First time at a campsite in over 20 years. We went off to an event at the Mallett Barn and decided to spend the night and enjoy the gorgeous fall weekend. It did not disappoint! We stayed on site 309, which was a spacious, private lot evenly spaced between two restrooms and a short walk to the waterfront. We were up early and enjoyed fresh apple donuts, grilled blueberry muffins, and coffee at the camp store. Delicious! Before heading home we made our way to the State Park for a hike along the shore. It was spectacular. So many loops, child and pet friendly.

This is an interesting campground. I've never stayed at a campground with such a variety of sites from tiny to huge, very private to completely open. We stayed in East bay where there's a road with a mix of sites and then a field encircled by E/W sites. Those sites have very little privacy. We were at site 131 which was better than I expected it to be. It's a deep skinny site. The outhouses are a bit farther apart than I'm used to. There's a working farm on the property.

We had such a great time! The campground is so clean. I have never seen (or smelled) such clean bathrooms at a campground. We stayed in the quiet cove area (site 652) the caretaker and his dog are very friendly.

We picked this campground last minute driving through the coast of Maine. Driving through the town of Freeport we stopped at a thrift store and walked through the outlets which was also quite fun. But when we got to this campground we were pleasantly surprised. Not only is this a campground, but also a center for agriculture and environment. Gardens, dairy farm, and beautiful ocean views made this place very special. They have tent camping, cabins and water and electric hook ups. Unfortunately the café which serves food from local farms and the farm it's self was not open, but the beauty of this place made it extremely special. Hiking, biking, relaxing, swimming and kayaking are all available here. They even have goat hiking where you can go through the natural trails guided by a goat.

Snack shack! Great lobster roll!!

We stayed in the cabins at Recompence Campground and had a great experience! The staff were very friendly, helpful and considerate. The cabins were awesome! Now, I am a camper/outside type, so they seemed pretty lush to me. I even through around "glamping" while we were there. We rented two cabins, Point Senior and Cove, they share a little parking area and are tucked away from the other camping areas, right on the water! Cove has the BEST view of the ocean, both have the same layout/interior. The beds are very nice, with seemingly new mattresses. The bottom room has a double bed and a set of bunk beds (twin). There is also a loft with two more twin beds. The kitchen has the basics and a sink with running water. Nice living area with a table for eating, a couch and a couple chairs. No bathroom inside, but there is an outhouse close-by that was decent (I mean, it's an outhouse, don't expect beautiful, but it was fine). The campground was quiet and lovely at night! We grilled and had a fire, and then slept soundly in the comfy beds. It is a family campground so they strictly enforce quiet hours from 10pm-8am. They have a little store at the front of the campground, this is also where you can rent kayaks or canoes. The Snack Shack offers you average american flare, and of course lobster rolls! The lobster roll I had was $11.99 and well worth it! Overflowing with fresh lobster meat, lightly mayo-ed. I would go back just for the roll & the views! Awesome things: - Clean, well-maintained cabins - Cabins are large, can easily accomodate 6-8 people - AMAZING views - You can tour Wolfe's Neck Farm and see the cute animals (a must!) - Very close to Freeport downtown - Easy kayak launch, and great views on the water! - Snack Shack has cheap and good food options I really don't have anything negative to say. I just wouldn't come here if you're planing to rage or have a big party. There were 12 in our group (2 cabins) and we made sure to stay quiet and had no issues.

Stayed here last April, it was still so chilly at night that I was the only one that camped there then. It was so good though because I did solo-camping. The only sound I could hear was the one of nature such as wind, tide and animals. I spent about a week alone without hot water, but it was really a good experience. I wish I came back again in near future.

Despite the rain through our whole stay here, it was enjoyable! Nice campsites, showers were clean!!

Love this campground! This is my third stay here over the past 10 years, they have grown a lot, but I still love them. I have always been later in the season, so the campground was a lot more full then I was used to, but our campsite still felt private. I love that they have their own hiking trails and kayaks that you can rent right from their office. Also the fact that is is, essential a working farm with live stock and many activities going on is awesome. It's close to so many other things to do as well. All the employees are very friendly and I like that you can book online and view the sites before you book.

Nice clean bathrooms with free hot showers!

