Pretty cozy neighborhood coffee spot. This would be a great place to work from. They place solid music at the perfect volume, not too loud but just right for working conditions. I stopped into Poetica Coffee for a cup of Joe to go but I really wish I could've stayed. The atmosphere of this cute little place, is so clean and cool and airy. There was a phenomenal mix of Neo Soul and R&B playing. My regular coffee with espresso add-in was tasty. If I have another appointment in that area, I'm gonna arrive early and stay awhile. I'll be honest: the first time I tried this place, I wasn't a huge fan. I went with the intention of working from the coffee shop. The place has a decent amount of seating with a variety of different chair and couch options. I found a spot near an outlet, ordered a coffee, set up my workspace, and then learned the WiFi wasn't working. I was bummed, but it wasn't anyone's fault. Unfortunately, I went to pick up my coffee and the barista was not very pleasant. In conclusion: not a great experience. I decided to give this place another shot, and I'm so glad I did! The coffee was tasty, the barista was very sweet, and I noticed they had a free book exchange (extra brownie points!!). Both times I have visited here, it was because I came from a facial and I needed a place with wifi. And it delivered. I didn't know this was a small chain and this is the only location I have been. They have indoor seating and outdoor. They have a sharing library so you can exchange books for free. If you go to local cafes for drinks you won't get anywhere else, their claim to fame is the Poetica which has vanilla, brown sugar in hot and iced. I had it iced and it is a nice level of sweetness. They also have seasonal specials to look out for. I went on Wednesday my second go around and I didn't know this before but they offer 50% pastries on Wednesdays. So I enjoyed a croissant for the table and ordered macarons to go (which they had in various flavors like white chocolate, cheesecake, pistachio and seasonal variations like pumpkin spice and gingerbread). The vibes are comfy. Not like a loved worn couch but definitely not sterile. Especially with the art on the wall. The WiFi was good and the person who made my coffee was polite and let me know things to enjoy my time. Overall I would come back for a third and fourth time. read more

I'm going to be 100% honest. I needed to pee. But I know Poetica because they have another location on Atlantic by where I live. I stopped in, and got a cold brew and a tomato/cheese croissant. Both really hit the spot after a long day walking in the sun. Using the bathroom also hit some kind of spot. Staff was friendly. Space is super chill. Lot of people on laptops with indie music on the speakers. read more

This used to be Velvette Brew and it's basically the same place, just owned and operated by the Poetica folks. Same excellent espresso drinks, teas including a smooth matcha, non dairy milk options, and various other drinks. The food is amazing, as long as you can eat wheat, dairy and eggs. I recommend the vegetarian quiches (it takes a while to reheat them but it's worth the wait), and what they call pierogi which I would call perashki(pirozhki), ie the street pies not the boiled dumplings. Sometimes they have Uzbek sweets, and they also have croissants, danishes, etc. This is definitely a place where people camp out with laptops to work on their projects. There's also a beautiful courtyard in the back. Excellent friendly service and reasonable prices. read more

WOW what a wonderful place! No wonder I would see so many people going into this shop in the mornings. The croissants are ridiculously good! I am obsessed with the egg and cheese croissant now. The coffee is great and the employees are very nice. All I would ask is to *please* keep the music down. In this age of remote work, everyone in the coffee shop is hunkered down on their laptops to focus peacefully. Whenever I try to work here there is R&B music absolutely cranked to where I feel like I'm in a nightclub and have to leave. Beyond that, great place! read more

Sure! Why not! Clean and friendly spot :) Got a hot chamomile tea and they actually use while flowers in their teabags. It makes for a very flavorful cup of tea and I appreciated. I saw that they had outdoor seating-- so will be back to check out their menu and chill. read more

