Campsite 21 with our tent setup.
Lisa D.

The best way to put this is ...if you're looking for a commercialized, camper/trailer-preferred campground, this is NOT going to be it. This campground is best suited for tent camping and is not suited for people looking for a commercially run site. While the owner of this campground DOES come across as "eccentric," I found her to be a very nice lady. Sit and talk to her a while...hear her stories. She's got a lot of them. Yes, the area around her home is definitely cluttered, but the campsites and grounds themselves are beautiful. Sites 18-22 are the best ones to get as they are far away from the road and a bit more secluded. Campsite 22 provides the most privacy. If you take campsite 20 or 21, you will need to bring a canopy for shade. Sites 18 and 19 are well-shaded. I was actually quite impressed that an 80-something year old lady could maintain this place as she has. To the best of my knowledge, she maintains the grounds BY HERSELF, which astounds me because the whole grounds flood badly at least once a year. She'll tell you of times when the entire camp store was under water! Yet it is still up and running. The photos on the website do not do this place justice. The rock formations and mosses are beautiful. The river itself is gorgeous...except for after it rains when it is rushing madly by! Each tent site is equipped with a firepit (rocks formed into a pit), a trashcan, and a picnic table. There are bathrooms with flush toilets and showers. It's not luxary, but it's better than SOME places I've seen! Wood is expensive ($10 per "bunch" and a bunch is not really defined), so I recommend bringing your own wood if possible.

My partner and I were looking for a quiet two night getaway. To our surprise we definitely found it. We were the only campers the first day/night. It was so quiet. However the entrance is scary and run down. The owner is a "character" and maintains the grounds herself. Fire wood is $10 so bring your own if you do not want to pay. Her area (the office and her house) is very cluttered. We stayed at site 16 on the creek which was leveled for our tent, and large. Not a lot of shade, but it did have a water and electric hook up. There is an outhouse nearby. I didn't use it. It is a little bit of a stroll to the bath house. The worst part about this place is the bath house. It is not clean, there was residue (hair and fluids) from previous campers. Paper towels and soap is not provided so make sure to bring your own when you venture to the bath house. There are two facilities each for men and women. If the bathrooms were in better condition I would have given it a higher score. There is a place to wash your dishes which is great, and even a library to borrow and/or keep books the owner provides. There is a swimming hole, unfortunately the water was too low so we were unable to take a dip. You have to walk past some unlabeled camp sites then walk a short way through the forest on a path to reach it. There is lots to do in the area. So rent a canoe, kayak or tube and enjoy a day on the river! If you can get past the dirty bathrooms then definitely try it out. It is primitive, definitely not for RV people.

Simple and the amount of noise you and 8-10 of your finest group produces is not a concern. Despite the continual sound of traffic running parallel to the camp ground, day-time tubing is a nice beginning of the day.... And the previously constructed circular fire easily assists a 18-24" griddle (not included in camp-site) for all your cooking/food needs... Enjoy!

Total clutter.

Pam is wonderful - she's personable and accommodated us when we called ahead for a spot the day before we needed it.

However, the…read moreShenandoah River State Park, down the mountain from well known Skyline Drive and its accompanying federal parkland, is by no means inferior. A rural drive leads to a visitor center, trails, an overlook, river access, and campgrounds. I had time for only a brief visit, but the views were majestic. It would be an excellent place to return for a hike. As with most of Virginia's state parks, there is a modest entrance fee, but I'm sure it's well worth it.

This location is incredible, rich with things to do, views to see, and adventures to have with enough time. The cabins are gorgeous, fair warning that there is no television, but honestly who cares?! I had great phone signal which almost never happens on these excursions, and I loved making a fire in my fireplace and sitting on the porch with coffee for sunrise, which I could see from Cabin 11. This cabin also was at the end and felt private, even though I could see my neighbors (who had set up Christmas lights! How fun!) There's also a wonderful hiking trail right by these cabins, 10 and 11, the Red Tail Ridge, that was semi-short (2.5 miles or so if desired to create a loop with Big Oak) and had views of the river and Shenandoah valley below!

You can see everyone and everything going on around you even though there are short fences between some sites. In fact, 2 camping neighbors kept coming into our site to get branches off the ground for firewood; very annoying. The bathrooms have a shower and toilet but no shelving to put your things, although there are two hooks to hang items. It's very dank and the faucets leak. Everything needs updating. They remind me of stalls to wash animals. I wouldn't advise going barefoot in the bathroom or shower.

The taunting, intimidation with K9 force, threatened entrapment and arrest was enough to NEVER come back!!! 11mins past "quiet" hour (10PM) a demand, from unidentified individuals holding the reins of a German Shepard, to turn the music off came from the dark. Which warranted a simple response from the family being asked "I'll turn it down, but not off." Two minutes later, the individuals identify themselves as the owners while on the phone with the Sheriffs department requesting they escort this family off premise. All knowing the compromising position that would put this family in. I question the integrity of any small business owners who put their patrons in immediate danger as they did that evening Our incident was unwarranted and unprofessional! If all rules were enforced in the manner that was exemplified that night, NO ONE would be allowed on premise. I'll list the few rules breached during our stay; rowdy group loud until 3am, dogs off leash, generators being used, underage drinking & lastly underage children working... I would HIGHLY recommend you stay elsewhere, for the safety of you, your family & friends!

She drives around all day smoking cigarette after cigarette and rents you a space from her car (which I guess is the office). There seems to be no rules regarding what junk you can pile outside your RV. The rent here is $750 monthly plus electric. This place charges double what other parks in the vicinity charge for electricity. When it rains you have flood water running down the middle of the road. If you are planning to stay in the short term contractor spots be prepared to have a lot of base material to level your RV. Spaces are very tight and unkempt. First RV Resort I've ever known that requires their tenants to mow and/or weedeat their spaces. Also you basically sit on an ant hill here so be prepared to deal with ants. If you are lucky enough to get a picnic bench at your site it is most likely in pitiful condition. Rusty nails sticking out and barely standing. The employees that man the guard shack are very nice and the maintenance department are very nice respectful people. Watch out for Jeri (manager of short term contractor sites) she is toxic and completely unprofessional.

This is NOT a resort, it's more like a run down trailer park with a ton of stored campers.
