Ok here goes. my friend introduced me to yelp and i am officially writing my first review! I recently moved to crystal lake, IL from San Francisco. tell me about it. its been an adjustment, most notably the weather and food. Ive been spoiled in SF being able to go directly into chinatown and eat genuine chinese cuisine as well as japanese, greek, etc etc. Well let me tell you, i was pretty dissapointed with the chinese restaurants in crystal lake (sorry crystal lake) as most of them all tasted the same (bad/bland) and had nothing special going on. then, my friend suggested i try plum garden in mchenry. Even though ive been used to more traditional chinese food, i really really like this place! i would consider plum garden more of an american inspired chinese restaurant. however, the first time i ate here i was blown away! From the cool outside look, to the neon signs and hip presentation inside, i really liked the look of this place to start. my friend and i went in on a saturday night and this place was packed! i guess they have a booming carry out business as a lot of the people coming into the place were picking up. My only real complaint is the lack of a waiting area but my friend told me this place has been around for 30+ years so i guess you have to give them some kudos to working with the space they have. we ended up moving into the small bar area and ordered a couple of drinks while we waited for a table. i enjoyed a mai tai, it was pretty tasty :) Once we were seated, our server suggested we try the famous plum garden egg rolls since they make them fresh daily. we ordered the egg rolls and barbeque pork as our appetizers. i am in love with the bbq pork! i dont know what they do different with it, but i couldnt get pork this good in SF! For dinner, my friend ordered the Hong Kong Chicken with Steak , and i ordered the Heavens Nest. Both dishes were amazing! you get ginormous portions and i thought the heavens nest presentation was beautiful! i really enjoyed my shrimp and garlic from the heavens nest and i loooove oyster sauce so i definitely liked the chicken too. the steak was perfectly cooked and i was really surprised to see them use a high quality steak meat instead of the crappy low end steak meat you get from most chinese restaurants. I simply loved the food! great fresh flavors! while its not the traditional style im used to, its something unique and delicious on it's own. Our service was great too. our waitress had a lot of tables but she always managed to stop by at the perfect time to refill our drinks or ask us how everything was. also, i noticed one of the hosts had a beatiful arm tattoo and couldnt help but ask him about it since im into body art myself :) turns out his tattoo artist lives in san francisco and he flies out there every so often! we both laughed when i told him i was originally from SF. small world! thank you plum garden for a wonderful experience! i will be back! i whole heartedly reccomend this place to everyone! one review down....many more to come! read more

Definitely the best Chinese food I have ever had, and I'm not big on Chinese. Last I went I was with my mother and aunt, and they both thought of Plum Garden as gourmet Chinese food. I would definitely have to agree with that statement. You are greeted with friendly workers and are never left waiting long. The portions that you get here are amazing and you will surely not be left hungry. The interior of the restaurant is very welcoming and calming. It is neatly decorated with things that would apply to the Chinese culture (unlike some Chinese restaurants that throw in odd Thai or Japanese items). The Hong Kong Chicken is definitely their most popular dish for a reason; it will not disappoint. I have never had such amazing tasting chicken! There is also a unique dish I have never had before called Heaven's Nest, where they place an assortment of shrimp and scallops in a nest of crispy noodles. This dish has to be one of my favorites; it tastes absolutely divine. At one point the scallops, shrimp, and garlic mix soak the nest of noodle, making them slightly soggy but deliciously flavorful. The nest had to be one of my favorite parts of the dish. While I was there, I asked one of the chefs to create me a dish with pineapples, which was something he had already had on his mind. The dish was a Hawaiian Steak delight. The chef made it with steak bits, seared pineapple with stir-fry. The meal was to die for. The steak was cooked perfectly; nice and tender, and the pineapples were exquisite with the entire dish. They will soon be adding this meal to their menu for all to try! read more

