The guac was top notch and was enough to add to my tacos when they arrived. The Al Pastor was outstanding as was the chorizo. The lengua was tender but could have used a bit more salt. I'd go back just for the horchata with had great cinnamon and nutmeg flavors and was sweetened just right, a pinch of salt would have put it over the top for me but that's just my preference. Every single bite you can tell is lovingly crafted, seasoned, and served with care. Perhaps out of all the Mexican joints along the highways and byways I have traveled in life's journey this is my favorite but I never seem to be able to remember it's name. Visit Longwood Gardens head to La Pena!! Checking out Winterthur ... that other DuPont estate ... head to La Pena!! Kennet Square highways are confusing ... La Pena almost looks like a gas station and maybe that's what it once was but it will be on YOUR LEFT and it looks a bit dicey but oh so homey! Time it right and you will find a seat time it wrong and you will wait because there just aren't a lot of tables but waits are worth the time. Definitely not a dress up eatery because you aren't there to show off your finery you are coming to be satisfied. Signage claims that La Pena's best service happens when you order at the counter but I have never received anything less than top rate service at the table. Sometimes the cook even sings as he prepares your meal and that's a bonus! Step into the men's room and you'll laugh at the wall painting. But .... it's not the men's room nor the singing ... not even the service but the authentic tastes of Mexican simplicity that you will discover at prices that will make you wonder if you have gone back in time. Torta's and Tamales; Huaraches and Taco's; and yes burritos, enchiladas, sopes, tostadas, fajitas, and chimichangas too! An amazing array of meat choices although I have not yet made the bold move to choose what appears to be a speciality ... Lengua (look it up haha). Sauces are yummy ... simplicity but filled with careful thought and love delivers time after time! And, even an array of sodas/pops that come from Mexico too. Every place I've ever visited that I thought was the best Mexican ever eventually gets outdone by someone else. That's what makes me hesitant to call this the best I've ever had. But seriously. I can't imagine any place making tacos better than these. I tried carnitas, Al Pastor, and asada. Everything was incredible. But honestly next time I'd be tempted to just get three carnitas. They melt in your mouth like butter! And in a bigger testament, my wife and I started fighting over who got to eat more of the rice and beans. Perfect fluffiness in the rice and creaminess in the refried beans made us want to eat it forever. The food is delicious and authentic Mexican! My family and I loved our food. The staff was friendly except for the young man at the cash register taking orders and serving the food. He was disrespectful and rolled his eyes at us several times when requesting sauces and water. He did not even greet us or make eye contact when ordering. The young man very clearly was not happy. The restaurant almost can be called a hole in the wall, except it is located in a stand-alone building :) Note that the restaurant doesn't offer any alcohol, so you can probably bring your own, however, we didn't ask this question, so you might want to call ahead and check if you can bring your bottle. Extensive menu of Mexican dishes, also with good explanations for the different items. I had Tilapia fish tacos, which were very generous and tasty. The dish was served with the Mexican rice which I could have a full bowl just by itself - it was delicious. The family enjoyed chicken and beef burritos, and beef enchilada - all dishes were excellent. I also need to mention that the restaurant offers a number of fresh made fruit waters - I had the one with pineapple, and it was superb - don't miss it on the menu. Service was prompt and friendly. Best Mexican food I have ever had. I grew up in Kennett Square and moved to Philadelphia when I was 18. For over 10 years, I've been searching for an authentic Mexican restaurant in Philadelphia that comes close to La Pena. Spoiler alert: I haven't. There is not a single place in Philadelphia that comes close to La Pena's quality in taste. I've had great Mexican food, don't get me wrong but nothing that comes close to La Pena. Every time I visit Kennett Square, I always stop by La Pena and grab their al pastor. I also stock up extra burritos to take home. What to get: Their burrito al pastor is one of the most delicious items I have ever had. Their pastor in general is fantastic. I have no idea what they do to make it so delicious but it's unbelievably delicious. If the burrito is too heavy for you, then definitely get the tacos al pastor. Their rice is also one of the greatest rice dishes I have ever tasted. The texture and flavor are beautifully done and cooked. I could literally eat the rice by itself, that's how fantastic it is. If you're in Kennett Square, do yourself a favor and grabbed La Pena. And then go to Michocana for dessert. read more

Topped with cilantro, onions and limes on the side. For my burrito i usually get carnitas. Phenomenal! So filling, always hits the spot. Packed with rice, meat beans. You won't be disappointed. La Peña was really good, but it wasn't exceptional. I have definitely had better tacos. But the service was great as our waiter was very nice and attentive. Our food came out quickly and everything was really good. I have had better tacos in Kennett Square, but I enjoyed La Peña for their other options, including quesadillas and chips & guacamole. I recommend getting Al Pastor tacos if you do decide to come here. I heard the whole fried fish is incredible here. If I come back I'll have to try that! read more
