This year I was convinced to join another couple families for their yearly trip to On the Saco Campground and I'm glad I did. It's not a huge place, but it's very well kept and VERY clean. No smelly outhouses or grimy bathrooms, both were maybe a little rustic but in good working order and again, very clean. My site was tree lined giving plenty of privacy, nicely mowed and had a fire ring. I don't know if they employ some kind of mosquito management but for a wooded site about 80ft from water, I didn't get one bite over my 3 night stay. There's a little store with pretty much any essential you may have forgotten for sale, small game room, washer/dryer, and dishwashing area. You can rent tubes and canoes, (I did both) and the staff is super friendly and helpful, (especially when we got caught in the rain and they came to pick us up earlier and at a different location than intended). They had some kind of activity everyday, I saw face painting one afternoon by the office, there was a glow stick parade one night, corn-hole tournament the next, and a movie night the third. A lot of Saco campground are shitshows, (I'm talking about you Fiddlehead!) full of wasted college kids, this place IS NOT THAT. If that's what you want, keep moving. However, if you're looking for a clean, friendly place that is definitely family friendly and a more peaceful but still fun experience I'd recommend On the Saco Family Campground for sure.

It's maybe 1 mile from Wolfe's Neck State Park. This is part of an agricultural education center of some sort, so there are some cows and crops around. There is a gift shop tent and a little cafe over by the working farm part of the facility if you are looking for it. Clean and well maintained campground for sure, bathrooms could use a tad more attention, but a great value as it is. They have kayaks on the beach for you to use at no cost, which is super cool. Even 2 person ocean kayaks! Life jackets and paddles are at the shed by the playground. The playground is being used all the time and kids seem to like it. Our little guy isn't quite big enough for it yet, no little baby swings, only big kid swings. Hot showers are included so you won't need quarters like some parks which is more convenient for sure!

Pros: - Connie (owner?) was very sweet on the phone when booking and when we checked in. - Wooded, private sites with plenty of space for a tent, car, chairs, etc. - Tent site #12 was right next to a big field which we ended up having exclusive use of for frisbee and nigh sky watching - There's a pool (kids love pools) - 5 min drive to Bradbury Mountain State Park - 35 minutes from Portland - Clean (bathrooms, tent site, general campground) - Great for families and kids; very SAFE location and overall feeling Eh's: - There are many RV sites... probably more than tent sites, which adds a different vibe to the place if you're tenting. - There were many dogs at the RV sites... all yapping and barking all the time - RV people get up and start having a rollicking good time very early (and we were up at 730am!) Does this make it seem like I'm anti-RV camping? I'm not, I don't think... Cons: - "Quiet hours of 10pm - 8am strictly enforced!!" ... NOT SO MUCH. There were a few other families with kids near us, and it was great when everything got quiet around 9pm (when our young friend was tuckering out). Not great when around 10pm a car pulled in joining a tent site across the way and made lots of noise until 3am. 3AM is a terrible time to finally get to rest when you're with kids all day. Especially when the RV'ers wake you up at the sound of the rooster. - The "noisemakers" included a member of the staff/ daughter/ relative of the owners. We saw her working when we checked in, and then later when she brought her light-up hula-hoops to the site nearby. Her late night light show kept our tent feeling like a wooded rave for a few hours. - Public shaming of driving 10 MPH. oops! The MPH for the campground is 5. We went to the store after setting up our tent, and upon returning were driving too fast. As we slowed (approaching the stop sign at the office) a man (owner?) jumped out in front of us with his hand out and hollered "5 miles per hour!!!!!" in front of all the folks he was sitting on the lawn with. (from them: "where are they going?" "campsite 12!"). We came to a full stop, gave a thumbs up, and continued to our tent site at 3 MPH just to be safe. I'm sure this is my "stuff" but it made me feel weird for a little while....weird enough to include on this review I guess! Overall: I would probably come back, but asking young camping ravers to "please keep it down" at 230am sucks, so that leaves a sour taste. There's always a risk of loud neighbors when you share a wooded bedroom with dozens of campers, so the pros outweigh the cons here. Hopefully if we do come back, I'll remember to not use such a lead foot when driving. Again, Connie was a gem.

We are camping in a 34 foot R V and they put us very close to the bathrooms and showers. Showers were great and so was the laundry and you would think it would be loud where we were but it was not. I would say it is one of the nicest campgrounds we have ever stayed with and Freeport is only ten minutes away . The owners here make you feel like part of the family and they are working all the time to keep up this beautiful property. I would suggest it to anyone. It is an open woods environment with large grassy sites and good hook-ups.