Went out to eat with some friends over the weekend and had one of the best dining experiences of my life. I fell in love with chinese food again! Atmosphere: the dining room is decorated really well and i loved all the nice little touches like the hanging paper lanterns and giant neon dragons. so cool. Wait Staff: We were lucky and ended up getting a fantastic waiter. he was knowledgeable about the menu and extremely personable. always checked in and made sure we had everything we needed. ask for paul! Food: AMAZING! Ive been having some bad luck lately with asian restaurants but thankfully plum garden did not disappoint. We ended up ordering the egg rolls and their appetizer sampler. Best egg rolls ive ever had. for dinner, we ordered hong kong chicken, fried rice, and the perry moy chicken. everything was great. the portion sizes were huge so i ended up having leftovers for the next couple of days. yummy! I recently dined here while visiting a friend and I am so glad i did! I wouldn't consider myself an expert on asian cusine but i am definitely picky and have my own set of high standards. I have to say that plum garden is the first chinese restaurant I have been to where I've enjoyed every single item i ordered! When we first walked in, I was pleasantly surprised by the decor of the place. It was really cute! We were immediately greeted and sat. our waitress was also really nice and made some great recommendations for us. She told us they hand roll their eggrolls everyday so i couldn't pass them up. They were great! We also ordered their hong kong chicken, classic fried rice, and cashew chicken. The hong kong chicken is hands down the best chicken I have ever had at any chinese restaurant. It was crispy and had a delicious sauce! Everything else we ordered tasted fantastic. Overall, everything tasted really fresh. I will definitely be back soon! read more

Since the serious decline of the food at The Breakers, my wife and I decided to give the new Plum Garden in Crystal Lake a shot. They moved in right down the road from The Breakers. We walked in to order take-out and sat at the bar to have a drink while we waited. I ordered a Bacardi and Coke and the bartender stated they don't serve Bacardi (a staple at any bar in America!). Anyway, we got home and unpacked the food (egg rolls, fried rice, and Hong Kong chicken). All of it was bland and disgusting! The egg roll was enormous, but tasted terrible. As bad as the food has gotten at The Breakers, this place is clearly not a replacement. We will continue to look for a legit Chinese restaurant in McHenry county, which seems to have seen a decline in a lot of other ethnic restaurants lately, as well (Pablo's!). read more

My daughter ordered meals for Father's day. Chicken & Beef & a Beef dish. She was told that the 2 dishes were made with filet mignon.There is no way those dishes were made with filet the beef was so tuff it was almost unedited! The chicken was also very tuff & dry like it was extremely over cooked. The only dish we liked was the fried rice and that was mediocre at best. I've eaten & had food from Plum Garden before & I've been dissatisfied then too, but I'm a firm believer in 2nd & even 3rd & 4th chances because circumstances can always change. My wife & I have lived in McHenry County for 33 years, but we're done NEVER AGAIN will we order or eat at Plum Garden. read more

Hong Kong Chicken, Hong Kong Chicken, Hong Kong Chicken... Ok now that we got that covered, In the Mchenry county area, this is my favorite place to for Chinese food, I have also tried the fried rice, w/ chicken and w/beef, I have bits and pieces of other foods but I can't remember the name. The prices are normal, nothing cheap, nothing over priced. You should also try the Crab Rangoon, not healthy at all, but very delicious. This place is usually busy depending on the time of day you come in. If your in the mood for Chinese foods, you should definitely go! read more

just went here again recently with my GF. i love this place. to me its the best chinese food around mchenry county. when i go i always get the hong kong chicken and an egg roll. im in love with their sweet and sour sauce! my GF likes the mongolian beef over pan fried noodles. both dishes rock. we usually try to go earlier since sometimes you can end up waiting since they do such big take out business. overall though its worth the wait. ive never had a bad meal here and i would recommend eating here to anyone. just be prepared for giant portions! read more

My favorite locally owner Chinese restaurant in McHenry for sure. I have spent most of my special occasions either here or at bimbos. Birthdays, anniversaries, graduations have all been spent here with family and friends. The Hong Kong chicken is out of this world. A must try. With egg drop soup to start and a Mai Tai if you're into that sort of thing. Congrats Plum Garden on being a long running traditional spot to enjoy a special occasion over amazing food and drinks. read more

Food is always good if you don't mind the wait. Add 20 minutes to any carryout time they tell you on the phone. The family that owns it is very active in the community and they are all very friendly. Some of the staff has been there for years and they treat their customers very well. Fortune cookie says: Patience is a virtue you must have if you want Plum Garden. Our waitress was great, her name was Iris. She was very attentive and informative about the current specials. We tried both the Mango Mai Tai special as well as the Bacon Mac and Cheese Egg Roll Special. The rest of the meal was great as well - Orange shrimp (limited time) dinner and the Triple Dragon.
