The patio and view from our premium campsite.

This is probably the nicest, best maintained KOA we've booked. The sites are large, the scenery beautiful. Easy access to Shenandoah Natl Park and the town of Luray. The dog park is awesome! Why 4 stars? Three negatives. 1. When the wind died down the overwhelming smell of cow manure/urine was unbearable. Not unpleasant, unbearable. You couldn't be outside or open windows inside. 2. The wifi was unusable, even after most of the guests left we could not get a usable connection. 3. Two of the four washers were out of order when we were there. This was a relatively minor inconvenience but nevertheless affects the rating. It was hot but the pool does not open until May 21. I wish they had sped that up to give some respite from the heat. As much as I really loved the sites and grounds I probably won't return because of the manure.

Hey cows, why you so majestic?

I camped here for two nights at one of the tent sites and had a blast. The tent sites are right next to a big, fenced-in farm with chickens, llamas, cows and sheep. I took a ton of photos and enjoyed seeing the animals grazing next to our campsite. The campsite included a gravel pad for the tent, a fire pit, a picnic table with a canopy over it for shade, an electrical outlet and a bright lamp on the canopy for nighttime. You can buy firewood at the camp store for $5, but bring plenty of fire starter materials, because the grounds are so meticulously kept that I couldn't find any stray sticks around to use for kindling. The amenities included a nice-sized pool and very clean bathrooms with showers. When I used the shower, there were toiletries in there; I am not sure if these were provided by the KOA or if I just used someone else's stuff... ;) This campground was a beautiful place to spend our weekend. We were very close to all of the attractions we wanted to see, such as the Luray Caverns, Luray Zoo and Mimslyn Inn. The staff are very friendly as well, I highly recommend staying here if you are into site camping or RVing.

Our site was large, shaded and best of all level. No leveling blocks needed. Sites are gravel, clean and well maintained. The staff is incredibly friendly and helpful! Well stocked store, and they will make and deliver pizza right to your campsite. Typical KOA amenities, and they have a stocked catch and release pond on site for those who love to fish. Lots of activities for the kiddos, too. The road in is a little hilly and several curves, but big rigs shouldn't have any trouble navigating it - the signage on the road is great (funny sign on the road that said "1/2 miles Don't Give Up." Lol). We're more "state park people" in that we enjoy the space and solitude and we don't have kids traveling with us (just dogs), so we don't typically need all the on-site activities. But this week we needed full hook ups, and this park gave us that feel. With so much to do in the area, we didn't get to it all, so we'll be back and we'll definitely stay here again.

It is better to get there by day. It is off the road a bit. You have to park at a stop sign and…read morewalk up a hill to reach the office to check in. The dog park is very small. Lots of larger gravel. The only lighting after dark they had was some that came on as I walked by them attached to trees. We were surrounded by forest so it was kind of scary being out there at 9 in the pitch black. There are lots of weeds that give the dogs briars in their feet. They have a trail you can go on that was nice but after 20mins my dog was ready to turn around. I never found out where that would have taken me lol. That was really the safest bet for walking him. There is many large rocks there. There isn't much grass. The pond is tiny.

Photo Credits: Photography by 3Spade7Star…read more Five River Campgrounds exceeded my highest expectations and had the most friendly, kindest, and most wonderful staff & owners. The campground is famous for its sold out annual Bluegrass festival yet it is gaining attention for its powwow events. It was very easy to find the campground. We went to the Five River Campgrounds for the Third Annual Powwow in Parsons in June 2025. It was the most meaningful pow wow I ever experienced. The owners of the campground (Joyce & John) gave the sales of the tickets to the powwow to the MMIW (Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women) Memorial Grove. The non profit organization is involved in promoting awareness for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women. Some of the performers gave their earnings to MMIW Memorial Grove as well. The Five Rivers Campgrounds owners welcomed us with open arms and immediately noticed us as photographers. We do a lot of philanthropic work in photography yet we rarely get noticed or thanked by many people for it. The owners of the campground were selling tee shirts and stickers with our photography. We had given permission to have our photography used to the performer we have taken the photo of and we were happy to see that he & the owners of the campground were displaying our photography on tee shirts and stickers in the campground shop. The campgrounds are beautiful with views of the mountain. Immediately staff helped us park and alerted us of the speed limit on the campgrounds. The powwow was held outdoors and there was an open air arena with a roof to provide shade. The stage in the venue had a shelter and a good view. You had to provide your own seating, yet we knew that beforehand. The fee for the pow wow was $10 for two days, and we captured the most memorable and beautiful photos we ever took on those days of performers in regalia against green foliage and the mountains. The powwow was small yet the amazing camaraderie and performers were unforgettable. This was one of the finest powwow venues in ambiance, performance, connections, and professionalism we ever experienced.

Coming from out of town for the weekend, my comrades and I were looking to go camping for the 4th of July- and with the closest state park booked, this was a close alternative to our ideal location. Not only did we find the prices very fair, but our tent campsite was ideal! The Buckhorne is a great place to tent camp. They have spaces that have fire pits and tables - you pay a tad extra for electric hookups (but we didn't need them). They have ample parking and their shower/bathroom facilities are clean and bug-free! In addition to RV camp sites, they have a great on-site store you can utilize if you forgot a few essentials. It has the local ice cream shop and DVD/VHS rentals as well as well seasoned firewood for sale. Tons of space to allow guests to come and go. This place is family owned and the family that owns it is just the most friendliest people you will meet. They always great you as if you were friends for ages and are always willing to help you out with any questions you have. They do allow their family cats to roam freely but they won't wander to your campsite unless invited - no worries, they are super friendly! And, if you are lucky, you may see the campsite owl that lives nearby - a mascot of sorts that is as talkative as she is beautiful! I would def recommend anyone in the Clifton Forge area to stop on in for a snack or ice cream treat at least. These people are what hospitality is truly about and they are the sweetest family you will meet. If you are planning on staying, do inquire about check in hours, as they do change day to day.
