They RUINED our Christmas tradition!!!!! For over 40 years our family has enjoyed the petit fours and cakes for our Christmas celebration. However, three years ago we noticed the quality of the product had changed. We stopped getting the cake and instead went to Publix Bakery. This year, the petit fours were the final straw. So I like to take treats when I go to my in-laws. I go to a few places for baked good. These are my favorite treated at plaza. If you were going to get one item you have to get the T.V. Bar. It is chocolate cake with a cream top covers in chocolate. It is always a hit. I got a few of their cute cookies, snowman, ginger breadman ect... I don't really care for them. Not much flavor and I don't like hard cookies They had fresh cinnamon buns come out when I was there and they were Oh so GOOD!!! Huge!!! I could have shared with a friend but I managed to eat it all by myself The staff is helpful and fast and I like the boxes they put your treats in Quality sweets and the pricing fits . Absolutely horrible bakery. I had planned to use Plaza for my wedding cake as I grew up going to the bakery at their location off of Laskin Rd. After multiple emails and phone calls with Cristal reviewing that our cake will be confetti with vanilla frosting, we arrive to the tasting with a generic sample platter and confetti isn't even an option. I flew back home to attend this tasting for nothing to be presented remotely close to what we had discussed. The cupcakes were still hot and the icing was sliding off. The petit fours were extremely dry and I could barely swallow them. Not only was Cristal unapologetic, she took no ownership or accountability for the lack of preparation for our WEDDING cake tasting saying "confetti is vanilla just with sprinkles" instead of having the samples to try like we reviewed on the phone. Upon the disastrous tasting I asked for a refund of my $700 deposit - I never signed a contract or saw anywhere in writing it was a non refundable deposit, and the Cristal refuses to give a refund. I would NEVER recommend this bakery to anyone especially not for a wedding cake. Not only is it a terrible product, but also terrible service. Hopefully they make a contract for any future brides that dare to use them for their cake! read more