Absolutely horrible experience today at the Smith St Poetica in Carrol Gardens. My husband went to get me a decaf latte (no sweetener) after our prenatal appointment today and the barista mistook the order. Husband kindly asked for the correct drink and the barista was so annoyed that he messed up the order again. Usually I would just take whichever drink and shake it off, but we realized that he had again made the drink with sweetener and (I suspected) caffeine. Because of my conditions this pregnancy I'm not able to have sweetener nor fully caffeinated drinks, and I tried to explain that to the barista when I went back in. I felt bad that we had to ask for a correction again but I also could not drink what had been given to me (and that we had paid for) which seemed wrong. The guy confirmed he had made my drink sweetened and caffeinated as I suspected and was an absolute DICK when we asked again for the correct drink. He was extremely rude and said some pointedly aggressive things to us, including blaming us for the incorrect drink orders. Listen, in any other situation I would think, "maybe it was us who requested the wrong drink" but considering how careful we have to be about this while I'm pregnant, I'm certain that both times we correctly asked for what we wanted. As a former barista myself, I was in absolute shock by the customer service. Even on a bad day I would never have treated a customer like that. Not to mention... it's a particular kind of asshole who talks to a pregnant lady the way this guy did. We will not be coming back, obviously. And to the barista who was working this afternoon and treated us that way: I hope you're proud of yourself! read more

I live across the street at 566 Lorimer St. and usually get my coffee from Bagelsmith., In a rush one day, and faced with a line around the block at my usually spot, I went instead for a the awning that reads Coffeeeeeee...(?) across the street... The actual name is Poetica, i learned from the Barista serving me. Whoever owns this, The Awning should read Poetica coffee cause I didn't find coffeeeee anywhere online. When I first started coming here the baked good items were well and did okay for my tasting. But once they went under remodeling is when I noticed the staff and items were not the same anymore. I find all there baked items to not taste fresh or even hot. They do not offer the items to be warmed up. I haven't had their coffee but I'm guessing it's better then the baked goods. The staff here isn't the nicest, wants to make everything short and fast with no line behind me. After today I will not try to make this my spot to go too for a quick grab. read more

Poetica totally saved me with a great cortado last week before I had to do a long nighttime drive! The plain and chocolate croissants were both delicious, and surprisingly light--perfect snacks with coffee. Let's try to keep our local cafes going through the pandemic, folks :) P.S. I think they are open later than their posted hours; I went around 5:30pm and the door said they close at 6pm. read more

Really incredible coffee. They opened up another location in Williamsburg and it's adorable and comfortable. Nice vibe with art on walls, plants, lots of sunlight, fresh baked goods, etc. Good quiet place to read or do work! The red head barista at Williamsburg location was very attentive and welcoming. I came here on a Saturday where it was supposed to be open till 5pm. When I got in and ordered they didnt mention anything about the updated closing time. They kicked out all customers exactly at 3.30pm. Everyone were clueless. I would've gone elsewhere had they just given a head ups. It's not great when you charge me over $10 for a small cup of coffee and then kick me out 1.5hrs before closing time on a chilly day.

I ordered a single burger and a Sudan spiced peanut butter latte, for ~$15! That's pretty inexpensive for New York City. I note this as some consider it overpriced. I suppose the food is fairly inexpensive, the lattes slightly higher than average. The "burger" comes wrapped in a homemade pita with diced cucumber, onion, and tomato, plus a few crispy, thick-cut fries and a yummy house sauce. It was a cool twist of the traditional burger and had a nice flavor. The sauce was like a slightly Mediterranean version of Big Mac sauce. The girl working as the barista and cashier was very nice and friendly. She had a nice presence and warm smile, made suggestions, and even gave a stranger free utensils when they popped on to ask. I think it's definitely worth checking out, and it's a good place for a cheap & simple meal that's still quirky and fun.

Perhaps I should have anticipated that, or my mistake in ordering. I also ordered a Moroccan egg salad sandwich which was substantive but surprisingly bland--sparse with the advertised capers and pickled red onions to give it more punch. I've always loved the look of the spot and the vibe--funky decor, outside and indoor facing counters to order, with some outdoor seating for people watching on Dekalb or heading nearby Ft. Greene Park. I see they are renovating and rebranding a bit and adding some burger component. While I didn't love it, I'd definitely give it another shot.
