The view from tent site 10A

I stayed at Chewonki Campground very recently towards the end of the season, after all of the kids had gone back to school. Well, let me tel you, this place is fantastic. The owners are incredibly friendly, and the grounds are gorgeous. Their website features photos of specific campsites, which was why I chose it. I was looking for a tent site that wasn't crammed together like parking spaces, and I got it. My site was massive to say the least, and completely surrounded on 2 sides by trees, and the front side by a beautiful water view. It made for quite a trek to the restrooms, but I'd rather do that for a bit of privacy. The hookup sites are a little more conventional as far as the space goes, but they're also more central and towards the top of the hill, affording a great view of the water as well. The only cons are that at night you can hear the traffic on Route 1, but I'm sure that's true for most campgrounds. Secondly, it's near the end of the runway for the Wiscasset airport, so once in a while a small plane flies overhead during the day. As an aviation enthusiast, I didn't mind, and I'm sure kids would love it. This is absolutely my favorite campground now, and I'm sure I'll return in the future. Anyone looking for a place that gives some more space, privacy, and even grass should definitely go to Chewonki.

Nice campground. Most sites are rather large. Everything was clean and well maintained. Main complaint was that there was no paper towels or way to dry hands in the restroom. You do have to pay to shower, but 8 minutes for a quarter gives you plenty of time, for the price per night I don't think one should have to pay.

Because we were very busy, we did not get a chance to take advantage of the amenities (salt water pool, canoe rental, etc).

Since guests were asked to respect the speed limit, it afforded people the opportunity to slow down in the campground, and be respectful of other guests. It has to start somewhere. Our site was next to the bathrooms which were very well kept. The trash was never overflowing, the toilets were clean, and the showers were in a decent state. I also enjoyed the constant music which flowed pleasantly into the bathrooms as well. I enjoyed the access to the little store as well. It had most, if not all of one's camping needs provided. Access to ice, firewood, and s'mores supplies, proved quite convenient. One evening, a woman who ran the campground, came over from her camper to take care of me in the store. She did so quite happily, and we shared a few laughs. In all, SF is in a good location, it had all of the necessary amenities, and was well kept. I'd stay again, but I might be getting too old to sleep on an air mattress in a tent. Its location to Camden, Freeport, Boothbay, and obviously Pemaquid Point Lighthouse, were advantageous too. Keep up the good work!

Apparently that site was supposed to be chained off & not reserved, & we were woken up to a bit of the older man's temper, as he thought we took the chain down to enter. Later on, after we decided to just leave & was packing up, he realized the construction crew had failed to replace the chain, thus leaving us to think it was available. He came & apologized, & let us stay on the site, just asked us to move the car to avoid a flat tire, which we actually ended up in the place he asked us to park. We rated 4 stars for the inappropriate assumption & temper but aside from that, they had showers (which you need quarters for by the way), & all the amenities you might expect, & the mama of the property was an absolute sweetheart but we didn't get to actually meet her, unfortunately. There's also a general store with everything's out might need & grocery store with all food pickin' needs just about 5-10 minutes down the road from the entrance. It's also within walking distance to the beach (that's not pet friendly btw) but pets are welcome within a reasonable driving distance to other parts of the beach.

So, I penned my arrival time, parking slot and attached the fee and slipped it through the mail slot. The second day, the spring thunder was rolling across the sky, filling all the upper and lower spaces with it's rumblings, then a moment of faded distance, followed by a final wrathful roar coming from behind the clouds. For you see, more and more - rightly or wrongly, I'm developing my desire to be alone with the sights and sounds of nature. From thunder clap to the little water crystals of mornings first dew, it all makes me feel a special way. As if nature is harmonizing within the depths of my souls mood. I'll sit for hours watching nature lay before me in a hush and there is no sense of movements, but I feel the flow of vital natural energy that no humans can disturb. It's here, below the trees sitting upon the grass which seems to offer soft words of comfort and sympathy. And now, in these moments - any human that might pierce suddenly upon my natural mood, seems to effect me greatly. Because one bad thought - problems in NYC, etc - and my souls tranquility is thrown into confusion.
