Plaza is a go to place with me and my son. I don't think I have ever ordered something that I didn't like. This Hampton location is my 2nd choice but the one on Jefferson Ave by Oyster Point is my #1. I didn't feel like cooking so after I picked up my son from football suggested Plaza. The server was very nice and friendly and of course you always start off with the chips salsa and the white dipping sauce (my fav). Wish the salsa was a lil chunkier and spicer. Ordered naked chicken wings as an appetizer( yes, we did from a Mexican place). We always get wings naked b/c they have this Mexican dipping sauce for the wings but me and my child do not like it. Mad though that wings went up to $10. By the time my son had 3wings left here comes the main entree. We happened to order the same thing which is the Burrito de la Ruleta. Burrito de la Ruleta consists of chicken or steak, rice black beans, onions, and on top covered in white cheese sauce and pico de gallo. He ordered steak no onions and I had chicken with light onions. CAUTION when onion is in a dish they get very heavy handed with it!! WARNING burritos are pretty big and very filling. We had no room for dessert. All Plazas have happy hour, table side guacamole, and a couple of them have karaoke night. Overall way better than Taco Bell, very filling and pleasing, and of course very quick service. That's why we keep going for lunch or dinner!! read more

In town for a quick business meeting, I stopped here as it was somewhat close to my hotel. I really liked the environment and setting - nice ambiance! I ordered a Dos Equis on tap and the Chori Pollo. The food came out very quickly and tasted good. I did like the chorizo and cheese topping - the flavors complimented each other well. The service was marginal at best. I think I saw my server three times the entire night: when she took my order, when she brought me my order, and when she asked me if I was ready for the check (about 5 minutes into my meal). She seemed new, so I'm sure it was just inexperience. Decent food, nice ambiance, and close to the hotels. A nice place to eat if you don't want to venture too far away from the area. read more

I am a huge fan of Plaza. You honestly can't go wrong with any of their menu choices! My fiancé and I had a great experience here. Our waitress was fantastic and the food tasted great. We came around lunch time, which was perfect timing because it was not busy at all. We were also able to order off their lunch menu (food is cheaper!!). My fiancé and I both ordered their lunch chicken fajitas (this ended up being cheaper than ordering the fajitas for two). The fajitas tasted pretty darn good and the portion size for lunch was on point! We ended up paying about $25 with tip. The only thing that made me give Plaza a 4 star review vs a 5 star is due to the chips. Most of the chips we received were stale and broken up in very tiny pieces. Other than that, great experience overall. We will definitely be back to this location. Great service and food. read more

Some questionable things have happened here like pieces of ripped paper in my chips and fingernail like hard stuff in the sauce but above all I'm fairly certain nobody here speaks English. Today I got charged 5 dollars for a little cheese on my rice. Ok, annoying to eat here. But bottom line, I like the food. read more

Shrimp TacosShrimp TacosMejillones Plaza AztecaFood is delicious and no long wait, I highly recommend.

We were in the mood for some Mexican food today so we decided to hit up Plaza. It was great timing as there was hardly anyone there for lunch! They have a lunch menu from 11am-3pm so we were able to get fajitas for even less than they cost at dinner. I'm always down for saving money! The lunch fajitas were $9.95 and came with rice, beans, pico, sour cream, chicken, bell peppers, and onions. I got mine with double rice because I don't care for their beans but I LOVE the rice. We were seated immediately and helped right away, which is always a plus. We got our chips and salsa right away, but the chips were pretty skimpy. We got a full bowl of them, but under the initial layer of full-sized chips was a butt load of crumbs. I would have liked to see some fresh chips. Other than that it was a great experience! We will definitely keep this place on our list of great Mexican food for the area. read more

The food was amazing and the service was outstanding! Took less than 10 minutes for the food to come out ! Definitely recommend !

Plaza Azteca is consistently good no matter what location you hit. I took the entire family here and we work over the free chips and salsa they put on the table. My son ate so much that he was full by the time his meal arrived. Again, I am predictable when it comes to mexican food. I always get the fried chicken chimichanga meal. On this day, I think the entire family was starving because we all ate several bowls of chips and salsa between up. By the time we left I was nearly in a good coma. As for the bar, they have a pretty decent tequila selection. I try to stay away from their house margaritas because they are made with rock gut liquor. I always have them make my margaritas fresh with my call on the tequila. The beers are huge and the prices are reasonable. Oh, if you are in a hurry, they got you covered. You might wait 5 minutes to get your food. The fastest service in town. read more

The renovated Hampton location is reminiscent of that awesome 90's kid show, Legends of the Hidden Temple...I honestly wish Olmec was affixed to one of the walls providing commentary on the guac. That being said, this is a great huge layout that has nice lighting, swanky and comfy seating, and can accommodate groups from small to extra large. The service is friendly and quick, and their chips and salsa/white sauce are delicious, but lack spice...I swear it's not in my head, they have gotten more mild on the salsa front... The menu is definitely stepping up and the dishes while still offering the traditional favorites, have much more elevated and high quality items. Consequently it seems the prices are stepping up slightly as well... It's looking more and more like an Uncle Julios, but it still has that old mexi-style charm. Where else can you find perfect jumbo margs and 32 oz. dos equis?! The Plaza del Mar is delicious but very creamy and rich, so I only recommend this if you like seafood, but don't care about the healthy aspect of seafood haha. I was a little disappointed because the description and picture shows mango salsa as part of the dish, but unfortunately it came without in reality and was definitely lacking that fruit acidity. read more

