The hike itself was fairly easy and can be finish under a hour. It is dog friendly, fairly shaded, and trail is well marked. You can sit down on the rock ledges and look at the incredible panoramic views of the Shenandoah Valley and the Blue Ridge Mountains. There is a small parking lot. It's a perfect spot for a quick getaway from the city, whether you're going for sunrise, sunset, or just a relaxing day outdoors. After can hit up Bear Chase Brewery close by.

However, the…read moreShenandoah River State Park, down the mountain from well known Skyline Drive and its accompanying federal parkland, is by no means inferior. A rural drive leads to a visitor center, trails, an overlook, river access, and campgrounds. I had time for only a brief visit, but the views were majestic. It would be an excellent place to return for a hike. As with most of Virginia's state parks, there is a modest entrance fee, but I'm sure it's well worth it.

This location is incredible, rich with things to do, views to see, and adventures to have with enough time. The cabins are gorgeous, fair warning that there is no television, but honestly who cares?! I had great phone signal which almost never happens on these excursions, and I loved making a fire in my fireplace and sitting on the porch with coffee for sunrise, which I could see from Cabin 11. This cabin also was at the end and felt private, even though I could see my neighbors (who had set up Christmas lights! How fun!) There's also a wonderful hiking trail right by these cabins, 10 and 11, the Red Tail Ridge, that was semi-short (2.5 miles or so if desired to create a loop with Big Oak) and had views of the river and Shenandoah valley below!

It's a little pricey, especially when the weather is bad and you can't enjoy the river for fishing, tubing, etc. It's rather quiet, although quite full at the same time. The cabins appear to be extremely nice and a good price if a group of 8 were meeting up for a weekend. They had a full kitchen and bath and even a hot tub. The camp store had the essentials and the staff was friendly. Outlanders would definitely be a good home base for those wanting to explore the Valley during the day and return to the campground for a peaceful evening.

He went above and beyond to make me feel stupid, laughed and said "of course there is a fee all day everyday and there are signs everywhere " the park was littered with trash so bad that my Granddaughter even commented how nasty the park was. Pretty bad when a 3 year old notices but not the staff. But even worse to project your anger on visitors.

The bathrooms were not well maintained-no toilet paper and a gaping hole for people to peep into the women's restroom while they are using the restroom. Views are prettier elsewhere on the river anyways.

Old Mill Park is an expansive flat meadow North East of Fredericksburg, VA and gently slopes off…read moredown to the Rappahannock River. There's place for football, frisbee, grilling and even some goals for soccer. The river is swimmable although the currents are very strong and can be filled with debris after storms. There is a memorial garden, parking area and lots of benches to relax on. On both sides of the wide Rappahannock River are houses or dwellings of a bygone either Civil War or even Colonial Era. This park was lots of fun to explore: hanging around the hiking path along the banks, log skips and throwing a football. The park is maintained by a Fredericksburg municipal park crew that oversees the grass, the shrubs and trees. Review: great outing

There is a nice picnic area near the parking area with some grills and benches. The walk along the path is beautiful with nice views of the Potomac river. Walking up the path you can access the WSSC water plant. Beautiful place for a nice stroll or a bike ride on the C&O path - family fun guaranteed!

C & O Canal Tow Path nearby? It is right off the tow path. Plus parking is onsite. Minutes away from the city to feel like you're in a remote area of nature, but close enough if you need to get back to the city in 30 minutes. The original Swain Lock is onsite, but also is currently under construction surrounded by a chain-link fence. It might be a little tricky, but you could kayak from here too. I am not sure what the regulations are on it, but it didn't look too difficult to do if you wanted to jump off from this site to get into the water.

My little ones loved the scavenger hunt and the Easter Egg hunt and of course my 16yr old loved his time on the lake and we even beat the escape room (with a 5 minute extension lol). The cabin was super clean and well stocked and the staff was so quick to help with every consideration! We enjoyed our week so much we are considering becoming members! highly recommend Wilderness Resort to all my out of state relatives and even my in state friends that need a weekend getaway!

Tubing Review: We had an amazing time. Was is exhausting,…read moreyes. Worth it, yes! Owen was great. He was a great driving the stick shift bus back to the outfitters. It was nice being dropped off and picked up. We did have issues with our card online, but when I called in to book, Nancy was helpful. She got us all situated and sent an email to confirm. We filled out waivers online which was a breeze. We watched a quick safety video, picked up our lifevest and were on our way. The water was the perfect temp, and it was clear. Tips: bring snacks and water. You are out there 4-5 or longer hours. Especially if the water is low, which ours was. We used a waterproof bag and had no issues. We used a tube with a cup holder which was nice. I wore my life vest out of precaution even though I can swim, plus it made it comfortable for my to use it as a neck rest. I've noticed people mention in previous reviews that the bus was dirty ect. Um, you're in the woods. If you get picked up after many other groups the bus will be dirty as everyone is wet coming out of the water no matter what activity you choose. I would not own a brand spanking new vehicle for this type of environment and job. Used is best and saves money I'm sure. Wear a hat and sunglasses, put in that sunscreen. Bring a waterproof phone case/bag. You will have no service out there so put it on airplane mode and use it as a camera.
