I had a great experience at Plaza Optical Center. They were really accommodating and the doctor was extremely attentive and thoughtful throughout the process - it's been a few years since I got a contact lens exam and I felt confident leaving this appointment in the prescription I received. They were extremely busy, but the wait wasn't too bad. When I was there, there were a few non-native English speakers and an elderly man. The staff was really accommodating and supportive and ensured folks were taken care of. I saw someone posted here about an experience where their in-network benefits weren't incorporated - I did not experience this and had a very smooth payment process where they had already checked my insurance and confirmed my benefits and copay. I would not recommend this place. I am in network with their practice, and first they falsely quoted me a very high price for a routine eye exam. After spending 30 minutes going back and forth, they "realized" their error and reduced it to the standard amount. After that, they quoted $150 for a routine contact lens exam, which originally they had said was included for free with my insurance. Lens crafters charges $60 for the same contact lenses exam for reference. After spending 45 minutes on insurance issues, I was unable to even get the eye exam. The staff here needs to go through some serious customer service training. They're rude and look miserable. I accompanied my mom here for some new lenses and the staff was very dismissive. It seemed as though we were bothering them. To the owners, you are providing a service to the community. This is the go to spot for almost every resident whose been living in the neighborhood before gentrification. Please update your eyewear selection. Not everyone can afford designer frames and your affordable/Medicaid selection is a joke. The frames are dirty. Majority are children sizes. Just horrible. Do better. read more

Just had the most wonderful experience with them! i'm a new client and on medicaid and i booked on zocdoc during off hours but my appointment wasn't confirmed yet. the doctor had been out sick and the office was very busy but Heather and Boris worked hard to have me seen even though I didn't have an official appointment and they were fully booked. Someone no showed and they got me right in! the doctor was a good listener and fast and thorough. Heather helped me navigate what was covered and not covered by my insurance so I could make the choice that was right for me. And Boris helped me look for just the right frames- he gives great advice! I'm glad to have such a good first experience as I've had some bad luck finding good doctors in the past. The level of incompetence I experienced here in the last year cannot be understated. The people failed at every step of the way to complete one single order. Last February I went in for my exam to order contacts. I updated information at the beginning as you do since I had moved from Brooklyn to Astoria. They put in an order for my contacts. A couple weeks later they call me to tell me my pickup is ready. I go pick it up and it's only one eye. The other eye is on back order. Why would I need to pick up an order for one eye? So I ask them if they can just ship it to me when it's ready so I don't keep making the trip. They say sure. For 10 bucks. I pay and leave. A month later in March I call them to check the status of my order. I'm told it's still on back order. I call beginning of April. Still on back order I'm told. I call in May and ask if they're actually checking. Someone actually checks the shipping from the order and tells me it was delivered in March. I get some apologies and they say they'll put in a new order. June rolls around and I want to order glasses so I email them for my prescription. In the email I solve a big piece of this puzzle. They never updated my information. They were shipping them to my old apartment. Still doesn't explain why for months they just would tell me it was on back order though. I call again to explain this. I get a big apology and a promise to reorder and have it shipped with an extra box to apologize. I was hoping this would arrive before my trip abroad June 28th. Silly me hoping that I'd have contacts for a trip in the summer that I ordered in February. That did not happen. Instead I get an email June 30th telling me that my contacts are available for pick up again. Not delivered to the correct address. I again will have to pick them up when I am stateside. When I get back I eventually find my way to pick up my contacts. Instead of picking up my box and extra box I am holding in my hand a pair of trial lenses. So I explain this whole mess and they put in an order again for what I asked to be delivered. Eventually I get another email saying they are available for pick up. So I have to actually work and have a life so there are some gaps between me living and babysitting people who can't get one order correct. Yesterday I went one last time and picked up an order of four left eye and 4 right eye which is still not correct. So now I have four of one eye and a whole bunch of another. At this point I give up. I will go elsewhere and post this to vent and let anyone know that they are not diligent people UPDATE: As an update I was told that the initial address was correct and they insisted that they did everything they could to rectify the situation. They provided a billing invoice which does in fact have the correct address. Of course that does, how else would I pay by card. Never mind my emailed prescription still had the incorrect address. When I asked for shipping verification they failed to do so. They also glossed over the fact that for months they told me they were on back order even after their supposed delivery. They ignored the moronic system calling someone to tell them to pick up half an order in the first place. They insist that the were correct in the mailing yet each time i have gone in to pick up contacts they were supposed to be mailed in the first place. They suggested as well that I now have the correct order. Which means they clearly didn't read the review through. Let me be clear. in my original order I was missing one eye. What I picked up was four Right and four left. So no it is still not correct and the people there cannot be trusted to do anything correctly. That same day I had the correspondence I received a call to schedule an eye exam. I have received 3 calls today while teaching from them as well. I am not complaining to get free orders. I wrote what I wrote so others know about the sheer incompetence and dismissal of a complaint. I have no interest in them trying to rectify the situation. I will not be returning for an eye exam or any other service. read more

