Shenandoah River State Park - Red Tail Ridge Trail view

Shenandoah River State Park

Often times, the national parks get the best territory and the states get leftovers. However, the…read moreShenandoah River State Park, down the mountain from well known Skyline Drive and its accompanying federal parkland, is by no means inferior. A rural drive leads to a visitor center, trails, an overlook, river access, and campgrounds. I had time for only a brief visit, but the views were majestic. It would be an excellent place to return for a hike. As with most of Virginia's state parks, there is a modest entrance fee, but I'm sure it's well worth it.

I travel and stay at a lot of parks during the course of the year, and I have only repeated a few…read moreof them. This location is incredible, rich with things to do, views to see, and adventures to have with enough time. The cabins are gorgeous, fair warning that there is no television, but honestly who cares?! I had great phone signal which almost never happens on these excursions, and I loved making a fire in my fireplace and sitting on the porch with coffee for sunrise, which I could see from Cabin 11. This cabin also was at the end and felt private, even though I could see my neighbors (who had set up Christmas lights! How fun!) There's also a wonderful hiking trail right by these cabins, 10 and 11, the Red Tail Ridge, that was semi-short (2.5 miles or so if desired to create a loop with Big Oak) and had views of the river and Shenandoah valley below!

So we started looking around, and ended up calling Pam way after hours. She was accommodating and had no problem with us showing up late without a reservation. This was late in the season, so we had the entire campground to ourselves. And it was beautiful. There is a bathroom on site, it's clean and well maintained. Pam also lives on the property. If you end up reserving a spot here - pick site 22 as it sits on the far side of the property and is somewhat more secluded.

First, yes, the "office" is a little hippie place full of all sorts of stuff. To me, that is oddly cute. I don't know, I was always a sucker for antiques. Pam is AWESOME! Super sweet old lady who really is just chill and fun. Second, place is VERY close to a highway. As a matter of fact part of the campground is almost under a bridge and cars keep buzzing and sound gets carried throughout the entire campground. This is the main reason I'm giving it 3 stars. We looked to escape the sound of the city, and I understand some people won't mind that part. Third, we had tons of privacy. We stayed at site 22 and it was the most secluded spot, which is weird considering it is on the road to the next lots over. If there wasn't the bridge and highway part, I'd give it a definite 5 stars. The creek was a little dry, but still gorgeous. Bathrooms are ok, but could definitely be improved. There was no soap nor paper towels, so definitely make sure you have those with you. We had a wild experience Friday night with some kids not being able to control their state of toxicity, but that's not the owner's fault. You never know with college kids what they'll surprise you with. If you can get past noise of cars, this place is actually not bad at all for the price. There's always Shenandoah river you can even walk to, awesome swimming hole for summer parties, and phone still had signal (which meh, I couldn't care less about). Town is very close, so if you forgot something you can always buy.

You can see everyone and everything going on around you even though there are short fences between some sites. In fact, 2 camping neighbors kept coming into our site to get branches off the ground for firewood; very annoying. The bathrooms have a shower and toilet but no shelving to put your things, although there are two hooks to hang items. It's very dank and the faucets leak. Everything needs updating. They remind me of stalls to wash animals. I wouldn't advise going barefoot in the bathroom or shower.

The taunting, intimidation with K9 force, threatened entrapment and arrest was enough to NEVER come back!!! 11mins past "quiet" hour (10PM) a demand, from unidentified individuals holding the reins of a German Shepard, to turn the music off came from the dark. Which warranted a simple response from the family being asked "I'll turn it down, but not off." Two minutes later, the individuals identify themselves as the owners while on the phone with the Sheriffs department requesting they escort this family off premise. All knowing the compromising position that would put this family in. I question the integrity of any small business owners who put their patrons in immediate danger as they did that evening Our incident was unwarranted and unprofessional! If all rules were enforced in the manner that was exemplified that night, NO ONE would be allowed on premise. I'll list the few rules breached during our stay; rowdy group loud until 3am, dogs off leash, generators being used, underage drinking & lastly underage children working... I would HIGHLY recommend you stay elsewhere, for the safety of you, your family & friends!

This place is rundown and all sites are unbelievably un-level. The person in charge of contractor…read morespaces is so unprofessional. She drives around all day smoking cigarette after cigarette and rents you a space from her car (which I guess is the office). There seems to be no rules regarding what junk you can pile outside your RV. The rent here is $750 monthly plus electric. This place charges double what other parks in the vicinity charge for electricity. When it rains you have flood water running down the middle of the road. If you are planning to stay in the short term contractor spots be prepared to have a lot of base material to level your RV. Spaces are very tight and unkempt. First RV Resort I've ever known that requires their tenants to mow and/or weedeat their spaces. Also you basically sit on an ant hill here so be prepared to deal with ants. If you are lucky enough to get a picnic bench at your site it is most likely in pitiful condition. Rusty nails sticking out and barely standing. The employees that man the guard shack are very nice and the maintenance department are very nice respectful people. Watch out for Jeri (manager of short term contractor sites) she is toxic and completely unprofessional.

This is NOT a resort, it's more like a run down trailer park with a ton of stored campers.
