand no chance of getting a tee time for the 9 holes. In ending I hope someone else doesn't have their money stolen from them like I did stay away from Ponkapoag their thieves. All they had to do was refund my $31 read more

The course has drastically improved since some of these most recent reviews. Course 2 is in phenomenal shape. Greens are the best i have seen up there in many years. Course 1 currently has 9 holes open and reconstruction has begun on the other 9 holes. Still reasonably priced 30$ for 18 19$ for 9. Beer cart, driving range and snack bar. Highly recommend all bad reviewers to give Ponky a second shot. read more

cheap. cheap. cheap. you really do get what you pay for...which is just fine. leave the score card in the clubhouse, too many unplayable shots in play and the greens are downright awful. I haven't bothered with course one in a couple years, but course two has a nice design with some fun holes. Call ahead though, seems like there is always some event/camp going on, I have had to turn around a few times. A couple added features are the driving range, the putting green and pitching green...so even if you can't play, you can still kill an hour working on your game. Conveniently located less than a mile from the highway. read more

Went on 4/24/17. My friend called for a tee time and was asked if "Course #2" was ok. He said "I guess so". It seems that Course #1 was recently refurbished and was in good shape and was pretty booked up. Me and my friend chose to walk Course #2. The gentleman at the pro shop said "wow, you are going to walk Course #2, that's quite a walk". Me and my friend are novice golfers. That being said, we are not "golf snobs". Tee boxes were unmarked and in bad shape. The course was in rough shape but that can't take from the fact that this layout is stunning. The greens were fine. My friend is a senior and paid $17 to walk 18 holes. I paid $27. Well worth the money for this beautiful old school course. A bonus was when we were walking past the putting green and a gentleman was getting out of his wheel chair and into one of Ponkapoag's 2 handicap stand up golf chairs. These allow a handicap person to actually stand up and swing a club. I had to stop and ask him all about it. Quite fascinating. I watched this gentleman swing an iron from the driving range. He could hit better than I could and he was using one hand. I applaud his "nothing is going to stop me" attitude. My take away from this day was when we came around the corner of I believe the 13th hole and was graced with a stunning view of "old blue' (Blue Hills). This made my day. What a site. The up and down hill course was also quite a workout. If I had a million dollars, I would give half to this course to restore it to the gem it was before (and could be still). read more

Played the newly renovated #1 course. I don' t know where they supposedly spent 6 million $. Couldn't see anything that would justify that expenditure. Couldn't tell which was worst, the tees, the greens, or the fairways. There were few signs showing the way to the next tee. We drove around trying to find the next tee on three occasions. Finally gave up after 9 holes. The absolute worst day ever on a golf course. SAVE YOUR MONEY. Go somewhere else. read more
