Went here last night with family and had my hubby order for me since I was running late. Of course, I gave him some guidance on what I was craving. We all ended up with different meals and plenty of bread, however, stale. I was a little disappointed by the overall quality of everything, but that's what you get at a cafeteria style type place. I used to come here as a kid and remember better quality. The eggplant parmesan was 90% cheese and the bed of pasta it laid on was nothing special. I was shocked by the strangeness of my "side salad" that was a small bowl of beans, peppers and feta. Scratching my head at that one. I wanted to like this place so bad for my good memories of it, but by glancing at the pizza others ordered, I could tell it wasn't the same. Sunday Sept 30, 2018 6:30pm Terrible. We came here when they first opened. It was amazing. Yes it's been years. Sadly today it's terrible. The girl who took our order was literally leaning over, elbow on the counter, taking orders that she clearly knew nothing about or was so disinterested she could have cared less. We sat down and the server brought out our first tow slices mine was completely wrong, but I was hungry so bit in. COLD. Its pizza, where's the hot pizza. Next slice colder. I mean seriously cold. I asked the server to take it back and and please heat this up, its cold. He said "oh you want it hot?" I just stared and said yes. Salad was good. Bread basket good. And the baked clams were good too. Not great, but good. Until.... Another server walks up puts his whole thumb on the clam plate with a clam still clearly remaining, and asks "are you done?" I got upset and said "no we are not, there's a clam right there, where your thumb is all over our plate!" I looked down and was done. Done with the entire experience. Oh Pompei you once were and now sadly you're not. I personally will never go back. And you do not do justice to such a beautiful Italian neighborhood or street. read more

**ATTENTION - ATTENTION** For 2018 on Thanksgiving Day I felt it would be a great idea to have a Full-Sized Pan of Baked Mostaccioli w/ Tomato Cream Sauce catered for my coworkers. Based upon past dining experiences over the years from Pompei I was praying this place could have a special place in my heart. Wow, I was Totally Wrong; this idea turned out to be a disaster. [Granted] Thanksgiving is usually a day of traditional turkey, dressing, gravy, cranberry sauce & deserts... I wanted to do something different for my coworkers for our annual potluck. I called Pompei twice in 1-week to confirm plans for the baked pasta which seemed like a seamless task over the telephone. The day of ordering I called at 10am on Wednesday and spoke with Nicole who mentioned I should get extra sauce. I confirmed for the extra sauce, and instantly she placed me on hold. After waiting 5-7minutes on the telephone another person name Paul (who allegedly was the manager) answered to confirmed the details of my order for a 9pm pick-up. Perfect!! At 9pm I arrived to Pompei, and they did not have my order correct on the restaurant kitchen ticket. They did not have my name for the order when I gave my name twice over the phone. They tried selling me 2-pastas when I only requested for 1-pasta. Also, I requested for extra sauce which the cashier confirmed saying it was included. Lastly, they gave me oven reheat instructions which indicated to reheat to preheated oven for 350degrees and cook for 13minutes which actually turned out to be 75-MINUTES because it was a full size pan. Overall, the staff appreciated the dish, BUT the pasta lacked flavor, it was very dry, the reheating instructions were totally incorrect, the customer service was lousy and the manager Paul & Nicole did not have any concern toward meeting the needs of the customer request after spending $100.28. I was a super huge fan of Pompei on Taylor Street in the early 2000's, BUT based upon the locations (which are now out of business) on Wellington & Sheffield Street, and the Ohio & Fairbanks; Not before long the Taylor Street location will eventually follow in that direction /OUT OF BUSINESS. I've been a customer at this locations for over a decade. It's one of my "go-to" places. They have a lot of items to choose from. My favorite dishes are the baked mostaccioli and the caprese salad. Their pizzas and strudels are good - not exceptional, but very edible. I hadn't been here in a while - just like many other of my "go-to" places - I got a little tired/bored or Pompei, so I started going elsewhere for lunch. Until today - I had to run an errand across the street and I figured - why not? I asked the guy taking my order: which of the strudels are veggie only - he told me the "heart healthy" - cool, I will have one of those. I also had a taste for french fries - so I got an order of those too - and he asked "seasoned or not seasoned" - I figured - let's be adventurous, I will take the seasoned. I got my order "to go" and waited, and waited, and waited - one of the guys who worked there saw me standing for a while and took a look at my receipt so he could check on my order (thanks for noticing, so appreciated)....the guy who took my order saw this and said - we're making the fries, their coming up soon...which they did....and let me tell you - HOLY CRAP, THESE ARE SOME GOOD "FRIES"!!!! First of all, they are more like potato discs - fried up (but not too greasy) and covered in some yummy cheesy/herby stuff that is oooooh so good! I debated between a 4 & 5 star rating, and I haven't decided until I was done writing the review. The restaurant is easy enough to find from the Polk stop on the Pink line, and it is quite spacious inside. I loved the "Italians in Chicago" mural, and especially loved the original family photo on the wall, circa 1909. Paying tribute to the ones that built what you have is always a nice token. I had the homemade meatballs for an appetizer (a friend who is Italian/Sicilian says this dish is a great indicator of the cuisine for the entire restaurant), and they were GIGANTIC! 2 enormous meatballs in homemade fresh sauce, and WOW was it delicious!!! then the pizza streudel came, and I was completely full for about 6 hours afterwards. and it was very VERY reasonably priced too!!! read more