I'm speaking to my personal experience here-- I'm not sure why this place has bad reviews, which is why I'm inclined to write this. I felt the doctor and workers here go above and beyond to give personalized care. They are very responsive and nice to work with. My old contact prescription called for contacts that were discontinued. I saw the team here do everything they can to get me the same brand because it's one that I am comfortable with. After finding out it's simply impossible to get the contacts I wanted, the doctor called up the contact manufacturer and made sure he can get me one that is essentially the same. All in all, my experience here was super positive; people were nice and did everything they can to make sure I got the contacts I need. read more

I had my regular annual appointment but this time I had insurance. I called before and made sure they took it. I had my contact lens exam and the doctor told me my rx hadnt changed. Months later, it's time for me to order contacts and so I email them for the copy of my rx. Now they are trying to gaslight me and say that I never had my contact lenses checked and I didnt pay for it. I know that I did have my exam but apparently it was a gigantic waste of my time because of their record keeping. They never charged me or made me aware that I would still owe 100 bucks. They need to get their shiz together. Go somewhere more organized. read more

My family have been patients at Plaza Optical Center for several years by now. We always get superb service. We get seen quick, no wait time, and it's is always a pleasure to browse through their countless eye glasses frames and hear about innovations in the spectacle lenses world. I am happy with prices, as I am the one who has to take care of that aspect. Haha. We got an amazing deal on sunglasses package for 3 of us, before our last vacation to Caribbeans. The doctor was good and performed a thorough exam but the reception service was very poor. Made me wait outside in the middle of the afternoon in August as they were full inside and were not able to accommodate me. Although the wait was not too long as I showed my dissatisfaction, the attitude was very poor and after getting there asked me if I wanted to re schedule, if waiting outside was not an option. I went there few times, it is the only place in my neighborhood that accept my insurance, although it is Oxford and suppose to be one of the best. One time I wanted to check if I had retina degeneration and the doctor made me come back 2 times, I had to pay $40 copay twice, just to tell me that I had to go to another doctor because he was not sure if I had it or not, he was not an expert in retina degeneration. But at least the staff was very nice. Quite expensive place though, for a pair of plain lenses without any coating, costs was $170 without the frame and it took long time to get my glasses read more

