Rather than argue, she showed him why it wasn't and then we politely thanked him and walked away. As we left, my friend immediately expressed how uncomfortable and singled out the interaction made her feel. Approximately two minutes later, the same gentleman came outside and told us he would make an exception "this time" because we seemed like nice people. That statement only made the situation more insulting. If the dress code was truly the issue, what suddenly changed? And why did whether we seemed like "nice people" determine if we were welcome? Under normal circumstances, we would have taken our business elsewhere. However, my friend had driven an hour specifically to enjoy one of her favorite restaurants, and it was already 9:30 p.m. What should have been an enjoyable evening turned into an uncomfortable experience that affected the entire night between her and I and ultimately caused it to end early. I won't speculate about the reasoning behind our treatment, but I will say that what we experienced, especially compared with other guests we observed, left us questioning whether the "dress code" was being truly the reason we were disrespected.
