Went here the other day. This place had been my go to spot for anything from birthdays to celebrations. So I am saddened to have to write this negative review. I was served what looked like shrimp in my food. As someone who is highly allergic I was very concerned. What's more is that the waitress and manager didn't handle this well at all. The manager couldn't even be bothered to come to our table and the waitress neglected our table after the incident. The health department has been notified. Please be careful if you dine here still. Plaza Azteca brings the vibes and is an exciting place to dine. The staff is very friendly! They even have a robot that delivers your food and mariachi music that plays along with it. The menu is pretty large, I would say slightly overwhelming. I went too simple and got shrimp tacos with fish taco toppings (spicy aloli & cabbage) I thought they overall lacked flavor and excitment. The complimentary chips and and salsa and margaritas were delicious. Next time I will be getting the table side guacamole! The food was good but I can't give a score higher than 3 stars because the service was lacking. I was just there this past Friday and our waitress wasn't very kind to one of our guests and basically rushed our group from the table. On top of that she rarely checked on us and had left empty plates and chips and salsa on the table for a while. Despite the lack in service, the food was tasty. I tried the sweet plantains with sour cream and queso fresco and enjoyed that (hard to go wrong with that). I also tried the guac and chips and birria tacos and enjoyed those as well. The margarita I had was very fruity and strong in melon flavor which I didn't love but it was decorated nicely with fruits. I will say that I was shocked to learn that this restaurant doesn't sell pitchers of margaritas. I think for big parties that would be a better option than paying $20 for each drink as you're likely not willing to order more than 1-2. What I will say that I thought was great is that they allowed everyone to get separate checks. As a party of 7 it made the process faster and seamless. I'd say this location is nice for a group hangout but don't expect much as far as service as it was lacking. read more

I had the House margarita which was too sweet; disappointed that they only do the House in the regular size because my husband's jumbo spicy marg was much better. Food was pretty good. Service was average, prices a little high but the presentation and flavors were enjoyable. We would come again on our way to the beach but wouldn't drive out of our way to come eat. Super cute, well decorated, and not crazy loud. We had a tia rosa (cocktail), piña colada, salmon bowl, and al la carte chicken enchilada with queso blanco sauce, finishing with a tres leches cake slice. Tia rosa was beautifully presented, full bodied with great flavor. Piña Colada was disappointing because it was chunky, icy, and hard to drink through a straw which is always kind of annoying. Salmon bowl was a good sized portion although it was a little on the salty side (to be expected with teriyaki) and could use a little more texture or crunch so overall 8/10. Enchilada had a fresh tortilla, good amount of meat, and great flavor in the queso blanco 9/10 just needed a lime to be perfect. Tres Leches cake had great portion size, flavor and presentation with some strawberry in the middle layer. Just the right amount of moisture not too soggy. Probably top 3 I've ever had, definitely one of the best for the area. Overall enjoyable experience and happy to see some effort in presentation and class coming to the area. The chips and salsa came quick, we really enjoyed the smoky salsa that just a little kick to it. My family took me out to celebrate my birthday and I'll tell you the service was terrible like the wait time for the food. When the food arrived it was cold and not up to expectations. We ask for extra napkins, drinks etc. and was never brought. When the waitress finally came back she ask was there anything else wanted at the table. My response was "The napkins and the drinks which was ask for". I just said no and please bring the check. In the mood for some guacamole and decided to visit the recently opened Plaza Azteca. The restaurant is very spacious. The tables are spread out nicely so you have plenty of room to enjoy your dining experience. I was served chips and salsa as soon as I was seated. The chips were hot and the salsa had the perfect amount of heat. I ordered the table side guacamole and it was pretty tasty. I just wanted to add a little more salt. I also ordered the barria tacos. The tacos were not as crispy but the flavors were on point. The tacos were served with a beef soup broth that was flavorful. There were so many things on the menu I would try I will definitely be back. The restaurant is not currently serving alcohol. OMG! I've been to Mexico several times and this is the only place in DE that serves authentic Mexican street food taco.

To say that I was disappointed with Plaza Azteca is an understatement. The only reason I gave it 1 star is because I couldn't do a review without giving any stars. The one star is for the service as our waiter was good. The food was a huge disappointment I ordered chimichangas and what they serve me was basically an enchiladas that they might've put in the frying pan. I lived in Texas for more than 20 years and ate at many different Mexican restaurants, most of which were family run businesses, so I have eaten many chimichangas and let me assure you these were not chimichangas. A chimichanga is a LARGE flour tortilla that completely covers the filling & then is deep fried. It is not open ended like an enchilada. This was made with a SMALL tortilla and the only resemblance to a chimichanga was that it was a flour tortilla as opposed to a corn tortilla which is used in enchiladas. One of my dinner partners ordered a burrito and again was basically served an enchilada wrapped in a small flour tortilla. A burrito is similar to a chimichanga in that a chimichanga is deep-fried whereas the burrito is not. In the following pictures, the first picture is a picture of what a chimichanga should look like minus the garnishes. The second picture is what I was served. There is no need to go to a restaurant chain like Plaza Azteca when there are any number of good family owned Mexican restaurants in the area such as El Tapatio which is about a half mile away. The only reason I would return to Plaza Azteca would be if there was a group luncheon or dinner there and I wanted to socialize. I would not go back there for the food. read more

I had the shrimp fajitas, I couldn't even finish them they were so lackluster and flavorless. There was too much sauce again. Would have liked more than two mouthfuls of beans and rice. Empanadas were deep fried and too hot to eat. When they cooled off they got greasy. Our server, Gabriella was fantastic. Very sweet and respectful and accommodating. I had Carnitas dinner & the pork was incredibly soft, succulent and super juicy. Melt in your mouth tenderness. The rice and beans with cheese was super flavorful. Super delicious. The Mexican fried cheesecake was outstanding very creamy center flaky on the outside, and they were able to add caramel drizzle for me since I was not a fan of cinnamon dust. But it was super good.