I came in here with a group of friends for a party. I have never been here before that. This is possibly now my favorite restaurant of all time. I ordered the ravioli, which is my usual go to at Italian restaurants. However, this is probably the best ravioli that I've ever had in my entire life. Everything about it was amazing. It was so rich in flavor and the portion was fairly large, which is always a hit or miss. The salad that came with it was refreshing and provides a great combo with the ravioli. The server was very friendly and explained all of the questions that I and the group had. She was kind and came by our table often enough to help us but not too much to be annoying. I would definitely recommend that you ask them about the secret dessert menu because the items are so good! I'll be definitely coming back here in the future! read more

Which is literally a 3-5 minute drive from this location and it took almost 2 hours to get her food. I never expected to find such a wonderful establishment on such a weak street in terms of food. Taylor street is genuinely so mid. Pompei and Jarabe are a couple of exceptions to this. The server Neil is also an absolute G. I heard he is the world's fastest cannoli maker. If the Pompei staff had an all-star lineup, Neil would 100% be voted as the starting point guard, playmaker, and court facilitator. He commands the floor with class and efficiency. I would probably go back again, not to order food, but just to witness the man whip out food to tables with a smile on his face. It's awesome that this place is right down the street from where I work. So far, I haven't been able to walk over there because of the weather, but I'm sure once the weather warms up a bit, I can take a long lunch and stroll over there for some pasta. I usually go with one of their specials of the day, but I've really enjoyed anything in a white wine sauce. I haven't been into the physical restaurant, but have ordered Pompei via Postmates many times by this point. I was shocked that the Yelp rating is below 4 stars so I figured I would write a review. Pompei consistently has delicious, fresh tasting pastas (favs are the gnocchi and ravioli), and everything else my husband and I have tried has been divine. For dinner, we like to each get a pasta and split an order of meatballs--they are huge so you really only need 1 each! The pasta dishes are a generous portion size, sometimes I save half for lunch the next day. I also appreciate the yummy fresh bread that comes with each order. Highly recommend. read more

I have celiac disease which means I cannot eat anything with gluten in it because my body thinks it's poison. I ordered and paid for a gluten free pizza, and waited the extra time required to make the gluten free pizza. I ate it and everything was fine but a few hours after I got home I had a horrible reaction and was vomiting for hours. Its safe to say I didn't receive the correct pizza. I never expect zero cross contamination or for equipment to be cleaned for gluten free food, but when I order gluten free I expect to not be throwing up for hours after. read more