I'm sorry but this is unacceptable. I paid 85.00 for a July 4th themed pregnancy announcement cake. 1/2 sheet, 1/2 yellow, 1/2 chocolate. Paid extra to have them "decorate" it and write "red white and DUE, November 2022". I said just draw some rockets and fireworks on there, make it look July 4th themed and leave space for an ultra sound picture. This is what I got. I LITERALLY could have gotten a better decorated sheet cake out of a Walmart case and had them write that on there for free for 1/4 of the price. Too late to argue because the party is tomorrow. To make a very long story short Plaza Bakery is no where near as good as the original owners. My best friend grew up there so she knew them and her family frequented the store. Again I'm making a long story short and will never go there again. The manager is rude one of the reasons they only have 3 1/2 stars. They made double the money on my order because they messed up my order. They refused to give me a refund. They only gave me a store credit however I live 5 hours away. We were there on vacation for the first time. We won't be back there at any time. They know we lived 5 hours away so they know we'll never get to collect on that store credit. Very bad business. If I could give them a zero I would therefore had to give them 1 star. I used to run 6 stores as a district manager so I know what it takes to run a successful business. The young lady working up front was very polite and professional. They didn't have a particular donut that I wanted. She went out of her way to customize a doughnut for me. New owners are rude and unaccommodating. The product is awful and the decorating on their cakes look like a 5 year did it. This is definitely a shame that this bakery for many years had a great reputation and now it has truly gone down hill since it was taken over. We chose Plaza Bakery because they were the only bakery that told us they could do a cake with the New Orleans Saints emblem on the cake. All in all the cake we got for our son's birthday tasted ok. It wasn't great but it wasn't bad either. As far as the texture it was a nice light cake and everyone enjoyed it. My only complaint is that I felt the icing was a little thick for myself. I'd been going to Plaza for their Petit Fours and ribbon cakes for decades (since the 80's). Sadly, when they went under new ownership a few years back, the texture and flavor changed. I was so sad and hadn't been back for years. Well, I finally tried them again last week on a whim and they are back!! A lady was asking for her money back on a cake she'd had made that had messed up icing (looked like perhaps she had messed it up in transit and/or after she got it home but who am I to judge). There were some cupcakes and cookies and brownies in the glass case that looked decent but I didn't buy or try anything. Nothing in here was gourmet-looking and the decorations weren't first-rate. I've been very frustrated with them since the new owners took over. My daughter is getting married and has been trying to get them to contact her regarding what she wants. They keep promising to call her when I talk l to them, but never call her. They said they wouldn't be able to do part of what she wants, however, when I said she's open to negotiating the cake, they still ignore her. We bought a six inch previously frozen cake that turned out very stale. Sharp knife would not cut the bottom or top layer. When we returned to the store the clerk advised us the owner would only allow us a 50% refund. I made a Yelp account just to write this review. On 12/17 I had messaged Plaza Bakery on doing a wedding cake consultation. They emailed me back saying they were available for the weekend of the wedding and asked that I send pictures and ideas, which I did. Nearly a month later I reached back out to them after I didn't hear anything further. I figured with Christmas and New Years people have lives, too, but when they hadn't responded by the second week of January I would message them back. I got the "sorry, it was going to spam" even though we had communicated via email previously, but maybe it did. We set up to meet on January 16th to discuss everything at 11am. I was to call an hour before just to make sure we're still good. When I called this morning at 10:05, the front desk girl had no idea what was going on. I asked her if it would be better to reschedule because it would be a waste of time for everyone to attend a meeting where they were unprepared. She went into the back to see how to handle it, and apparently the lady we had been corresponding with called out today. The other cake decorator was apparently swamped picking up her slack, and was completely left in the dark. I'm glad I called before we showed up and wasted our time, but severely disappointed I had to be responsible for following up with them, and that they would essentially cancel our meeting without any notice. The poor girl at the front had no idea, so it's not her fault. But you would think someone would have said "by the way, these people have an appointment at 11," and if the girl making the appointment was going to call out tell her coworkers that she would have to cancel her consultation that was scheduled. I had heard they've gone downhill in recent years, but had yet to experience it first hand. We haven't been to Plaza in a while and I was shocked at the difference in quality. We purchased the icing dot cookies and the butter cookies. Not only was the texture unappetizing but they tasted soapy. My husband and I were scrambling for something to drink to wash the taste out of our mouths. Thankfully, I had some Altoids. I was in there a few weeks ago and saw some adorable ones in the case; when I inquired about them, the girl behind the counter( she NEVER took her sunglasses off), said "you didn't see them here". Plaza was the go-to fresh bakery in the Hilltop section of Virginia Beach for many years, and is still a great spot for wonderful cookies, sweet rolls, freshly made pies and a limited selection of basic breads and dinner rolls. But the bakery has not followed the trend toward fancifully decorated cakes (they try, but their heart isn't really in it) and exotic European breads and sweets so common at many of its Beach competitors, and, as a result, these days they've been left a little behind some of the fancier bakeries along Laskin Road or Va Beach Blvd. If you're looking for a work of art for your next birthday cake, and want to spend $100+ for the cake, Plaza probably isn't your spot. But if you're just looking for a sugar fix with some great fresh cinnamon rolls (with raisins!), super-gooey Danish, or a wonderful mincemeat pie at Thanksgiving, by all means stop into Plaza, and experience baked goods like they were made before the arrival of The Cake Boss. read more

I ordered a sheet cake for my daughter's graduation, and asked for them to decorate it with Blue and yellow roses for a Sentara graduation, she graduated with her BSN, and when my husband picked it up, it looked like a 2 yr old decorated it. I've ordered shower cakes from here and they are always beautiful and delicious. Their almond flavor cake is AmAzInG!!!! They will pretty much design your cake to your specifications. I had a small two-tier baby cake made with pale blue fondant and white polka dots. Unfortunately, the only drawback was I wasn't crazy about their ideas (they have a picture book that you can flip through). I had to search on the Internet and recommend something specific to them. I've made my own special occasion cakes for years, so I'm admittedly a cake snob. Bleh, I hate cheap sheet cakes (the kind you get in a grocery store or from a wholesale club). You can taste the additives and preservatives and there's nothing special about them. You are ordering a cake for a special occassion, so make it special and get it from Plaza Bakery instead. The cost is a little higher but it's totally worth it. And it's not way over-priced by any means. The cost is just higher because you are getting custom work. Plaza Bakery also has individual desserts for sale in a bakery case. I've never had a chance to try any of them, but they look very tempting. read more

I was very dissatisfied with the decoration on the cake , see I was expecting it to be decorated nicely for young adult , instead it looked like it was made for seven-year-old.
