Pollo Campero is a mucho famoso chicken establishment. The first time I had Pollo Campero was at the grand opening of the Elmhurst, NY (the Hialeah of NY) location back in 2004. We ended up waiting 3hrs on line and it was juicy, succulent, and flavorful - possibly the best chicken I've had. The Z100 Elvis Duran morning show was constantly raving about it, Scary Jones stated "Pollo Campero no comparo" infering that no chicken compares to Pollo Campero. Passed by on the way to Home Depot and saw it packed with South American customers. Hungry from all of the manly work I've been doing around the house, I ordered the #4 Grilled 1/2 chicken. It was spot on. Pollo Campero's secret marinade was infused throughout the juicy and tender chicken breast and thighs and although I was full, I had no problem pushing myself to finish the quite ample and plump chicken breast. The yuca side was absolutely amazing, they use the same technique I do at home. Par-boil and then deep fry resulting in a crispy exterior and a smooth creamy interior. You cannot find yuca fries like Campero's at any other establishment in Miami. Cuban restaurant yuca almost always makes me nauseated. They no compero! Don't let some bad yelp reviews deter you, I passed this joint probably 20 times before I gave in to finally give them a try. No regrets. read more

For chicken, I like Pollo Campero. The atmosphere is clean, the service is good and quick, and there's a small salsa bar. And it's often crowded, for a good reason - the chicken is good. I liked the fried chicken more than the grilled chicken. The grilled chicken was a bit too heavily seasoned for my taste, hence a bit salty than what I would have liked - it may have been the cook's fault though and a random occurrence. But judging from what I've had, I'd probably go for Pollo Tropical's grilled chicken - it's slightly bigger and not overly seasoned as my grilled chicken was here. If it was slightly less seasoned, then I'd pick this place over Pollo Tropical. But for fried chicken, I liked the crust as it seems to be less greasy than several other fried chicken places (although I still profess my love for Church's chicken). The sides are tasty and varied for a fast food joint - such as the spicy Campero beans (el charro beans with pork bits). There's caesar salad, french fries, yuca fries, black beans, etc. And a meal usually comes with either a dinner roll or a corn tortilla. read more

I remember when this place opened, and everyone wondered what is Pollo Campero? Well, those who have traveled to Central America know that Pollo Campero is one of the largest fast food chains in that region, and that they sell fried chicken. Their fried chicken, unlike KFC or Popeyes, is thinly battered, and is crunchy and crisp and delicious. It is a great alternative when looking for fried.... chicken. Sounds good, even great, until you actually arrive at this location. Their chicken was decent, a bit under seasoned, and a bit undercooked. I have eaten here many times, but when this review is taking place, the food was just bad. I left the chicken on the table, half eaten. For a side I had the black beans and rice. It actually tasted like black beans from a can, not seasoned at all. And the rice, well, it was OK. The french fries and the fried yucca are good, but the sides that include rice are just bad. As far as service goes, I was surprised to see that they now have a system where you get a number after ordering, seat at the table and someone will bring your food served on a porcelain plate with real flatware to dig in. Two ladies are constantly running the room, cleaning and running food. The cashier taking the orders is constantly saying "thank you" and "have a nice meal", so much that I was reminded of the politeness and amiability of Central Americans. She even got out of the register on her down time to greet everyone at their tables and see if everything was fine. I was amazed. Not with the food though. Pollo Campero was a solid four stars contender, but now the food is so mediocre that if it wasn't for the outstanding human touch of their employees, a one star would be stamped on this review. The food is not that great. It used to be good. The cashier lady, Sury, is horrible. Never made eye contact, for my order wrong, joking around with employees... I understand you might have fun at work and talk with others.. that's ok.. but this lady would not stop and it seemed as if she was doing me a favor taking my order. She even got a little upset when I told her she got my order wrong... please re-train the employees and teach them customer service. Ok, so browsing the reviews below, it seems that most people give Campero two or three stars. I disagree. Really. I ordered a chicken taco platter through the drive thru and waited about ten minutes for my meal, wish I was ok with since I figured they were cooking the chicken. Boy was I wrong. I get to my house and ate the first taco, which was rather enjoyable. Then, I bite into my second taco and immediately encounter a weird, hard texture. Let me spare you the gross details...long story short, the chicken strip in the taco was completely and utterly RAW inside. PINK RAW! Disgustingly RAW! Sickeningly RAW! Being of Guatemalan descent, I've always heard stories of how addictively delicious this place is -- so much so that legend has it that planes from Guatemala to the U.S. smelled of Pollo Campero. I finally had the chance to check out what all the fuss is about. Just like the add on