First off how can any place make a margarita taste so bad accidentally? Tasted medicinal. Barria Tacos. My goodness. How can something dripping in broth taste so darn dry? Horrible. Is juicy but dry as sand possible? read more

This is my go-to margaritas spot. I went last night with a couple of my friends and was a little disappointed in our experience. We sat outside because it was a BEAUTIFUL night with perfect weather. While I waited for my friends I noticed a terrible smell when I sat on the patio. There was an overwhelming smell of either old beer or vomit...or both. It also took our server a long time to greet me and bring me and take my drink order. It seemed like he waited for the rest of my table to join, but I would have purchased an appetizer if he had come by my table earlier. Once the rest of my table arrived, service was pretty smooth. I would suggest wearing or bringing bug spray if you choose to sit outside, there were terrible mosquitos that came out when the sun started to go down. They have a pretty wide variety of margaritas and other drinks. I'd recommend the classic margaritas on the rocks, texas style marg, or the beer margarita. Even though my experience was not fantastic last night, it won't prevent me from going back again. read more

Family friendly with a friendly staff. Similar to Salsas in that the food is great! My brother gets the fajitas every time we come here. Kids get cheese quesadillas. So they a great with families. I of course try not to stray to far from my favorite things. But when you are on Keto what is there? You get creative but they will also accommodate you. I enjoy the atmosphere and it's great for hanging with friends. Keep up the good work. I still love the chicken quesadillas rancheros here as well as at Salsas. I think the like the chips here better. They are saltier. The queso and salsa dip will have you cheating on your diet all night. Great place to eat then catch a movie at the AMC 24. read more

This is my favorite Plaza location. (Oyster Point would be the close second) I've been here a million times but yesterday was the first time I really stopped to observe the beautiful Aztec architecture & Art adorning the entire restaurant. We ordered two jumbo margaritas one strawberry & one traditional lime. Due to a mess up at the bar I actually got the Texas which has more alcohol, so that was awesome. For our entree we ordered the Fajitas for two. HUGE portion of chicken, beef, shrimp & carnitas (pork). You also get a plate with rice & beans & sour cream. (you can sub double if you don't like one) Babe had 3 fajitas & I had 2 both stuffed pretty well. We had a lot of leftovers & when the waitress saw that she asked why, I told her I took everything but the carnitas (just wasn't that yummy to me) & she let me know you can sub for any of the meats except shrimp, so that's a good to know for next time. Overall, I hadn't had Mexican in a long time & it really hit the spot. Delicious, fast & friendly service. Can't beat it. read more

Everything was bad. Ordered a gin and tonic got no lime and flat tonic. Ordered beef fajita, meat was overcooked, tough and dry. Not worth it at all very disappointed. read more

Stopped at this restaurant on my way to the movies. The parking lot was packed, we thought it would take a while to get a table but surprisingly we were taken care of as soon as we walked through the door. The place is awesome in the inside. The service was excellent at all times. Our order was taken and a few minutes later our food was in front of us, all as ordered and super hot. Everything tasted great. This will definitely be our Mexican place when in the area. Will post some pictures next time read more

The inside of the place is awesome. Other wise its not aything special. If you go here its not for the food but because its easy. Quick hits on my latest visit to Plaza Azteca: Positives: -- Really tasty + hot food. Similar to most of the Mexican restaurants. Enjoyed eating a meal, along with a large liter mug of beer. -- Fast service and friendly service. Waitress was excellent! Some of the folks at the table had 'special requests" and she got them all with no problems. Only negative is that you might have to wait in line for a bit on peak hours as it is a popular place. But that is about it on the neg. Side. Overall, 3.5 stars and I will definitely be back again sometime! Nice place to eat. :-) read more

This is the typical slop being served and pushed by the "mexican mafia" of restaurateurs. It is what it is, but is certainly NOT good mexican food. When pre-mixed Margaritas and Cheese Whiz are the prime ingredients, I stay away and you should too! No thanks! read more

I have been coming here for more than a decade and I'm not really sure why I am just now leaving a review. I would honestly give it a solid 3.5 stars. I don't have it in me to round up to 4 stars though. I've seen it's share of change in management and all the renovations it's made through the years. The restaurant looks great and is nice and spacious. They even have nice snazzy new menus. I came in with a friend and we both craved the Mexican shrimp fried rice (basic, I know). For $14.50, I expected my portion of my entree to be wayyy more than what I received. I am a petite 125ish pound woman. I ate the whole thing. Not one grain of rice was left on that plate and I was still hungry. I am not pregnant eating for 2 either. That portion was way too small. Way smaller than what I remember being given years ago. Don't get me wrong, service was great and the flavor was on point. And I will probably be back again one day out of convenience because I live around the corner. But just because you did some updating doesn't mean you can just charge more for little food. read more

