Great Mexican restaurant (for suburban Wilmington) We stopped in for lunch a few days ago on our way back from Chincoteague. Perhaps our opinions were influenced by an acute need for spice, but we very much enjoyed our meal. We started with chips, salsa, and tableside guac - very tasty with a nice balance of heat and flavor. Then the Birria Tacos, Enchiladas El Jefe, and Sweet Plantains were spectacular. Not only were the tacos extremely 'beef-y', but the soup/dipping jus was very tasty as well. And the plantains were perfect - charred, caramelized, and flavorful. Our son very much enjoyed his Pina Loka - offputting to me, but certainly unique. But unfortunately, the Veggie Enchiladas Trio was quite bland and flavorless. On the drink side, our kids were very happy to hear they had agua frescas - jamaica and horchata - and very much enjoyed their drinks. For the adults, the Texas Margarita and Smokey Mezcalita were quite good. However, the Jalapeno Margarita was seriously lacking in "fresh lime" and tasted somewhat chemical-y. The restaurant is enormous and felt somewhat cavernous and sterile - more a place for a big party than an intimate dining experience. And the service was perfectly fine. All in all, far better than we had any right to expect for suburban Wilmington. read more

The food is extremely average, like super basic. Nothing exciting here but if you are craving Mexican food it does the job. The food could have used more seasoning and more spice. The best thing was probably the the beans and rice. The drinks are okay, could have definitely used some more liquor in them though. It's very quiet inside and never really packed. Since it wasn't packed, guests were really spread out. The service itself was great. Our waiter was at tentative and everything arrived promptly. read more

3.5 stars This place has been open for I guess about a year, maybe a little more but it was the first time I tried it. It sits back from the road a bit so you might miss it if you drive by on 40. Anyway, its kind of bare inside. Very scarcely decorated and the way the tables are set up, it makes me feel like it's more of a fast casual type of restaurant. There's so much open space and it feels like something is just missing. Get some plants in there or something. It's just not as lively and vibrant as typical Mexican restaurants The service was good. Our waiter didn't tell us his name, but that's not that big of a deal. Their cheese dip is good, but it has that cheese pull to it as it cools so it gets very thick. Also got the street corn, which I think was just one ear of corn cut into three segments. It was good, but wasn't worth the wait for it. Wish they topped it with some cilantro. The entree itself, the enchiladas chipotle, came out room temperature. The pulled beef enchilada had a good flavor to it, but the other two--the ground beef and chicken--were very bland. The rice was good. Not picture we're the seafood fried chimichanga. Sister said the shrimp was over cooked and the portion is way less than it was the first time she came. Seemed like they used one chimichanga and cut it in half instead of it being two. I love their chips and salsa though! The salsa is not chunky like some other places do it and is more puréed. It has a heavy smokiness to it. The chips are nice and fresh. The drinks were good too, if not a little a strong. Can't recommend the spicy mamacita enough! I would return for that drink and the chips again in a heartbeat. read more

Not happy with the tamales. Ordered them on 2 occasions and they were not cooked properly.

I've been here multiple times, HOWEVER, today I tried the shrimp empanadas which were unfortunately greasy and flavorless. After one bite I informed the waitress that I didn't not like the empanadas. I was asked "what's wrong with them." I informed that they were very greasy and I didn't like the flavor, as it was lacking. I was told you cannot send anything back. I asked to speak to the manager and once he came out, he again asked why. I told him the same thing. He said I could not send them back but offered me a take home box for them, and 20% off of the food I didn't want. I declined the box. So just heads up, I've never been to a restaurant where you cannot send back your food if the taste isn't to your liking. The drink was good. read more

Also they delivered a complimentary chips and salsa, the salsa was too hot and spicy for me so I threw them out but I appreciate the effort. Maybe only send mild or medium salsa in the future. Plaza Azteca offers a modern spin on Mexican food classics. Which is if different from your typical authentic Mexica restaurant. The new decor adds a fresh vibe in comparison to other local restaurants. It is one of the only places I have found Birria Taco and Spicy Margaritas on a menu in Bear, Delaware! There is ample parking outside of the resturant. This is a great place to bring a large party or for family dining. read more

It was becoming apparent that the servers need more training in customer service, especially for repeat customers. We've been there at least 4 times now, and always sit in the same area near the bar. We hardly get greeted when we come in, and even though we ordered the same thing every time, there's no acknowledgment that our business is appreciated as being repeat customers. Drinks are still solid, however I think we'll have to find another place to get good Mexican food and margaritas. read more

