Great fast service & food!! A MUST GO place when by SA Alamo/Riverwalk. It's like taking a step…read moreback in time! Oldest restaurant in SA- established as a Saloon in 1917 and turned delicatessen in prohibition. Staff were extremely friendly, encouraged me to walk around, and showed pride when telling me the history of the building & restaurant. Showed me the old bank vault. 5 star service!! Multiple seating options. Large separate room for dining or parties. Cool old bar & cash register. I got there when they first opened. No wait. Then what appeared to be regulars started slowly rolling in. I enjoyed their famous cane sugar root beer in an ice cold mug ($4.50 and comes with one refill) Potato Pancakes - comes with delicious large bowl of applesauce Side of brautworst - felt like the german thing to do. Not my typical breakfast. Should have asked for a tad of their mustard. Open 8a-230p

Our…read moreserver caught me off guard at first because some of his responses came across as a little rude. After a bit, I realized he was joking, but it just wasn't my style. It happened a couple more times during the meal, and I still found it a little off-putting. As for the food, breakfast was just okay. It wasn't bad, but nothing really stood out or made me want to order it again. The atmosphere, though, was the highlight for me. I loved the interior, it has a relaxed vibe and makes you feel like you've stepped back in time. Overall, it was a decent experience. I'd definitely be willing to give this place another shot for dinner the next time we're in San Antonio, since I've heard that's when they really shine.

This is the place for Philly Cheesesteak! Gino's deli is also good, but this is equally wonderful…read more Those are the only 2 places you should consider if you're a cheesesteak snob like me. This cannot be beat. Get the American cheddar (and extra if you love cheese). Get extra red sauce (jalapeno salsa or something). I like my cheesesteak with mushrooms and jalapeños. This is definitely big enough to share unless you have a beast for a husband. Get 2 and put 1/2 in fridge for tomorrow. It gets a tad soggy, but it's almost even better the next day. The bread here is amazing. The staff is super rad. The location and vibe is spot on. Do not miss this secret spot.

Unpopular opinion incoming: I'm not overly impressed. A good sandwich is one of my favorite things,…read moreso this joint's been on my radar for a while. So, when co-workers wanted to go yesterday, I jumped on it. Don't get me wrong. I love the vibe of this place. I LOVE their story. It's very NY/Northeastern deli feel (they're from Pittsburgh, but you get my drift, right!?). No nonsense. Small inside area. No tables inside. Just enough room to look at the menu, order, and go wait outside. I opted for the chicken bacon ranch on hoagie. What came out was a decent size sandwich, but incredibly messy and soggy. There was so much juice/ liquid the sandwich quickly became unmanageable and just disintegrated. Look, if you're going to serve a sandwich that messy, please upgrade your napkins. It was a one bite - two napkin ratio. The sandwich was good, but the mess and difficulty eating it just took away any enjoyment. Additionally, the flies outside rivaled the worst I've experienced. Do you remember the scene in the Lost World, Jurassic Park movie when the hunters found the Rex nest!? Okay, okay, maybe not that bad, but it was a lot. Hang some fly bags or strips or somethin'. Found price to be a little high. By the time I bought chips and a drink, plus tip: $22. Just FYI: my co-worker disagrees. He thought it was the BEST SANDWICH HE'D EVER HAD. So, yes, go give them a try, but bring a beach towel for clean up.

O---M---GOSH! if you havent tried this place, RUN, do not WALK!…read more my group of 6 all ordered different sammies, ALL WERE LOADED down with proteins! AKA MEAT! toppings were fresh around the board - and everyone raved about their sandwiches - all had different breads and they were talked about too. i got the french dip $15 and could only manage to put away 1/4 of it. meat was tender & well seasoned, good cheese ratio (i skipped onions & horseradish mayo) and au jus was very good. cant remember the last time a group order or various dishes received rave reviews across the board! side special of carrot fries was hot, fresh, well salted & surprisingly yummy. i dont like carrots - in any form - but i guess i have now found a form i like! side cheese curls was SO chewy-licious seasoned in garlic butter! and dont skip the desserts! several of us got the lemon bar $4 which was everything bright and good! i also got a NY style b&w cookie $5 that was a big as my hand. service was fast & friendly and amazingly perfectly accurate - important if you are taking food to go. which might be a good idea at peak times. seating at bar, and a few hightops with 2 hightops for 2 outside. also a picnic table outside. we all have other dishes we are anxious to go back and try. and in a town where a lot of places roll up their shops after lunch, its nice that turcotte's stays open til 9. meats by the pound available as well.

It was probably close to a lb of meat. The roast beef was fresh and I ate it all after a 5 mile hike. The venue is super cute and surprising to be in a strip mall. The family who owns and runs it is super nice. I would come back to try their other sandwiches because my friend said the Reuben was really good. I will update my review after I try another sandwich.