the side of the box, the fried chicken is tender, juicy and crunchy. In fact, the chicken is unbelievbably tender and juicy. I was happy to discover that this fried chicken is not greasy at all. I sampled the personal 2-pc meal and chose to get all white meat. My little box came with a large breast piece and small wing, but it was just enough to hit the spot. You are given several sides to choose from in additional to a roll or corn tortilla -- all for the low cost of $5. The tasty chicken makes me proud to be Guatemalan, but I can only give 3 stars because it's GOOD but nothing that changed my life. Some how I always find myself driving by this place and wondered what the fuss was all about since the place always seemed to be busy. So today I once again found myself driving by and decided to take it for a test run. I went thru the drive thru and grabbed a the number 1; 2 fried thighs, tortillas, campero rice and added the cole slaw for an additional $1. The chicken was nice and crispy. I liked the spices. It was a bit greasy, but not too much. The rice was interesting to say the least. It consistesd of rice, carrots, peas, and tomato paste. The flavor wasn't the best. The tomato paste was too overwhelming. Maybe it was this batch or not. The cole slaw and tortillas were not bad. It had been a long time since I had come back to Pollo Campero, and finding myself within the area, I remembered that I had another inexpensive, yet healthy-ish fast food option than Pollo Tropical, so I thought "what the heck." I headed on over and was greeted by the friendly cashiers. I noticed the quarter with a side cost the same as Pollo's -- $4.99 and as my side, I decided to give the campero rice a try, as it sounded appetizing. I also wanted to see if I liked it more than Pollo Tropical's. The cashier asked me for another side and I settled on the fried yucca. I did not know at that time that this second side was not included with my meal, and that this was a lead-on trap, so I thought I'd mention it so that you don't also become a sucker, like me. Included with your meal is a bread roll or tortilla, so if you prefer to make a sandwich out of your chicken, you have the option to do so. As others mentioned, you get a number, sit, and wait for them to bring you your food. They give you actual silverware and a dish, not styrofoam containers or paper plates. In the meantime, there's a salsa bar where you can have your pick of sauces. The green tomatillo salsa was nice and spicy, and made for a great choice to pour over the rice and give it a kick. I tried the rice prior to applying the sauce and preferred it to Pollo Tropical's. Pollo Tropical's rice tastes sort of like plastic. It tends to be hard and undercooked, or mushy. The rice here had a good consistency -- cooked just right, and had a citrusy flavor. The chicken was juicy and well-seasoned. I actually liked it better than Pollo Tropical's. I was impressed. The customer service was great, though a bit overbearing. I think I was asked 3 times if I was happy and enjoying my meal. I felt bad for the employee, Lupita. It seemed she never stopped. When she wasn't taking orders or ringing up customers, she was sweeping or picking up dishes (you leave your dishes on the table after eating, and they pick up after you. With lines reminiscent of Saudi Arabia's first McDonalds or a new Halo release, I had to wonder if people suddenly forgot how to fry chicken or if Jesus himself had decided to open a chicken chain. This place had enormous lines for months and we wondered what all the fuss was about. I don't know if Jesus ever put crack in his batter, but the long lines have long since disappeared and after visiting, my eyesight still sucks. I'm guessing he sold it. The fried chicken is crispy, moist inside and pairs surprisingly well with their green sauce. Without the green sauce it has a dash of that fast-food taste. Rice is a model of tasteless parboiledness but their beans are really good and their yuca fries were actually fried clouds. I wish they had the cilantro dipping sauce for the yucca. Ok, I went here on Sunday for the second time. The first time I went I was not impressed with their anorexic chicken pieces and the price of the meal. Plus it was the week of opening day and the place was crazy with people and the line reached outside and you had to wait outside to get in to the next line. Not my idea of going out to eat. So I gave it a second chance and it was better. The place is still the same service. You order your food and it is deliver to your table. The lady brought us our order incomplete cause the yuca fries weren't done. Fast food should always have food ready, but its Miami, Little Havana. The chicken is very juicy and tasty. We waited and the lady finally brought out our yuca fries. They give you 5 pieces but they were very soft and yummy. I'm glad I didn't opt out for the fries. Overall the place is okay. I ordered grilled chicken meal with white rice and black beans and yuca fries. The yuca fries were good. The rice was hard, had to throw away. Beans were edible, just okay. I found grilled chicken too salty, too greasy and with way too much condiment. Had to throw most of it away. I am used to Pollo Tr. so maybe that is why I didn't like it. I was expecting something different. Maybe the fried chicken is good for those who eat fried chicken. There was a long line when I went on Christmas day. It was full of people placing incredibly large orders so obviously some people like it a lot.
