4.4 stars Point…read moreReyes Nat'l Seashore is beautiful, there is no denying that. It was incorparted into the National Park System in 1962. It's cultural history spans 5,000 years to the Coast Miwok Indians and the park itself has 120 known Miwok village sites. Historians believe that Francis Drake was the first European to have landed in the area in 1579. And in the early 1800s, Mexican land grants led to the establishment of ranches where the dairy and cheese became highly sought after. Finally, in 1870, the Point Reyes Lighthouse was built and was in operation for 105 years. A fairly recent controversy happened in 2022 when some environmentalist groups sued the park for continuing to lease land to cattle ranchers, claiming it was disrupting the protected lands native species as well as changing the landscape. In 2026, 12 out of the 14 ranches are expected to vacate Point Reyes Nat'l Seashore as part of the settlement. My experience here has been positive. The drive in is gorgeous and the views near the lighthouse is jaw-dropping - tall grass, blooming flowers, happy cows, and largely untouched land. However, it gets windy as I drove closer to the lighthouse parking area. The winds blew harder walking towards it. The visitor's center is small and is a welcome shelter from the wind. They sell stickers, chocolates, and magnets here. The walk down the stairs to the lighthouse feels steep and scary. There are wood platforms that allow for rest and photos, but even those feel flimsy against the might of the wind. Once I got to the lighthouse, the views were just ok and it was just too crowded. The walk up the 313 steps was painful lol. There is limited parking and, if it gets too crowded, the park rangers will turn people away a couple miles before reaching the top. There are vaulted toilets (no sink) in the parking lot and regular flush toilets closer to visitor's center, but they both have long lines...I waited about 15 minutes, but the lines do get longer. The trails around the area are not dog-friendly, but I do see service dogs. The only dog-friendly areas are Drake beach, which have various entrances since it's so big. But, no matter what, beware of the deer ticks. They are everywhere and will bite humans or dogs.

If you have the time and money, you can B&B it in style at Osprey Peak and enjoy oysters and wine at Saltwater in Inverness while hiking during the day. But there's more to Point Reyes than meets the eye. There's also the wilderness. The wilderness? The Phillip Burton Wilderness, actually. And wilderness areas are special - the most protected areas within the National Parks and National Forests in the US with the strictest rules regarding land use and recreation. You traverse the wilderness area on many hikes, but there are only 4 places (and about 50 sites) where you can overnight. Of the four, Glen Camp is to my mind the most secluded and therefore also the most "wildernessy" of the bunch. Wildcat and Coast camps are beach sites, extremely pretty but very popular and rather unprotected from the elements. Sky is closest to the road and the Bear Valley visitor center, which makes it good for folks w/ kids or tons of gear. It has sheltering trees but isn't as deep into the woods as Glen and further away from some of the scenic wonders: the lakes and Alamere falls and wildflower-covered ridges. And of the sites in Glen Camp, 005 and 006 are the most secluded, located up a hillside and under gorgeous tree canopies. Importantly, the toilets and water pump are out of sight up here, so you'll feel more in the woods than on the flat (and dusty) section below. We've been talking about trying out some kayaks on the Petaluma river for a while and we finally…read moredecided to do it. What a great experience! With six of us (including three kids and a dog), we needed two tandem and two single kayaks. The guys at Petaluma Paddle were great. On the phone, Drew helped me figure out what we needed - at the river, Chad was super helpful and got us going quickly. We were in our way. About 40 minutes later we made it to the turning basin where we docked and then walked into town for lunch. The timing was perfect, left at around noon as the tide took us up the river and on the way back the Petaluma wind was at our back. Glad we finally made it out, was great to see Petaluma from the river. Will definitely be back!!