This optical should be closed. They do not have a good customer service. They do not respect or the elderly and senior citizens. If you miss an appointment by a few minutes, do not not accomodate for trasnportation issues nor health needs and make you have another appointment for another time. Very bad management when it comes to accountability and service to the cummunity. My mom will no longer be using this optical anymore. It took her two hours to get there, with a walker and and medical issues and they refussed to see her. She has been a loyal customer for more than 30 years. This place needs a new staff. If you ask the optician for your PD, then be prepared for 10-minutes of his personal opinion on why online eyeglass retailers are the devil, why he is the best, and why I had better not be using an online retailer and coming to him for a prescription update. Keep in mind this angry rant will be delivered in the confines of the small, dark room where they determine your prescription. It will feel a bit like a trip to a used car dealership. Also, be prepared for him to NOT give you your PD unless you are buying glasses at his shop. This optician and his shop confirmed just how big of a threat retailers like Warby Parker are. I was looking for a last minute appointment to renew my contact lens and glasses prescription and I found this gem. I was able to book same day and my experience from start to finish was excellent. The staff was very friendly, there was little to no wait (despite my being a new patient which typically can take a while for you to get registered at other offices), and Dr. Shah was a pleasure to be around. She seems young and cool, and is obviously extremely knowledgeable. She takes the time to really listen to your concerns/vision needs to make sure she's offering the right prescription update and eye-care regimen that you need. After meeting with her, I was offered sample contact lenses to hold me over for a little while, they price matched what I was previously paying at 1-800Contacts for a 3 month supply, and included shipment to my home. I was told to arrive at least 15 minutes early as I was a new patient. I waited outside for over 20 minutes on a 90 degree day to be let in. When I was finally let in, I was told the doctor was not in yet, even though this was almost 10 minutes after my appointment was supposed to begin. I asked to use the restroom and was told that I could not due to "construction." You mean to tell me that the people who work here don't use the restroom all day? I wasn't about to wait an indeterminate amount of time to be seen while urgently needing a restroom. Terrible customer service. read more

So the end of the story is that of course he was trying to sell me a 200$ pair of glasses which he believed was a great deal!! Bro do you know which is a good deal?? The other optician I went to, where I spent just 69$ buying the same glasses you tried to sell me for 200$!! And guess what Victor?? The lenses are fully covered by the insurance. I really hope the manager or the owner of this place will be kind enough to invite me and discuss about the whole thing happened and apologize!! Because between 200$ and 69$ there is a huge difference! And it is EXTREMELY important that he ( Victor) stops lying abt what insurance covers or not, considering he didn't even call my insurance to make sure what my plan includes. Shame on you bro!! I love the doctor here. he's totally cute. the place is slightly ghetto - has been in business forever in this spot - and along with the neighborhood charm - you get a lot of attitude from the staff who don't feel like explaining anything to their customers. They act like I am some huge problem customer because I ask questions! Maybe their usual clientele doesn't care or don't have other options, but I have been to many other eye doctors who go about things very differently, and don't get impatient or easily miffed. They also charge comparative prices to much nicer (sorry, it's true) places in Manhattan, and mark up their orders quite a bit - enough that I had to cancel my last order, which as you can imagine was met with a lot of resistance, guilt-tripping and finally a dismissal - leaving me feeling unwelcome as a customer though I've been going there for over four years! read more

Was seen three weeks ago for eye exam and to get new pair of glasses. I was told it takes two days for my glasses to be ready. I've called plenty of times and it's either no answer or when they do finally pick up, it's the same excuse. "Lab are still working on it, it will be ready real soon. I'll call you when they're ready, blah blah blah" . The most I ever waited for a pair of glasses in 7 days. I will be going in office myself on Monday to see what's really going on. Horrible place. I've worn glasses since the age of 5, I'm in my late 40's and never had such horrible service. The older gentleman that measures you for glasses kind of conned me into getting an extra pair of glasses that I really didn't need. He promised I would have them in a week. 2 1/2 weeks later and they still were not done. When I went to finally pick them up, as soon as I went to try them on, the glass fell off. Unfortunately, I can't give this place a negative star. My 78 year old mother had an appointment yesterday and was treated with the outmost disrespect. Her mistake was getting there an 1 hour early to her scheduled appointment. After waiting for almost an hour, Tatiana who works there, proceeded to cancel her appointment, "just because she could", according to Tatiana my 78 year old mother disrespected her. The nerve, a 78 year woman asking "how much longer do I have to wait?" after sitting out on the curb for an 1 hour! Tatiana, I wonder if your boss knows this is how you treat his patients, seniors at that? I can't comment on how good the doctor(s) are because she was denied service. We live in a democracy, we should treat each other with kindness, and care for our elders. I encourage everyone to do their due diligence before going to this optical center. I've been going here since I was in Middle School. I am now a college student and I don't really like it. Before, it was what I consider a 'Walk-in' office. Now, you need an appointment and the doctor only comes in for 3 hrs a day? It's Not helpful, nor useful.
