Hermit Island Campgrounds isn't for a quick getaway from the city (nyc). That ish is mad far! ...but it's worth it, if you come prepared. All the great camp sites tend to be for week long reservations only, and there's pretty much nothing else out there but the campgrounds. Pros: - varied camp sites with privacy and a few ocean front locations - recommended beaches: sand dollar beach is smaller with finer sand and a bit more private than sand dune beach which is bigger and accessible off a path through the campsites; it has the better view, but not as nice shore - you can rent kayaks, canoes, and boats from the Kelp Shed (or a 3rd party that you can coordinate through the Kelp Shed) - clean(ish) bathrooms and showers - for the more civilized, there's a snack bar at Kelp Shed - friendly, young reception staff - no cell reception Cons: - mosquitos - mosquitos - more mosquitos - expensive, but well-stocked store - no cell reception - effing mosquitos As I mentioned, there are no veryyy close gas stations or grocery stores, so pick up supplies in Bath. Tip: Take the advice of the folks' at the Kelp Shed front desk with a grain of salt. They've categorized the sites as "value," "choice", "prime", and "ocean prime". --However, the range of sites even within each category can be dramatic. Drive/walk around and checkout sites yourself.

    Ocean prime spot!

Gorgeous campground. Definitely pay more for an Ocean Prime spot if you can. Most of the sites are quite private and they all allow various types of camping equipment - some allow pop-up campers, some are only for tents. It's nice and quiet - the rules prevent loud music blaring or huge groups of drunken friends. Great little hikes and Popham Beach is very nearby and worth a trip. The camp store has basic camp food, batteries, ice, camp supplies, and fire wood. However, the wood we purchased there was expensive, but it had not been cured and wouldn't burn! We had another bundle from the roadside stand up the road and it worked perfectly. They have a few activities for kids, a nice main hall in case of inclement weather, very helpful staff and overall good bathrooms.

Perfect sunset at Head Beach in Hermit Island

We booked this trip last minute since we had originally planned to go to Maryland but the weather called for thunderstorms, so we decided to come to Maine! What an awesome experience. We absolutely loved everything about it! The people at the campground were all so helpful and cordial. The campground was clean, well kept, safe and gorgeous. All the other reviews hit it right on too. Can't say one bad thing about it. We bought fresh Lobster at the store at the campground and cooked ourselves, it was delicious. We walked around the entire island and there is not a bad site, they are all great! We prefer the beach so we stay close to the beach and watch the sunset, amazing view. We are coming back next years and brining our kids.

You can't reserve online, or pick your site, communication is minimal, the campground needs lots of attention. This place has great potential. It's on the water and there is a really cool spot by some big boulders. But the bath houses are terrible. There are two bath houses and at Bath house 1 - There were nails through the space where a pad lock goes, the floor feels like it is failing in on the porch surround, the 2 shower rooms are dark and dingy with peeling painted concrete floors. We didn't see the shower room at Bath house 2 because it was always occupied since there is only one shower in this building for a lot of tent sites. There are no mirrors in the bathrooms (there are in the shower rooms) . The property needs some TLC - landscape, mowing and trash pick up. There are cluttered spots of old junk laying around. It would be a great place to start a campground.

The staff is super friendly and the store sells ice and other necessities. Every RV spot has a great ocean view and a personal trash bin that campground staff picks up everyday. No fault of the campground obviously but it was abnormally hot when we visited for 3 nights. The horseflies were very intense and were hard to get away from without being in the RV. The area is very tidal and you can walk very far out at low tide. It's a fun campground in a unique setting. Highly recommend but be prepared for all types of weather.

The view is breath taking, however....the owner is a complete ass. He is unfriendly, unpleasant and all he cares about is money. In the 15 years we simply where not able to make friends with him because he is just not nice. The staff has been fine all these years, but not Steve. We have had a couple incidents over the years, one, my husband hit a $4 fiberglass driveway marker with our camper,we were backing out and he simple didn't see it, we stopped at the office to let Steve know and to offer to pay for it. He through an absolute fit. We gave him $10 and apologized and he was just terrible about it. We almost didn't return the following year but decided that we loved our site so much that we would just deal with it. The next incident, another campers car rolled down the drive way and crashed into the trees right next to our camper...just a few feet from where my children were playing. It was pretty scary....luckily everyone was ok....the owner never even checked on us. The last incident was about 2 years ago, Steve came down and scolded us for laughing too loud at 9 pm at night. Said we needed to quiet it down. I assure you we were not being loud or disrespectful....this is just how the owner is. This year when I tried to book our site for next year, I was told that the ocean sites were all going seasonal and we were out of luck. No warning, no apology, no nothing. So after 15 years of staying at Grays, all of our loyalty and all of the referrals and people we have sent there...we are done . Just like that. So for those of you thinking about Grays, it is beautiful, it is expensive, ( Steve charges for every little thing) and the owner is an ASS!!
