Good stuff. It feels like you're skiing at your friend's mountain. Cozy, and amazing views. Go for the slush cup at the end of the season! I wouldn't be caught dead trying to make it across the slush, but my friends and I GOT SUBNURNS SKIING IN T-SHIRTS LAST YEAR!!!

Black Mountain of Maine is a wonderful anti-corporate answer to the "big" areas. Cozy, friendly, and beautiful runs down the mountain. A place where kids can run around without fear or the need for parental hovering. A kick-butt bar with live music. Simply, what skiing was and should be.... We got here for the first time on the Indy Pass as we have been visiting Indy areas, some of them for several years in a row. Black Mountain is a short drive away from downtown Rumford, a paper mill, quaint town of 6,000 people featuring historic homes and a working downtown. Arriving at Black Mountain, the large lodge is quite welcoming, with just about every conceivable need within the lodge. Once outside, the beginner's Novice Lift provides optimal runs for novices or warmups. The main lift, although a slow fixed triple, allows access to most of the 1,100 vertical terrain and a variety of trails. It should be said that with some effort and uphill hiking, there is another side of the mountain, glades galore, that is accessible from this area. There is yet another T-bar that provides access to even more terrain. Apres-ski, we were treated to a superb pub with great rock music, plenty of beer, and great company. Overall, the vibe in this mountain is what I remember skiing was like from my youth. Unhurried, civil, friendly, and simple. Awesome place.

Not only is the location great, the owner, Matt is absolutely fantastic. The hiking all around the yurts is perfect for kids and we find so much to do. If we were feeling cooped up and wanted to go out Brownfield is so close to great hiking, skiing, and paddling we could easily do that, but we have not wanted to leave the yurts. Matt, the owner is so fun and personable. He really cares about his customers and worked with us when we needed to reschedule repeatedly. I have stayed at other yurts in Maine before, but never more than once. Frost Mountain Yurts will always be my favorite spot. Logistically know that it is very easy to get to your yurt. The trails are very well marked and the sled or cart you use is big and it's really nothing to get there but then you feel completely secluded. Mountain View Yurt is the only one that has felt a little far, but the view is totally worth it. The outhouses are super clean and the yurt is very clean and cozy. There is an option to have Matt warm up your yurt for you upon arrival and I totally recommend that in the winter.

We stayed at the "Mountain View" yurt, which is about a half mile walk along a nice trail. They supply you with carts in the non snow season and sled during the snowy season. If you are going to see a show at Stone Mountain Arts Center, it's the perfect, nearby spot to stay. At this point I've been to Frost Mountain 4 or 5 times. We've done the romantic version, where you see a show and then go back to the cozy, warm yurt. The kid version, where you pack the yurt full of children and let them run around in the woods during the day. And the group version with adults, where you drink and play cards by fire light. Each version of our stay was perfect and I can't wait to go back! Highly recommend!

And even though Thursdays are the discount lift ticket days for Maine residents, we were able to park very close to the small lodge. It was under $40 for two adult all-day lift tickets. The west side is much smaller with easier trails. But it like the main lodge, offers ticket window, rentals and a full service snack bar. We always pack our cooler and drinks and eat inside or sometimes on the outside patio when all the inside seats are taken. The restrooms are clean. Staff is friendly. Bean subsidizes these lift tickets (available for purchase in-person with proof of Maine residency). I was so thankful to learn of this super deal as I had pretty much given up skiing because of lack of affordability, Mt. Abram doesn't have the variety of terrain that its neighbor Sunday River has, but it also doesn't have the astronomical prices or crowds either. For someone who just wants to get out a few times a year and do some hot-dogging (jk!) in the crisp Maine air without breaking the bank, this is a great option, with lift tickets a max of $42/day. Note - I was glad we brought lunches because the Loose Boots Lounge was closed. It's only open for lunch Fri. - Sunday. However, looking at the menu and beer prices, I'm sorry it was closed. A Stella Artois for $5 at a ski mountain? Unheard of. So glad to have this option only an hour away :)

Cranmore delivered just that and more. Lots of greens and blues where I could work on my skills, try trails with escalating difficulty, and still kick back when I just want to enjoy myself and not be a ball of nerves. I also enjoyed the length and variety of their many trails I could traverse. Was happy to have more options than just a quick up and down in a straight line over a full day of skiing. Their main lift was quick and skiers were able to load efficiently. Lots to look at on the way up. The day of my last visit there were several ski competitions going on just next to the lift so it was fun to watch people competing and see spectators make the trek up to watch as well. Ski patrol were out and about and lots of staff available to check in with as needed. The lodge itself had everything I needed... free cubbies to store your stuff, bench seating to change into your boots, adequate table space both up and downstairs to grab a bite to eat, indoor and outdoor gas fireplaces to huddle by, a bar and hot foods, and best of all... a bathroom at the same level as where you can ski up to so no having to navigate stairs in clunky footwear. Drop off area for skis, quick in and out to purchase tickets, simple walk over to a very large parking area. I can't wait to return when the opportunity arises!