As a college student, coming here won't break the bank, but the pasta is so fresh and it's cool to see it made right before your eyes! Inconsistent is probably the best way to describe Pompei on Taylor. We usually order delivery from their Lakeview location and it's always good, but you never know what will happen on Taylor Street. We just had an early dinner and it was terrible from start to finish. When we were ordering, the owner or manager was berating an employee in front of us about cherries. They were apparently so upset about last night's desserts that the woman ringing us up stopped with us and joined in. He finally left and started screaming at someone else. This set the tone. The food was the worst I've ever had at any Pompei location. My ravioli was hard and my wife's spaghetti had an unidentifiable object in it (apparently a burnt bone). The meatballs were clearly at least a day old. Maybe instead of screaming about cherries, the owners should focus on the food quality and service. read more

Just ate lunch here as it was recommended to us. This fast-food style in a sit-down atmosphere was better than I expected! The pizza (2 big pieces per serving) was pretty good, as was the garlic cheese bread (which used more of a toasted panini bread). The establishment is clean and pleasant, with helpful staff. My family has been coming here since the 70s when the business was on Loomis. The food is good most of the time. However they treat their customers like garbage and try to nickel and dime you for everything. If I call in my order it's cheaper than if I walk in to pick it up?? If the phones are down, they don't care and will charge you the extra price. If I place my order for a half a tray, 6 slices of pizza, online, and ask for a bag instead of a box THEY CHARGE AN EXTRA $10!!!!???! Once I realized and went in to ask a manager why the price was different at the register than what it said I'd be charged online she said that is their policy and was very dismissive and walked away. We've had every family party ever in the banquet room here and their attitude and lack of care for their customers is why we will recommend other places moving forward and not give this location any more of our business or money. This is another one of those places that falls into the "deluxe fast food" categories. The prices are generally favorable for the amount of food you get, but it mostly tastes pre-prepared, frozen, and out of a can. I realize this isn't fine dining, but the food came out within just a few minutes, and I can see why. I didn't finish my huge bowl of pasta then forgot the leftovers in my friends car... but I said he could keep it. I sampled my friends ravioli and I thought it was decent, but still left something to be desired. The dessert was pretty good, but pretty run of the mill as far as desserts go. Popped in for a quick lunch before hitting the road after a meeting. A colleague described it as an Italian Panera in concept, and I don't entirely disagree, but the food was much better. I had a slice of tomato basil pizza and a small Caesar salad. Both were nicely sized portions and incredibly priced. The Caesar salad was great -- I kept telling myself I needed to stop eating it, but found my fork going in for more. The dressing is some of the best I have had. Next time I would get the dressing on the side or ask them to go lighter with it - it was saturated - but it was delicious. The pizza was awesome. I thought this place was a sit down Italian restaurant but I was wrong. It's more of a fast food type of place where you can get a quick bite of Italian food and be on your way. The menus is big and the food is pretty good. It's like a large cafeteria really. Come in, walk down the line, tell the staff your order, pay at the cashier, grab a number and sit and wait for your food. My bf raved about this place because apparently a lot of famous people eat here. I finally came in here today. Honestly, wasn't impressed. It's like a cafeteria style Olive Garden, the only difference was the fast service. They offered different kind of pizza slices and stuffed pizza, pasta, sandwiches , soup and Italian desserts. Basically menu was all over the place. We ordered their panini and soup combo , and some kind of vodka sauce pasta. Flavor and ingredients was lacking. Also, we ordered it thinking it will be like the picture in their menu, but it was far from it. This meal came out to $19 something not worth it. We also ordered the stuffed pizza (the works, hearty, and beef fajita?) it's decently price and the only thing worth getting in this place, these came out to almost $5 a piece .. would come back for this because it's cheap and tastewise it's 3/5? Tiramisu is ok too. Overall, not a great representation of Italian cuisine, your Italian grandma would definitely get mad, but it's great that they are nearby UIC. Students will definitely appreciate their fast service and cheap food option. read more

The place has a good look to it so I felt confident it would have good food. It is a cafeteria like place where you go down the line and order what you want but you have to wait for them to bring it out,it's a long wait. The food was bland, I had Angel hair pasta with marinara and had to salt and pepper it up. All in all an ok place. With the drink it was 12.89. Pasta is dirt cheap so to much for a below average plate of pasta. I probably wouldn't go back. read more