Wonderful campground on a working farm right on the Atlantic shore. Wish we could have stuck around longer, but we were just looking for a spot to camp for the night on our way down the east coast. They have terrific CLEAN SHOWERS and BATHROOMS, as well as a full cafe that serves lobster, pizza, ice cream, and vegetables from the farm. There is also a camp store for any amenities you need to buy. This place is just a short drive from downtown Freeport, but it feels very remote and private. They also rent kayaks.

we stayed at site 309 and it was amazing! perfect shady spot equidistant between two bathrooms and a short walk down to the water. we brought a cast iron grill plate to cook on and it was the perfect choice. the fire pits have metal grates that will swivel and sit above the fire but we didn't want to cook our food direct on that, so for cooking i'd recommend at least having some aluminum foil or a grill plate of sorts! we are already planning our next getaway to the campgrounds!

We have site 710. Can anyone tell me if this is a good one? It says obstructed ocean view but hoping not too obstructed.

My brother actually had the same site. It is right off the trail to the water. No beach area. The site has no flat area. So they had to pitch the tent on a slant.… Read more

We loved the fresh produce farm stand, and the snack bar was surprisingly great - included ingredients from the farm.

Welcome to Karenville. Population: Certainly not you!…read more I should have known how this was going to go when I went to check in with 2 friends and the ranger told me he had cancelled our 3-night reservations because of a storm coming in two days. I told him we just planned to stay the night so we would be gone long before any clouds rolled in, and that I had spoken with a very pleasant woman there the day before who suggested that very thing. He didn't want to hear it. When I asked why we weren't told about the cancellations, he said "we don't have to tell you." When I asked about a refund he snapped "we don't do refunds". He got livid when I said we weren't going to turn around and drive 3 hours home and said "we'll see" as he stormed out of the gate house. The guy at the gate house (not the ranger) was very pleasant and honestly tried to come up with a solution for everyone. He explained that we couldn't stay in the 3 sites we reserved because the ranger closed them, but he could put the 3 of us on a site near the water. It would be tight and not typically allowed, but at least we'd have a place to camp for the night. Right off the bat it was clear that this isn't the day-camper area. We were surrounded by RVs that had obviously been there all summer and people didn't smile or respond to our greetings as they walked by. They made no bones about not being happy with our presence. Before I get into our experience, let me say that we are all professionals in our 40s/50s with families. We set up tents, play a few camping games, grill up some burgers & steaks, have a few beers and call it a night. We've been camping together for 20 years and never once had management speak to us or a neighbor complain. It's about 3:30 by the time we have everything set up, so we decide to play bocce. Since we were sharing one site, space was very limited and we had to play in the walkway between the sites and the water, making sure not to interfere with anyone walking by. About a 1/2 hour in, a woman comes up and tells us we're "ruining her experience" and we need to stop playing. We tell her we're going to keep playing but we'll be aware of our volume, to which she storms off in a huff. Around 6:30 the ranger shows up with the woman and another man who complained about us cooking dinner. The ranger said that we were too loud and "being offensive". When I asked him what we did that was offensive, he kept repeating that we're "just offensive". Ironically, we were silently sitting around the fire when he came to yell at us - something he admitted. We asked what rules we were violating since it was more than 3 hours until Quiet Hours and he replied we weren't being "considerate". He said the next time he came by he'd have the police escort us out. We found out the next morning that he had already called the police before ever saying a word to us. Knowing the ranger and our neighbors were just waiting for Quiet Hours to drop the hammer, we went to bed at 9:45. Not exactly what we had planned, but we also didn't want to pack up & drive home in the middle of the night. The next day a woman came up to us near the bathrooms and stuck her finger in our faces screaming at us that we're "f*cking morons" and that we had "tortured that poor old lady". This was in front of a ranger, who evidently didn't consider that offensive.

