Gorgeous. Spacious. Serene. We had a group of about 40 for a weekend of primitive camping. We were in campsite 6 which is almost at the end of the peninsula into Lake Thurmond (Clarks Hill Lake). There was a porta-potty at our site and several power hookups. There was an actual bath house nearby with toilets and showers (up at areas 4 and 7), but it was not really within walking distance. Due to the layout, driving to the different areas of the island was also easy and convenient. All of the camping areas are pretty wooded, but the ground was cleared out well at the designated spots. There were also light poles placed about so it was never pitch black at night. It was however dark enough to see the moonlight and stars in the sky which was very nice, but that may have also been due to all the tree cover. There are quite a few picnic tables scattered about the entire resort, and as I understand it, at certain times of the year during the day, civilians can get a "day pass" for family picnics and gatherings. There are also several large pavilions available. To stay overnight or host a campout, a military person must be able to reserve and vouch for the party. We were there during the off-season, so there was not much activity or noise, but I can imagine it would be quite different in the summer. There is a marina, obstacle course, children's play area. Something for everyone. The layout is very accommodating for various lifestyles. If you're very active, there is an area for that. If you are just wanting to chill, there is an area for that. If you just want to go out fishing, there is an area for that. Get the picture? If you have your own gear, bring it. If you don't rent it. They rent everything! RVs, camping equipment, cabins, kayaks. You name it! There is even a little store if you forgot something. The entire resort was very clean and well maintained. The ranger came out and checked on things, but was not intrusive. Trash was also collected daily. If you live near Fort Gordon or Augusta, you should make this at least a day trip several times a year. If not, you should plan a trip for a few days as a destination location. It will not let you down.

Lake Greenwood State Park - Beautiful, clean lake that our dogs loved.

We have camped here twice, once in the fall and this time in late March. Both were unique in their own way with the fall trip taking the cake. On both trips the morning sun greeted us ablaze with colors only to be rivaled by its sunset as the long day closed upon us. Beautiful. Serene. The camping reservations are easy through the SC website and the prices very reasonable. Most sites have a view of the lake and several are right on it. We did notice this time (spring) that several locals booked their family vacation here during spring break. Sadly, several lugged all their crap from home with them: refrigerators, large grills, full-size kitchen ovens, awnings, boats, golf carts, bikes, dogs, and kids. The center of the campground looked like a hillbilly hoedown. People were kind and respectful, but damn, it's camping people! Overall, we like it here and we will return. Got the campfire just a smokin' on my "Give 'em a whirl" meter. Camp here (just leave your sh*t at home).

No one else was around and the breeze coming off the water was refreshing and cooling. The bottom of the lake was mostly sand. It was clean, quiet and the boys had a blast! Perfect stop in a great place!

Dear Friends, I'm a…read morelover of staycations for many reasons. The most important is a change of scenery and a place close to home is necessary to review and renew. Let's face it, life can be super busy and having a moment to press pause, reflect, and rejuvenate is key. I spent three days an two nights at this site and it fantastic. The room is so well decorated and filled with the amenities of home. It trucks the brain and you forget that you're literally sleeping in a large tent. The tent is equipped with a real bed with all the things we love including a very comfortable mattresses. The tent also has chairs, a refrigerator, coffee maker, and an a/c and heating unit. My favorite part of the site is the restrooms and shower building. I was pleasantly surprised at how clean it is kept. While I was there, I was greeted by the Timberline staff several times cleaning the restrooms. Group Suggestions: I'd suggest booking a few of the tents and having a nice family reunion. I'd also bring bikes and fishing equipment. There is a dock next to the site and I'm sure it's a great place to fish. Since my stay, they now have someone who offers golf cart rentals. That would be great to use to go play disc golf or go to one of the beaches there. Solo Suggestions: This is a solo travelers dream because they offer a place to renew. I spent my days just watching nature, journaling, and reading. Please share your story, reel or photos with me when you venture out to @timberline glamping in Appling, GA. Wishing you much fun! After walking around and scouting out other spots, could not really rule out any spot that I couldn't get in. The only thing bad about camping is the other people. No consideration for others wanting to take advantage of a relaxing weekend. Packing up and pulling out between 4:30-6:00am is beyond me. Anyways. Good place. Bath houses are okay, just bring your shower shoes. Bring your own fire wood too
