Who knew Mexican food on the East Coast could taste so good!? With murals on the outside and a small, no-frills dining room inside, La Pena Mexicana delivers on excellent food and service. Stopping in around 1 pm on a Saturday in July, my wife, seven-year-old daughter and I got a table right away. Within minutes, our order was being taken and our food coming out shortly after. Each of us really enjoyed our food. My daughter loved the cheese quesadilla, my wife the enchiladas, and I the Tex Mex burrito with carnitas dripping with red sauce. It comes with rice, beans, avocado, and lettuce. The flavors explode in your mouth!

Quaint little spot, excellent food, great prices, and the horchata is so good, comes in the big gulp size cups

La Peña Mexicana never disappoints. Just consistently great authentic Mexican food. It's a local go to for us when we're craving Mexican for dinner.

You HAVE to try this phenomenal, hidden, affordable, hole in the wall in Kennet Square. This small, family run, taqueria has some of the best food I have eaten in my entire life. Every single bite you can tell is lovingly crafted, seasoned, and served with care. You can see in the back and tell that they know what they are doing and they are people that you can trust with your food. We took my very Caucasian in laws here and they gave their tacos two thumbs up. But if you're looking to step outside of your comfort zone, their beef tongue is so beautifully cooked. It's so tender. You can't go wrong here. Do yourself a favor, and eat here, and expand your flavor palette and try something new!

Perhaps out of all the Mexican joints along the highways and byways I have traveled in life's journey this is my favorite but I never seem to be able to remember it's name. But, you see I am a guy and I can always get you there but perhaps I can't provide really concise directions. And, it is really a good thing that I have never forgotten how to get to this Kennett Square treasure because ever since I found it after walking out of another Kennet Square eatery (That somehow is still in business) friends and family have joined me in enjoying Mexican food at its best! Visit Longwood Gardens head to La Pena!! Checking out Winterthur ... that other DuPont estate ... head to La Pena!! Kennet Square highways are confusing ... La Pena almost looks like a gas station and maybe that's what it once was but it will be on YOUR LEFT and it looks a bit dicey but oh so homey! Time it right and you will find a seat time it wrong and you will wait because there just aren't a lot of tables but waits are worth the time. Definitely not a dress up eatery because you aren't there to show off your finery you are coming to be satisfied. Signage claims that La Pena's best service happens when you order at the counter but I have never received anything less than top rate service at the table. Sometimes the cook even sings as he prepares your meal and that's a bonus! Step into the men's room and you'll laugh at the wall painting. But .... it's not the men's room nor the singing ... not even the service but the authentic tastes of Mexican simplicity that you will discover at prices that will make you wonder if you have gone back in time. Torta's and Tamales; Huaraches and Taco's; and yes burritos, enchiladas, sopes, tostadas, fajitas, and chimichangas too! An amazing array of meat choices although I have not yet made the bold move to choose what appears to be a speciality ... Lengua (look it up haha). Sauces are yummy ... simplicity but filled with careful thought and love delivers time after time! And, even an array of sodas/pops that come from Mexico too. La Pena has been recognized by various media folks too but I am hoping to not forget the name but I know where I am going because there is only one special place like this ... if you are in the neighborhood make plans to stop by and enjoy!

Carnitas, asada, and Al Pastor tacos

It's places like this that make me wish I could curse on this app. Instead I'll let my iPhone autocorrect what I want to say. These tacos are ducking amazing!!! Every place I've ever visited that I thought was the best Mexican ever eventually gets outdone by someone else. That's what makes me hesitant to call this the best I've ever had. But seriously. I can't imagine any place making tacos better than these. I tried carnitas, Al Pastor, and asada. Everything was incredible. But honestly next time I'd be tempted to just get three carnitas. They melt in your mouth like butter! And in a bigger testament, my wife and I started fighting over who got to eat more of the rice and beans. Perfect fluffiness in the rice and creaminess in the refried beans made us want to eat it forever. This place will seriously make me look for excuses to come out to Kennett Square just to eat here.

I just can't stay away from this place. I almost always get the Al pastor tacos there. Today I switched it up for the sunken chimichanga with medium salsa verde. As delicious as it is beautiful.

After ordering a few tacos, I regret not ordering the broth that everyone else seemed to have ordered. Regardless, the tacos were divine. I have to say the peppers were extremely spicy and something that I half-regret eating. But despite the spicy sweats, the flavors were spot on that it was such a memorable meal. Would definitely be back.

I am a big huaraches fan, and I tried this in four different restaurants in a couple of months. Each time I enter every restaurant I look around and leave if it is dirty. This restaurant was clean. I ordered the carnitas (roasted pork) huaraches. The pork was juicy, and the toppings fresh. This nice sized portion kept me full all day. I did not see a Diet Coke in the drink refrigerator. I got a bottled water (better for me). The gentleman behind the counter and the register lady were very friendly. Thank goodness I took Spanish in high school, because I use it at Mexican restaurants. I I love neighborhood Mexican joints because their food is cheaper, and is highly better quality than the most of the other restaurants. I will add this place on my lunch list!
