A classic building with a great deli menu and homemade desserts. We tried the gourmet cheese spread and it was delicious. The muffuletta had chunky olives instead of a traditional schmear on soft bread. The Rueben had plenty of sliced beef & good pumpernickel. Haven't eaten here in well over twenty years, and this has been on my bucket list for quite some time. Well, today was the day to scratch it off the to-do list. Mom and I walked in a few minutes before Noon expecting to battle a large crowd. Surprisingly, we were able to walk right in and sit down at a table of our choosing. I ate the Reuben sandwich, chips, pickle, and a small salad. Utterly delicious and the best in the state. No other Reuben sandwich even comes close. Sorry, Jason's Deli, yours sucks in comparison! Mom enjoyed her food as well. Our server took very good care of us and came to check on us periodically. All the staff was very friendly and gave out a family vibe. While the service was wonderful, the ladies who took my order and gave it to me, I had it to-go, the food was definitely lacking. I ordered the brown bag lunch 1 with the "muffuletta" and I say that in quotes because that was a huge stretch. It was deli meats, with little to no dressing of any kind i.e. Mayo, mustard, oil/vinegar etc. to be found, and chopped canned black and green olives. This was all on a very chewy sub roll that had very little flavor. It was one of the saddest sandwiches I ever had. Thankfully the lunch came with a salad and brownie which were the only saving grace of the whole meal. I really hope this was a one off and the other sandwhiches are better. read more

I stopped here with coworkers while passing through town for lunch and must say that I do not understand the hype regarding the food. First, this is supposedly the oldest deli in Texas and I must say that the building and interior are pretty cool. It's pretty open and spacious inside and is located in the historic downtown. The menu consists of basic deli food, like sandwiches and soups and salads, with a couple of German dishes. I ordered the Ladies Special, which came with a half tuna or chicken sandwich, chips, and a side soup. For the soup, I chose the broccoli cheddar. One of my coworkers ordered the cheese and meat plate. Others ordered salads. I will say that the food came out pretty quickly and the portions were decent (the meat and cheese plate was enough for two). But honestly, the food tastes like it was something that you could purchase from a grocery store deli and out together yourself. The tuna salad was just tuna and mayo, there wasn't anything else in it. And the half sandwich was pretty small. The soup was bland and could have easily come from a can. The meat and cheese tray was basically cold cuts and sliced store bought cheese. I was disappointed. I would have loved to have just come here to see the store then gone elsewhere to eat. Based on YELP reviews and much in need of a decent meal...I stopped here for lunch today. Ordered the chicken salad melt (1/2 sandwich) and the broccoli soup. Let me say this...my sandwich/soup combo was more than delicious and it kept me going for most of the day! Olga was my server and she was very friendly and attentive. The oldest deli in Texas! This place is old! It has lots of cool old stuff tacked on the wall. Apparently, Victoria used to have a Macaroni Railroad going through it. Somehow this deli had something to do with it. The original Fossati family was Dutch, I think. They have a Dutch lunch as their most famous item. The Dutch Lunch consists of a huge pile of cold cut meats and cheeses with some fresh slaw and potato salad. The spicy beer mustard was some of the best mustard I've had in a long time. The coolest part of dining here is the old building and the bar that you can eat lunch at. The service was fast and friendly. The prices were quite fair, especially considering the huge pile of meat and cheese that I got. To drink, they serve frosty rootbeer, tea, and lots of beers. Parking can be a bit of a challenge on the town square of Victoria, but if you circle around enough, you'll find a spot. This place is quite a great find. read more

We had an excellent lunch here. The atmosphere was interesting, service was prompt and friendly. I had the Dutch lunch. It had a vinegar cole slaw that was delicious. It also had an excellent potato salad. Comes with choice of bread and the marbled rye was wonderful. My dining partner had the muffaletta. Not a traditional style at all but very tasty. Iced tea tastes fresh and the bathrooms were clean. Olga, our waitress, was friendly and helpful. We went to lunch here and sat at the bar. It was somewhat crowded when we came with a party of six, but a bunch of tables weren't cleared off so we sat at an empty bar. Ordered almost immediately and got our drinks right after that. Then the wheels came off. Almost in order, one person would get their food, then another ten minutes later. It kept going in this cycle until the second to last person got their food and the first person was gone ten minutes ago. So on that aspect, service was very poor. My favorite deli anywhere! Omg. The chicken salad is the best. Family owned and still operated with some help you will find food made with love. Parking can be a bit of a pain as it's street parking but hey, at least you don't have to pay for parking in the area unless you stay too long and get a parking ticket. The merlot wine has a nice bold rich flavor. And from what I remember in the past they often listened to what the suppliers have to say in their sections. They have a decent variety of beers. They have a daily lunch special everyday. And it's not heated up from last week but made fresh. The brownies are like chocolate heaven and even go better with ice cream. The coffee is Cains so if you've ever been in a restaurant business ya know it's pretty good. They get a lot of local business so it gets a bit busy and probably more so around paydays. This was a charming place to have lunch at. I finally made it down there between their odd hours to be able to have lunch. The place was pretty packed. I found it funny because there was all men sitting at the bar, and mostly all women eating at the tables. My fiancé noticed it, and it was pretty funny looking around. They were busy, but I guess they are always like that, according to the table next to us. It took awhile to order, awhile to get our food, and awhile to get the bill at the end of the meal. I ordered a Frank Napoleon Sub Sandwitch, it was decent. I expected more though. My fiancé had a Ruben Sandwitch, it was excellent. It was however a little small, with basically one piece of meat folded in half. My fiancé was still hungry. It was only $6, so he would of ordered another sandwitch, but the waitress took too long to get there and by then we just wanted the check. The waitress apologized for why everything took so long, I guess they have another room in the back. The only thing that I saw that was off was one of the waitress's was walking around barefoot. I had to take a double take. We couldn't find parking close, but when we left driving by, we noticed they had parking in the back. This seems like a real local spot. Excellent service (groups phone ahead), excellent ambiance, average food especially for a deli. The reuben came quickly, lower bread slice was soggy but more importantly they used a couple of SLICES of processed meat, not the mound of shaved corned beef they should've used. Very cool ambiance. I expected food to be terrible to mediocre but I was pleasantly surprised. The german/dutch influences are great - the coleslaw is AMAZING! it is not your ordinary slathered in mayo coleslaw - its freaking good and doesnt make you want to go on a diet afterwards. The true beauty of this place is in its simplicity - i mean its just sandwhiches...but damn they use good ingredients, cheese you can actually TASTE (opposite of subway) and deli-meats with actual flavor. Even the plain white bread is tasty somehow! how? because it isnt mass-produced, it is made by someone who actually cares if it tastes good and with the experience to actually create something lovely.
