I've had Plum Designs work on several window covering projects for me this year to put the finishing touches on a major home remodel. Everything they've done looks absolutely beautiful - including motorized drapes, motorized roller shades (all controlled by a remote control and phone app), manual roller shades, honeycomb duette shades, regular roman shades and motorized roman shades behind my sofa in the TV Room. All are very high quality (Hunter Douglass), look stunning and were installed with care and precision. I had one or two small issues after install and Valerie arranged to have those shades entirely replaced without an issue. Customer service overall is excellent. Valerie will travel to you (I live in Berkeley) and has a great esthetic and is able to help with material and color selection to work with your interior and budget. Just an awful experience working with Valerie. In the end my drapery is nice, but it was not worth the hassle she caused. If you go with Plum Designs, good luck - my advice is, don't let her bully you into accepting mistakes, and don't give her your credit card number. I engaged Valerie to install a floor-to-ceiling drapery on a wide sliding glass door in my new home. She and Pauline came out and showed fabric samples, took measurements, and provided a quote which I accepted without haggling. I paid a 50% deposit via credit card on the spot. It took a little longer than estimated for the installation (10 weeks), but I was willing to wait. When the installer came, the drapery was not wide enough! All the way open, it still covered a large portion of the window. The installer said the measurements were incorrect. Furthermore, the rail was a two-piece splice and the rollers always stuck on the splice so it wouldn't open and close smoothly. Sure I was disappointed, but I know mistakes can happen. I contacted Valerie and let her know about these two problems. To my surprise, rather than offering to fix it, she tried very hard to convince me that I should accept it as-is with the wrong size drape + difficult to open and close. For a single drapery costing over $2200 that was unacceptable. I insisted that she fix it. After another 5 weeks, the installer reinstalled it. They had sewed an extension to the original drape so that it would be wide enough, and added a third splice section to the rail. Now the drapery was the right size and looked nice, but it was even harder to open and close since there were now two gaps in the rail. I had to use a step stool to reach the top of the drapery in order to get it open and closed. The installer told me there was nothing he could do, and said the solution was to use a single rail instead of splicing. So once again I contacted Valerie and asked her to fix it. She tried to charge me an additional $366 for shipping to get my three-piece rail replaced with the one-piece rail that I should've had from the start. I refused and had to insist, once again, on getting the work done correctly for the quoted price. She relented and three weeks later the installer returned to install a single-piece rail. Finally after 5 months everything was right and I was ready to pay the balance. But then ... she didn't bill me. Instead, I found out that she had kept my credit card information from 5 months earlier without telling me. Without authorization, without even a phone call or email to confirm, she charged the entire $1100 balance to the same card. I found out only afterwards. [Edit: Since Valerie has chosen to reply with false and libelous statements about our interaction, that's one more thing you might want to be concerned about. I asked her to fix the problems, and she refused and denied that there were any issues at all. Later, she tried to charge me more. This was frustrating and I told her so, but there was no "violent outburst of anger." She did seem quite taken aback when I told her she was in the wrong and that she would have to fix her mistakes at her expense.] read more

We ordered Hunter Douglas shades for our whole house from Plum Designs and Blinds, and absolutely love them! They work exactly as intended, with the sheer and opaque options giving us great control over our need for sun protection and privacy from the street. The look is very elegant, and given that we have grand-children who visit often, the safety of the mechanisms was important to us. I hadn't given much thought to all the considerations when selecting the best window treatments, but Haluk and Valerie were very helpful in asking us the right questions so we could get exactly what we needed. When the estimate came in higher than we expected and wanted to spend, they again helped us decide what we were willing to compromise on, and came back with a plan that fit our budget more closely. Installation went without a glitch and we were very happy! I have a bay window in my living room, and knew I wanted a bench cushion for it as well as some sort of nearly invisible window treatments; I like a lot of natural light. I was at a loss about where to look for the window treatments, especially knowing the size is irregular. I searched on Yelp, and found Valerie. She was quick to respond, and was able to schedule an appointment right away to come to my house. That visit, we were able to knock out the selection for the windows: white honeycomb blinds with a slight texture. They can raise and lower by the use of a clear handle attached at the bottom; no pull strings. She was able to quote me a price for them then and there, and we did the order on the spot. The installer contacted me