We decided it was going to be Paddle Boarding. I called Petaluma Stand Up Paddle earlier in the week to get the low down. Jessica filled me in on how things operate. Today, I got the pleasure of meeting Jessica and Drew the owner. They got us all set up and have us a tutorial for us newbs. We rented our boards for $20/hr Or $65/day. They offer downwind paddles and other guided tours in their 2 other locations. Paddle Boarding seemed very novice. Anyone can do it. And you should do it especially if you're looking for a good core and upper body workout. You can paddle into Petaluma and have some lunch and paddle back. We did paddle twards town but never made it all the way. I think they said it was about a mile ? Along our paddle, we saw Blue Herons and Egrets hunting for their lunch. We watched as they caught and ate the fish. While we paddled, a parade of ducks joined us in the paddle. There were so many birds everywhere. We also saw jellyfish in the river. That was unexpected and neat to see. On the way back, the Smart train passed right in front of us. The passengers on the train waved as we waived back. This was my…read moreHusbands first Half so instead of Running my usual pace of just over 90 minutes I paced him. ++ Possitives ++ + Tech T-Shirt, Cinch bag and Finishers medal for everyone. + Good amount of Aid stations stocked with Water, Gatorade, Oranges and Power Gels. + Great group of volunteers at 2.5mi and 10.5mi markers (same guys).They seemed quite entertained by my singing to my Husband and skipping as we passed them at mile 10.5. Glad I made their long wait out in the cold a little more interesting. + Easy packet pick up on the day (if you got there early!). We got there 20 minutes into the 1hr pickup time slot and the line was only about 20 people deep which then grew to 60+. I heard a lot of people complaining they would not get to the start line in time. Here's a tip - If you're doing a Half Marathon get there at least 60 minutes before the start. + Groupon deal for entry ($69 plus fees). I would have been pissed if I paid full price though. -- Negatives -- - Wasn't a full Half Marathon. Measured by both my Garmin and my Husbands Nike App. Had I been in my ''Serious Runner'' mode this would have pissed me off immensely. We did notice that Volunteers were moving markers during the event.. Hmm.. - Disorganized course. It wasn't completely clear where you were supposed to Run, we had Runners coming at us head on and sideways, Volunteers standing in the middle of the pathway and we were even running with the 10k people at one point. Big mess! - They also had us run through a Dog park which was really weird and awkward. It was packed with people and Dogs darting about all over the course, add into the factor that after being attacked by a large Dog I'm pretty scared of them. My Husband lightened this by stating ''WTF, we have to run through Dog shit? If I wanted to do a shit / mud run I would have signed up for one''. Lol. - Post Run food consisted of a small Costco sized tub of Red Vines, some Popcorn and a few left over dry Bagels by the time my Husband and I got there. Considering the event time was stated as 7am -12:30pm you would have thought they would have food stocked until then but no. (we finished in under 3hrs btw!) I am so glad the vendors were nice enough to give me some drinks before we started. - No water at the finishing line. What?! - $10 Parking fee we wasn't told about. Luckily I carry cash at all times. - The same medals for all distances. Come on now, I think if you're running 10 miles more than someone else it's only fair you get a different medal. A half Marathon is a big deal ya'know... As this was this events first year I understand some things won't go completely to plan but the events director isn't completely inexperienced in planning these events, it's important to be prepared for things to go a little screwy. I got an email with a long list of all of the ''hicups'' they encountered including not having enough T-Shirts for all of the Runners. For real? The intent is to make this an annual event which at this point in time I don't know if I will do it again.

So grateful to be sharing this review!…read more If you've been considering booking a Hot Air Balloon experience... Do it!! My husband surprised me with this epic experience for our anniversary. And from start to finish is was dope! King mentioned the booking process & communication prior to arrival were seamless. We arrived at 5:25am to a secure parking lot. Check in was smooth and they distribute the large group info smaller ones based on weight. We were offered complementary snacks and coffee and although we declined it was a nice touch. Be sure to note that anything that does not fit inside your pocket is not permitted onboard the balloon. It was extremely foggy (early August) so we unfortunately had to be transported to another take off site due to weather about 50 mins away. They do make it very clear that there are different take off locations and the Sonoma one may not be an option if weather is not permitting. When we arrived they were inflating the balloons which was pretty cool to watch. Take off was smoother than I anticipated. The views from the sky were remarkable and being in the air has a level of freedom not atinable by another aircraft. Landing was ok, and we were all instructed to brace ourselves by bending knees & leaning back in basket. The custom Sonoma Ballooning champagne toast was the cherry on top. Huge shout-out to our pilot Balloonist Mateo for having great energy and keeping us informed.

Overall, I'd give Sonoma Balloon a solid experience, but probably not one I'd book again…read more The booking process was easy, communication was clear, and everyone we interacted with was incredibly friendly. The ground crew and pilots were professional, welcoming, and made everyone feel comfortable. The balloon itself was beautiful, and the flight was very smooth and peaceful. My biggest disappointment was that the experience wasn't quite what I expected. You're instructed to arrive at one location, only to be told you'll be shuttled about 15 minutes to another launch site, but we ended up driving another 45 to 50 minutes to Winters before even getting in the balloon. The flight itself was around 40 minutes, but instead of floating over Sonoma's vineyards, we spent the majority of the time over farmland. After landing, there was another 45 to 50 minute shuttle ride back. At the end of the flight, they offer a champagne toast, which is a nice touch, but it felt a little unorganized. Everyone was standing around waiting for the pilot to pour champagne rather than it feeling like a celebratory ending to the experience. None of this takes away from how kind the staff were or how enjoyable the actual balloon ride was. If you're looking simply to experience hot air ballooning, you'll likely have a great time. If you're specifically hoping to soar over Sonoma's famous vineyards, I'd recommend asking detailed questions about the launch location and typical flight path before booking. It was a fun experience, and I'm glad I did it once. For me, though, it isn't something I'd book again.