We were traveling in our van and we made use of the shower facilities and the laundry facilities. There are two separate shower facilities - some on the exterior and two on the inside. The exterior showers were good - very typical for campgrounds. The showers on the inside were amazing! They were spacious and clean, hot water with great shower pressure, privacy and did I mention clean? The laundry room was attached and was very nice as well. If you have children (we did not), there seemed to be tons of things for them to do. Pickleball, volleyball, a paved surface and plenty of riding toys for littles and a playground. There was a nice firepit at each site and really nice touches through the park. The attendant in the office was so friendly and amazing! She, just like us, loves London (inside joke)! The machines were large and new. Price to run a load was $5.50. Bathrooms were super nice as well. My husband took a shower and was very happy with the shower size and how clean the bathroom was. It's very close to Portland, Freeport and Yarmouth. Only complaint was when it rains the site is mostly dirt so it would get tracked into the RV. Needs more gravel. Would definitely stay here again

Offered at 4:20 everyday is a weedchuterie board with a variety of edibles and sometimes some bud or concentrate to try! The perfect way to glamp without really taking the camping part out! Our Second Visit to Laughing Grass: A Cabin, A Confrontation, and Why We Won't Be Back…read moreThis was our second trip to Laughing Grass. The first time around, we stayed in one of the glamping tents -- and honestly, the tent itself left a lot to be desired. It was damp and musty the entire stay, and we weren't thrilled with the sleeping quarters. But everything else pulled us back: the river was beautiful, the 420-friendly activities were a blast, and the other campers we met made the trip memorable. So a couple of years later, we decided to give it another shot, this time booking a cabin instead. Before we left, a friend warned me that the staff had been rude to her on a past visit. I brushed it off -- everyone's experience is different, and I wanted to judge it for myself. In hindsight, I wish I'd listened a little more closely. Check-In Check-in officially starts at 3:00 PM. I called at 1:00 to ask if we could arrive early, and the woman on the phone said that would be fine -- come at 2:00. So we packed up and pulled in right on time. We were greeted by a staff member named Cole, who seemed pretty disorganized from the jump -- she mentioned more than once that she hadn't clocked in yet and that this was technically "her Monday." After walking us to our cabin, she let us know we'd actually need to park in a lot a quarter mile away, near the front entrance, and that a single-person golf cart would shuttle us back and forth as needed. Then came the surprise: a $25 early check-in fee, which nobody had mentioned on the phone. I paid it anyway and tried not to let it color the trip. A Great First Night -- Then a 3 AM Wrinkle Our first night was genuinely great. We had plans to wake up early the next morning for a hike to try to spot moose, so the evening before, I asked if I could park my car up near the cabins overnight -- that way we wouldn't have to wake anyone up to shuttle us to the far lot at 3 AM. Cole went to check with the owner, who was standing within earshot and said, essentially, "I have friends coming" -- implying that spot needed to stay open for them. Eventually, though, she agreed to let us park there. We got up at 3:00, left by 3:30, hiked, and were back at the campsite around 9:30 AM. On my way back to the cabin, I ran into one of the other staff members and asked if it'd be okay to take a quick nap before moving my car to the main lot. She said sure. The Confrontation About 30 minutes into that nap, there was a loud bang on the cabin door. It was Cole, telling me I needed to move my car immediately. I got up right away and came outside to find her waiting -- and what she said next caught me completely off guard: "We gave you an inch and you took a mile." I had no idea what she meant. When I asked her to explain, she said I'd parked there and "stayed parking there" all morning, and that she was disappointed to still see my car there. I explained, calmly, that I'd just gotten permission that very morning to take a nap before moving my car back up to the main lot. Her response was that she "didn't know what was going on, but I did" -- and that I shouldn't have kept my car there regardless. At that point she was raising her voice and arguing with me. My son was inside the cabin and heard the whole thing unfold. I was being scolded like a child over a misunderstanding that wasn't remotely intentional on my part -- I'd asked permission at every step, from the overnight parking to the nap. It was unprofessional, it was upsetting, and it wasn't something either of us deserved to be put through on what had otherwise been a good trip. Final Thoughts Between the musty tent on our first visit, the surprise fees, the disorganized check-in, and now being yelled at by staff over something I did nothing wrong to cause -- this was our last trip to Laughing Grass. The river and the community there are genuinely great, and that's what kept bringing us back. But the way we were treated on this visit, combined with a property that felt run-down and unclean, made it clear this isn't a place we can recommend or return to.

I almost never give 5 stars but this place deserves it. We stayed here 3 nights and used it as a…read morebase to explore the area and it was perfect. Very convenient to the areas of Freeport, Portland, Harpswell, Bailey Island, Boothbay and Pemaquid. The owner is so friendly and helpful. The campground, pool area (closed for the season while we were here), and bathrooms were immaculate. There are quite a few seasonal units here but all are well maintained. Roads are gravel and in pretty good condition and wide enough to easily back in any big rig. All the sites looked to us to be wide and afforded more privacy than most campgrounds we've been in. All looked pretty level and most of the transient sites seemed to be gravel and grass. There is no on site wifi (I do not penalize a campground for not having certain amenities as wifi or cable unless it is advertised and subpar). There is also no cable but we received a strong signal with about 10 channels and no interference even in stormy weather. I would gladly stay here again and recommend it highly.