within the estimated time, and was able to accomodate my work schedule and get them installed fairly quickly. My favorite thing is that when they are open (almost all the time), they's so minimal that they visually disappear into the window trim. I wanted to figure out the most ideal fabric option for the bench cushion, so she left a few sample books with me, and even dropped others off on two separate occasions, after my first pick was discontinued. Once I picked the fabric, she was able to quickly price out the cushion and get it ordered. I told her I want it super cushiony...She dropped it off yesterday (a little less than the estimated six weeks), and we placed it, and it is very plush just like I wanted! I'm pretty sure there's no life time warranty on these shades, but the Akcams make it appear that way. With this kind of service, I would buy anything from this family owned and operated company. We used Plum design to install a few shades. They only use hunter douglas products so there is a premium. But we got quotes from other places and they still had the best quote even though other places offered different products. I appreciated that they were knowledgeable about the different products and were able to give feedback based on their experience. They also let us know about special deals that HD was having. The two people who own this company are top notch. We needed an advice for replacing our patio door shade. We received an immediate response for a home visit within days to give suggestions for what to do. The first color Valerie chose that fit our room was spot on to match a file cabinet we did not even think of. She helped us the rest of the windows blinds as they were partially working. If you are looking for a company in the East Bay (Alameda and Contra Costa counties) that specializes in quality window coverings, offers in-home consultation, and provides really excellent service from start to finish we highly recommend Blindmobile. Valerie Akcam, the owner of this company with a quirky name, is knowledgeable, professional and very responsive to her customers' needs. We were in the market for Hunter Douglas window coverings for our home in the East Bay hills several years ago and were referred to Valerie and Blindmobile after less than satisfactory experiences with consultants at Expo and other large commercial businesses. From our first in-home consultation we were impressed with Valerie. Unlike many in the business who try to sell you what they'd want to have in their home or what gets them the biggest $$$ sale, she really listened to what WE wanted in terms of material, look and style. Then she showed us samples that made sense and that helped us make the right choice. Since our first purchase of Hunter Douglas window coverings five years ago - we completed two bedrooms and a total of nine windows with that transaction - we've gone back to Valerie and Blindmobile several times. We now also have functional and beautiful window coverings in our living room and computer room, master bedroom, entry hallway, guest bathroom and kitchen. An added bonus is what the window coverings do for all around comfort inside the house. Our home gets morning sun in the master bedroom and computer room and the full impact of afternoon sun in the living room and back two bedrooms, but the Hunter Douglas shades we chose with Valerie's help keep the rooms cool and pleasant year round. A true test of just how responsive a business can be is when things don't go exactly right following a sale and, based on our experience, Blindmobile came through with flying colors again. Here's what happened and how the problem was addressed. The window coverings that we had installed in our living room and computer room were of a slightly different material and weave than those in the rest of the house. But we liked how they looked and the fact that we had the option of raising them in the traditional bottom up mode OR could drop them from the top down for added privacy. However, after a few months the window coverings began to sag in the middle when fully opened. Valerie came out and agreed that there was a problem. She consulted with Hunter Douglas and the company took them back without a hassle and sent us a new set (six window coverings in all). Within 4-6 weeks the new window coverings arrived and were reinstalled. To our frustration, it took only 6-8 weeks before the new window coverings also began to sag. We contacted Valerie again and this time she had the Hunter Douglas district representative, Barbara, come out with her. Both saw that there was a problem with these particular window coverings - turns out the weave was too loose to handle the added weight associated with the bottom up/top down option - and, on the spot, the Hunter Douglas rep offered to replace the window coverings with a different design of our choice. We went with a tighter weave like the window coverings in our bedrooms and the results have been entirely satisfactory both in looks and in function. In addition, because the new window coverings had the wall mounts slightly offset from the original ones we needed to have an installer come out to rehang them. Again, this was fully covered by Blindmobile and Hunter Douglas at no additional cost to us. Amazing! As you can tell, we are big fans of Blindmobile and the personal and professional service that Valerie provides. The window covering manufacturers that she represents are all well known - Hunter Douglas, Alta, CRS roman shades, Conrad, Ado Fabrics - and provide high quality, high end products.
