A DJ came in and was mixing Latin music which gave an upbeat vibe. I truly felt like I was on vacation in the Dominican Republic. The food was even better than the ambiance. We really were sure what we wanted to order but after speaking with our waitress we both ordered Mama Fango stuffed with meat. This is a dish consisting of sweet plantains mashed, seasoned, and fried into a little bowl shape then stuffed with your meat of choice. I went with the white chicken. The flavors were complex and overall delicious. The white sauce is like an Alfredo with cilantro. It is a very filling dish and I ate every last bite. My friend ordered the same but filled with churrasco. The meat was tender and rich with flavor. If you are celebrating a birthday, then this is the place to be. They make such a scene with light up signs and cakes and singing... the whole place becomes a party. I've never seen anything like this before and it was great! My Cuatro Leches cake came with a candle and happy birthday written in raspberry jam across the plate. The caramel top was a nice touch and complimented the cake well. The best part was the service. Since we were only having dessert and an after dinner cordial with coffee, we opted to sit at the bar where a nice gentleman welcomed us and shared his thoughts on the dessert menu. You'll see from the pictures that we were not left wanting by the time we finished. The Flan was delicious and the relaxed atmosphere made for an excellent experience. The menu has a couple of different types of tacos, including lengua, carne asada, al pastor, carnitas, chorizo, chicken. They also have tortas, burritos, and breakfast platters. All tacos were listed for $2.75 except for lengua, which was $3. I think this place is cash only. I've tried the lengua, carne asada, al pastor, and chorizo tacos. The tacos are beautifully simple and really solid for the most part. They all came out hot, with double tortillas, onion, cilantro. They give you a generous bag of radishes, lime, and hot sauce, which is great. The only one I wasn't a huge fan of was the chorizo, as the meat was cut up while still being in the casing, instead of being taken out of the casing, which I much prefer. The meats were also fairly dry, so this probably isn't the place for you if you want something ultra juicy. However, the lengua was an exception as it was very tender and moist. With this said, I still very much enjoyed all of the tacos I had. The best thing about this place is that they're charging very reasonable prices at present. There are a lot of taco places which charge $6 or more per taco, which is absurd in my opinion. So I'm glad this place exists and will happily continue to patronize this place as long as prices remain reasonable. Cheers.

Last time I was at The Refuge, it was beautifully decked out for the holidays and this time it was no less lovely with early fall decor (not quite Halloween time yet, so maybe it'll look a little different in a few days). I just love the vibe here and after being so used to dining in tiny city establishments (which I love, don't get me wrong), it's refreshing to have space between tables and room to breathe. It's well-appointed, almost making you feel like you're in a really cool barn (I mean this in the best way). Party space that you can rent out is well-hidden in the back. The bar area is also large but so inviting. I hear it's lively on Friday and Saturday nights. We were there on a Sunday afternoon, just after brunch at around 3, so there was plenty of seating available and it was pretty chill although not empty. If you are vegan or GF ask for the separate menu! They really should note it on the regular menu because if you have such restrictions, at first glance you'll think there's nothing here for you. Last time I had the vegan ravioli and meatballs and as much I recall having liked it, I knew I wanted to try something new, so I had the protein-rich sauteed "chicken" served over a bed of quinoa. I know this sounds basic but it's anything but. The chicken cutlets are succulent and delicious (I believe Gardein, but they season and prepare them to perfection) and the quinoa has a rich tomato sauce, as well as artichokes and mushrooms making it utterly delicious. Meaning, I ate the entire thing. There was no avoiding that. It didn't even need salt or any other seasoning. My father is still talking about the Margarita pizza he had, so I know we'll be returning next time I'm in town. My brother and sister-in-law also loved their food. Happiness all-around. Even the iced tea is good (I tried my father's sweetened iced tea and I don't even like iced tea but this is more like an Arnold Palmer!) Have to mention the bathroom area as there are all down a corridor with a small room for each toilet area. Comfortable and private. Overall a great place to dine and socialize.