The food was awesome. We had the seafood chimichangas, the chicken and beef chimichangas, chimichangas texanas, street corn, and the burritos el jefe. We all fully enjoyed our food. The beans and rice were delectable and the corn was scrumptious. The chips were good and the drinks were wonderful. We had a bahama breeze, a margarita, a mojito and a boozy cherry lemonade- all delicious! The decor is definitely eclectic, but I appreciate it. Our service was very attentive and friendly. Wasn't to impress- I was at this location today, our server was very nice, the menu is easy to read, and I order "carne asada tacos" it was not bad actually they give you enough protein in the tacos and I had a domestic beer with it- but I wasn't to crazy about the meat flavor that is probably why I am giving this place a 3 star rating! Again server was nice and willing to try other items, is a decent place but I wouldn't go to crazy about it, aside from that we had no issues... it's just an other chain restaurant. read more

gluten free and vegetarian friendly ** i hadn't been here before but I decided to stop by to get take out. The people here are so kind even though i wasn't staying to eat they were helping me with the menu because i'm gluten free and vegetarian it makes it kinda hard to find stuff. There menu is labeled for both gluten free and vegetarian options. even their chips are gluten free corn tortilla chips they have a special fryer designated just for the chips to prevent cross contamination. the manager was in the front and he was very kind as well. Place was packed and yet still very clean. they gave big portions too. Definitely will be back i love this place. read more

I ordered the combo of 2 tacos, beans and rice. 16.50?!?! Wtf people. The tacos were tiny and completely apart when I got home. I also ordered their chicken and 'beef' epinadas. TERRIBLE. I have no idea what they use for BEEF but it was inedible. My mistake for paying $29.00 to throw in the trash. I went there with a friend when they first opened and had terrible service. We ordered two different margaritas. I ordered one with cucumber and she order a Smokey one. It took forever to get served and we sat at the bar. The couple next to us left the bar once they were served. We ordered green tea shots and didn't get them until the end of our meal. We ordered the Birria tacos which were somewhat flavorless. I decided to go back even after our terrible experience with service and went at a not so busy time. I had the same if not worst experience. The woman bartender is incredibly rude. Will ignore you and doesn't measure any of the alcohol being poured into mixed drinks. I'm never going back! read more

This place doesn't allow you to send food back you do not want, on top of it being my first time coming to this restaurant I was very unsatisfied I wasn't expecting my wings to look like that, I wasn't expecting wing sauce on the side and my dressing in a packet either. First time here, never noticed this place because it's in the back of other stores HOWEVER upon entering it looks very elegant. The music they play in here isn't very loud but loud enough to enjoy your meal and talk with one another. The meal I had was the Ranchero Especial and overall it was very good. I enjoyed everything from the steak to the beans. The only food I didn't enjoy in this meal very much was the burrito. It didn't have the wow factor like the rest of the meal did. That is why I gave it a four out of five. From the hostess to the waiter we're very polite and welcoming. The waiter that tended us was on point and very attentive to my needs. Very respectful and on top of everything at the same time wasn't over bearing and/or desperate to help us. I would recommend this place but you have to come correct, if you want to have their margaritas and other drinks (it costs as much as the food). read more

Been waiting for this restaurant to open and just found out that it has from a neighbor. Interior very nicely decorated and the staff friendly and accommodating. We ordered a Plaza Azteca Margarita and a Dos Equis Lager to start. Paired great with the Fresh Table Side Guacamole and Chips. For entrees we had the Steak and Chicken Fajitas combo with Beans and Rice and the Burrito and Enchilada Combo with Beans and Rice. Entrees came out quickly and the restaurant filled up by the time we were leaving. We really needed a nice new Mexican restaurant in the Bear/Newark area. Ruby Tuesday's was the previous restaurant that occupied the space. Plaza Azteca have an extensive drink and food menu so we will be returning in the future to sample other items. This restaurant at 928 Bear Corbitt Road is used to be Ruby's Tuesday. Now, it is Plaza Azteca. Inside of the restaurant was very open and all rearranged. Nice atmosphere. My visit was on 12/10/2022 and Oscar was our host. Oscar was a nice guy, joyful and attentive. Drinks - We have ordered JALAPEÑO MARGARiTA & TEXAS MARGARiTA. Drinks were awesome and had lot of kick after an hour. I felt, they were expensive. Hey, Who knows! everything is getting expensive! Chips and Salsa - Chips were warm and Salsa was mild. Hot salsa was served at an additional cost. Mild Salsa rating was 8/10 on the taste, Hot Salsa 6/10. It was hot but no flavor. Next time, I would simply stick to Mild Salsa. Mild Salsa had a great taste and flavor. FRESH TABLESIDE GUACAMOLE - Rating 8/10 - It can be better with some more of jalapeño, tomato, onion, lime and cilantro. At most of the restaurants, every thing is cutting down, prices are up on products and labor. Sure, the prices on the items are up too!! Ordered ENCHILADAS VEGETARIANAS and VEGAN BOWL I strongly recommend Vegan Bowl. Good quantity, Great Taste and at a right price. ENCHILADAS VEGETARIANAS - They were nice. Vegetables were fresh. This has to be the worst Mexican restaurant I've ever experienced. The food was tasteless and very nasty. The service was awful. I should have walked out of the restaurant at the moment we were escorted to our booth. I had to clean my seat before I sat down. The waitress did apologize. My party ordered drinks (Iced Tea). Unfortunately, the tea was disgusting as well. The iced tea was watered down to the point that it was light brown. Bottom line, enter at your risk. The food was less than pleasing. read more
