Elizabeth Furnace Recreation Area

Elizabeth Furnace is a hidden gem. It is near to Shenandoah, but most people don't even know this…read moreplace exists. This is partially due to it being in George Washington National Forest. The National Forests are a little bit different than the National Parks. They are a bit more loosey goosey as far as visiting is concerned, much more hands off than the NPS. So, Elizabeth Furnace as far as camping goes, is first come, first served. Coming down to VA from NY for the Fourth of July weekend, we decided that we weren't going to be able to actually camp there. That FCFS style is what keeps me from giving it 5 stars. So I have actually been hiking here for years before I moved to NY, so I'm pretty familiar with this area. The Rec area has a number of trailheads and lots, the main one being in between the group camping and regular camping. There's a trail that connects over to the camping area. The large parking area is closed off during the winter with a gate over the bridge, but there is still parking here. There aren't a ton of amenities, this being the National Forest. There's some pit toilets at the main rec area, there are shower facilities at the campground, as well as some potable water. The thing that really is great about this place is the number and variety of trails that are accessible from this area. There is the Pig Iron trail, which is a nice easy trail that takes you around the furnace that gives you some history of the area and the furnace with a number of plaques. There is the Tuscarora Trail, which is a 406km spur of the Appalachian Trail, which runs right through the rec area, giving you access to both Buzzard Rock and Signal Knob from here. It's rough and tumble, but it's also one of my favorite places.

Great family campground that is a first come, first serve location in the Shanandoah Valley. We…read morelucked out by getting a site on the river with a small waterfall behind our tent. We stayed for a week and although there were several small kids, noise level was minimal during the day and nonexistent after 9 pm. The camp host worked endlessly to keep the grounds free of trash/leaves on the main roadways and walking paths. There was a sheriff's vehicle that drove through periodically which was an added security. There are a variety of walking trails from easy to more advanced adventures. Sites are $10 off season and $20 for in season. They do have bath houses open for in season campers and several bathrooms that are well kept all year long.

Tubing Review: We had an amazing time. Was is exhausting,…read moreyes. Worth it, yes! Owen was great. He was a great driving the stick shift bus back to the outfitters. It was nice being dropped off and picked up. We did have issues with our card online, but when I called in to book, Nancy was helpful. She got us all situated and sent an email to confirm. We filled out waivers online which was a breeze. We watched a quick safety video, picked up our lifevest and were on our way. The water was the perfect temp, and it was clear. Tips: bring snacks and water. You are out there 4-5 or longer hours. Especially if the water is low, which ours was. We used a waterproof bag and had no issues. We used a tube with a cup holder which was nice. I wore my life vest out of precaution even though I can swim, plus it made it comfortable for my to use it as a neck rest. I've noticed people mention in previous reviews that the bus was dirty ect. Um, you're in the woods. If you get picked up after many other groups the bus will be dirty as everyone is wet coming out of the water no matter what activity you choose. I would not own a brand spanking new vehicle for this type of environment and job. Used is best and saves money I'm sure. Wear a hat and sunglasses, put in that sunscreen. Bring a waterproof phone case/bag. You will have no service out there so put it on airplane mode and use it as a camera.

Fun experience for floating down the river! Great service, chill vibes, great staff... I'd go back!read more
