The doorman for the bathroom.

My family and I were looking for a place to camp while visiting my girlfriends family for a 5 night stay in the beautiful town of Bridgton. We were given a list of campgrounds in the area and all of them were booked (including Lakeside Pines) but there was a cancelation so we were fortunate enough to get a tent/soft-sided RV camp spot. The location is just a short ride away from the center of town and is relatively close to some great hiking trails. (Hawk Mountain is definitely worth a visit). The lake that Lakeside Pines borders, Long Lake, is a beautiful spot and the campground has a great beach location which includes a great swimming area as well as boat and kayak rentals if you are feeling a bit more adventurous. The lake itself is worth a full star in my review. Unfortunately, it was mainly downhill from there. At a rustic campground like this, I simply can't underestimate how important bathrooms and showers can be. For my review, I took away 1 star for the bathrooms and 1 for the showers. They were among the worst I've seen at a campground in recent memory. Yes, I understand this is a very rustic campground and there will naturally be insects... but WOW. I wouldn't be surprised if somebody told me that these restrooms had never been cleaned. The toilets themselves weren't terrible, but I found myself wiping the seat down literally just to get the bugs off of it. The GIANT spider who greeted me inside the men's restroom at midnight wasn't my idea of "wildlife fun". Maybe this wouldn't happen if there weren't gaping holes in the structure of the building itself. The showers were on the same level. The coin operated-hot water access seemed a bit uncalled for due to the relatively steep $48 a night price tag. If I hadn't brought shower sandals, I would have just as soon brought my shampoo into the lake. It was hard for me to shower with so many eyes watching me. If each spider has 8 eyes, then I had at least 800 eyes on me. To be fair, most of them had been dead since 1990... but still. My dad and I found ourselves fighting over who got "shower #3" because that one has the least amount of bugs inside. I get the feeling that these areas aren't cleaned very often because so many of the campers are "seasonal" and therefore have their own bathrooms and showers located in the comfort of their own RV because I literally didn't see any other campers in the restrooms. Not a single one. Like I said, there are some bright spots. The lake, a nice playground with a HUGE slide, a basketball hoop, swings, a movie night on the weekends, and a fun little arcade with a pool table, arcade games, and a jukebox. The fellow campers seemed pretty nice as well even though I never really spoke to anybody. But at the end of the day, it doesn't take much to maintain a campground when so many of the locals are self sufficient-seasonal campers. If anybody at Lakeside Pines is reading this...I can't stress this enough... Clean. Your. Restrooms!! You could easily be a 4/5 star campground and it wouldn't require too much work on your part.

Overcrowded and dirty, this campground supports mostly seasonal campers. I found it to be dirty and left after one night.

On the Saco Family Campground - The view of the playground from our site. The kids loved being independent and exploring. Loved the space.

Ok, so I'm by NO means a campground person. This year I was convinced to join another couple families for their yearly trip to On the Saco Campground and I'm glad I did. It's not a huge place, but it's very well kept and VERY clean. No smelly outhouses or grimy bathrooms, both were maybe a little rustic but in good working order and again, very clean. My site was tree lined giving plenty of privacy, nicely mowed and had a fire ring. I don't know if they employ some kind of mosquito management but for a wooded site about 80ft from water, I didn't get one bite over my 3 night stay. There's a little store with pretty much any essential you may have forgotten for sale, small game room, washer/dryer, and dishwashing area. You can rent tubes and canoes, (I did both) and the staff is super friendly and helpful, (especially when we got caught in the rain and they came to pick us up earlier and at a different location than intended). They had some kind of activity everyday, I saw face painting one afternoon by the office, there was a glow stick parade one night, corn-hole tournament the next, and a movie night the third. A lot of Saco campground are shitshows, (I'm talking about you Fiddlehead!) full of wasted college kids, this place IS NOT THAT. If that's what you want, keep moving. However, if you're looking for a clean, friendly place that is definitely family friendly and a more peaceful but still fun experience I'd recommend On the Saco Family Campground for sure.

The owners Jason and Tori were hands down the nicest campground owners we've ever met. They were helpful, and accommodating. They went above and beyond with everything. It's a small campground and very family friendly. It's clean and has a real camping feel. The staff was also very friendly as well. We will definitely be back, and will highly recommend then to other fellow campers. I love supporting nice family campgrounds like this. Check them out!

There is a parking lot and we were able to find parking but I'm sure it gets full at peak times. We enjoyed the hike and the waterfalls. It was in late May so there were quite a few people there. It's a peaceful spot to relax, sit in the pool, and just enjoy nature. I'm glad my family and I got to visit during this trip!

When we noticed an opening, we asked nearby drivers if we could squeeze in, and they had no issue with it. As we were parking, an employee approached us in a very aggressive and unprofessional manner and told us we could not park there. We apologized and explained that we were not from the area and had not seen any signs. We were told that the rule was "well known to locals" and that a sign existed at the front of the line--more than 25 cars ahead, making it impossible for us to see. Despite the surrounding drivers having no objection, the employee demanded we leave and became increasingly hostile when we asked questions or requested a manager. At that point, the interaction escalated unnecessarily, and we decided it wasn't worth the confrontation and left. I've never experienced such a level of rudeness from a staff member over an honest misunderstanding. Clear signage and more professional communication would have avoided the entire situation. Someone even yelled out "stop being a parking nazi". I would have otherwise liked to review the venue itself, but we were unable to do so as we never made it inside.

Not only is the location great, the owner, Matt is absolutely fantastic. The hiking all around the yurts is perfect for kids and we find so much to do. If we were feeling cooped up and wanted to go out Brownfield is so close to great hiking, skiing, and paddling we could easily do that, but we have not wanted to leave the yurts. Matt, the owner is so fun and personable. He really cares about his customers and worked with us when we needed to reschedule repeatedly. I have stayed at other yurts in Maine before, but never more than once. Frost Mountain Yurts will always be my favorite spot. Logistically know that it is very easy to get to your yurt. The trails are very well marked and the sled or cart you use is big and it's really nothing to get there but then you feel completely secluded. Mountain View Yurt is the only one that has felt a little far, but the view is totally worth it. The outhouses are super clean and the yurt is very clean and cozy. There is an option to have Matt warm up your yurt for you upon arrival and I totally recommend that in the winter.

We stayed at the "Mountain View" yurt, which is about a half mile walk along a nice trail. They supply you with carts in the non snow season and sled during the snowy season. If you are going to see a show at Stone Mountain Arts Center, it's the perfect, nearby spot to stay. At this point I've been to Frost Mountain 4 or 5 times. We've done the romantic version, where you see a show and then go back to the cozy, warm yurt. The kid version, where you pack the yurt full of children and let them run around in the woods during the day. And the group version with adults, where you drink and play cards by fire light. Each version of our stay was perfect and I can't wait to go back! Highly recommend!