My wife…read moreand I had our friend's daughter with us for the weekend, so we took her camping at Blueberry Pond Campground in Pownal, Maine. Pros: - Connie (owner?) was very sweet on the phone when booking and when we checked in. - Wooded, private sites with plenty of space for a tent, car, chairs, etc. - Tent site #12 was right next to a big field which we ended up having exclusive use of for frisbee and nigh sky watching - There's a pool (kids love pools) - 5 min drive to Bradbury Mountain State Park - 35 minutes from Portland - Clean (bathrooms, tent site, general campground) - Great for families and kids; very SAFE location and overall feeling Eh's: - There are many RV sites... probably more than tent sites, which adds a different vibe to the place if you're tenting. - There were many dogs at the RV sites... all yapping and barking all the time - RV people get up and start having a rollicking good time very early (and we were up at 730am!) Does this make it seem like I'm anti-RV camping? I'm not, I don't think... Cons: - "Quiet hours of 10pm - 8am strictly enforced!!" ... NOT SO MUCH. There were a few other families with kids near us, and it was great when everything got quiet around 9pm (when our young friend was tuckering out). Not great when around 10pm a car pulled in joining a tent site across the way and made lots of noise until 3am. 3AM is a terrible time to finally get to rest when you're with kids all day. Especially when the RV'ers wake you up at the sound of the rooster. - The "noisemakers" included a member of the staff/ daughter/ relative of the owners. We saw her working when we checked in, and then later when she brought her light-up hula-hoops to the site nearby. Her late night light show kept our tent feeling like a wooded rave for a few hours. - Public shaming of driving 10 MPH. oops! The MPH for the campground is 5. We went to the store after setting up our tent, and upon returning were driving too fast. As we slowed (approaching the stop sign at the office) a man (owner?) jumped out in front of us with his hand out and hollered "5 miles per hour!!!!!" in front of all the folks he was sitting on the lawn with. (from them: "where are they going?" "campsite 12!"). We came to a full stop, gave a thumbs up, and continued to our tent site at 3 MPH just to be safe. I'm sure this is my "stuff" but it made me feel weird for a little while....weird enough to include on this review I guess! Overall: I would probably come back, but asking young camping ravers to "please keep it down" at 230am sucks, so that leaves a sour taste. There's always a risk of loud neighbors when you share a wooded bedroom with dozens of campers, so the pros outweigh the cons here. Hopefully if we do come back, I'll remember to not use such a lead foot when driving. Again, Connie was a gem.

And as we stretched out on the rocks enjoying our picnic in the the warm sun, taking in the view of what seemed to be endless forests, bodies of water, and islands, we couldn't have agreed more." A decade later this is still true. If you're looking for an easygoing, very accessible way to go hiking and get some fresh air while wandering Maine's woods, take in the changing leaves of autumn or the abundance of blossoms and wildflowers in the spring, Bradbury - located just thirty minutes from Portland - is hard to beat. According to their website, Bradbury Mountain State Park was one of the original five state parks in the state of Maine, acquired by the Federal government in 1939. The mountain is open year round from 9am until sunset and offers a variety of hiking trails that range from very, very easy ("wide gradual ascents", "well packed and fairly flat") to slightly more challenging ("steepest ascent, but not difficult to hike", "areas with sharp turns"), from .2 miles to 1.5 miles (or more if you want to build your own adventure here - which is very easy to do because this state park's trails are now abundantly well marked; expect lots of maps throughout to let you know where you are AND lots of wooden signs pointing you in the right direction). You could easily do it all in one half day or break up your walk and come back another time, especially considering it's an easy, convenient mountain with an elevation of just 485 feet. Dogs are allowed on leashes, horses are allowed on certain trails. There are bathrooms. You can check out an old cattle pound. Explore for geocaches. It's a cute little mountain, and I'm so happy it's right in (proverbial) our backyard.

The tent & cabin were both very clean & comfortable. The campground community bath house (when staying in a tent or cabin w/out bathroom) was also kept clean. The cabins could use a bit more privacy - all the huge, gorgeous, picturesque windows are problematic as (particularly in the winter) there's several other cabins w/full view into your windows. It would be nice if it was more of a private / woods view than looking into other cabins. That said, my daughter & I enjoyed our time and have been repeat customers. Would give it 4.5 stars (Yelp doesn't give half star option, but I needed to account for the lack of privacy in several of the cabins in the area we were in.). I was worried the walking might be a lot for the little guy but he didn't complain not once. It was explorative and interesting. Keep in mind, on hot days I bet you feel it! Bring sunblock, wear hats, closed toed shoes are best and water. Also, the big blue slide in the rear of the desert shoots little ones out like a cannon! I thought he broke his arm but he was ok!