I like the food here because it's cheap and fulfilling and of decent quality. I've had a LOT worst in Hampton Roads! For example, $8 for three generous chicken and spinach enchiladas, a side of rice, and copious amounts of chips, salsa, and white sauce. So full for under 10 bucks! Speaking of the white sauce...I asked a server and he told me that it's basically mayo mixed with a bunch of spices. My 2 problems with this place: 1. PACKED every time I go there for dinner. That could be expected of most restaurants, but the problem is... 2. Poor service. I told the server when ordering that I wanted rice and beans (even though the menu stated my enchiladas only came with rice) and he said okay. Then the food comes out with no beans in sight and I tell the guy who brought the food, who says "it only comes with rice." I told him I would pay the extra and he said that he would bring it out. Never saw the beans nor the guy again. Didn't think it was worth any further hassle, but still would have been nice to get what I ordered. I do like the big comfy booths and nice decor. A+ for that! read more

For this Texas girl...I have to say the food here is pretty decent. I remember going here all the time when I was in college. It really did the trick when I was missing me some Tex-Mex from back home. Okay, so it's no Tex-Mex but it's just about the best you can get in the Hampton Roads area! You could make a meal out of the chips, salsa, and white dip they give you for starters. Drinks are good here too and I remember they had some awesome karaoke. Definitely worth checking out! The Newport News location is great too! read more

Stopped the other day on the way home from a short vacation. We arrived a little early so were seated fast. I have never dined here so I do not know how busy they get. The service was OK, not fantastic but not bad either. As expected the chips and salsa came out quick and was above standard. As usual there were too many menu choices so we had to delay placing our order. Once we placed our order the food arrived pretty fast. I ordered just a Chicken Burrito with a side order of rice and another of beans. My wife ordered something we had not seen in other places. She got a couple of fajita style chicken burritos that came with rice and beans. My Chicken Burrito was good but no better than some of the other ones I have had. My wife's fajita style chicken burritos were great. I had a few bites of hers and thought the taste was fantastic. All in all it was a fast but decent meal. I have had many Mexican food experiences that were pretty bad so it's a plus to find a place that is pretty good. I have to take note of the reviews of some of the other chain's locations. So, maybe consistency is what they need to work on. read more

I'm not a big Mexican food eater. Typically only go for mandatory social gatherings. I haven't been to this particular plaza as much as I have the one in Newport News. Looks like the rest- awesome decor and clean. Staff looks clean and kept. I'm not one to be big on someone handling my straw.. even if you leave the little paper on.. bc I'm like what happened to the other end.. but when you think about it.. they are cooking my food.. so hey.. can't let my personal paranoia jeopardize their stars. I got what I always get.. either chicken and rice or shrimp and rice. This is by far not the cheapest meal on the menu.. but it looks like this time I may have received the lunch portion rather then the dinner. The way my cheese was slapped on you can tell there was no love on that plate. Had to send my shrimp back bc some were crystal clear, thru the thru, sushi raw. I asked for a quick refire.. from a very awesome waitress, who gladly took my plate back to the kitchen! (I almost never send things back to the kitchen, I just deal with it.. so my prayers are above and beyond right now) 2nd plate came out.. shrimp cooked, portion a lil better.. waitress still amazing, prayers still gigantic! My son played safe.. and ordered corn dogs and fries. He ate his meal with no complaints. All and all.. a piece of me feels like what I received tonight wasn't worth what I paid, but add in the ambiance and my awesome waitress... *shrugs* guess I'll call it even. read more

I want to love this place, especially because my husband and I have been eating here together for almost 7 years...but I'm just not sure I do anymore. I used to love the huge portions of delicious food...now the portions are a lot smaller. We also used to really love the white salsa...apparently you have to ask for it now...and when they bring it out its in a tiny cup. The food is still pretty good most of the time, but don't try to make any substitutions or add anything extra on to your meal because that doesn't usually work out well. In general I still love the good, I just don't feel like it's as good a value or as fun to eat there anymore. read more

This restaurant used to be our go-to for Mexican food, but that is just no longer the case. First of all, the price has increased (dramatically!) in the past two years. In addition to the price increase, the portion size has decreased. I would not mind one of those happening, but for both to happen at the same time does seem like a slap in the face. Also, the price of alcoholic drinks seems to be creeping up now, further Secondly, the menu keeps changing. We still seem to be able to order our standards (such as chicken cheese nachos and chili verde), but it's confusing to come in to the restaurant twice in one week and see two different menus. Also, we're never sure if we're going to be charged for an extra bowl of chips. Unfortunately, there is no better Mexican restaurant in the area. However, at the current price per plate, I'm not sure we will be returning with the kids as regularly as we once did. read more

I used to go to this place regularly before I started eating a little more healthier and staying within my food budget. And by no means am I a Mexican food expert or anything, but if you want some good food to eat at a reasonable price, I'd check out this place. Overall, the food is what's made me a fan. The chips and dip come out pretty promptly when you get seated and you get waited on in a good amount of time. Typically I get the same thing every time, the chori pollo. I did get the seafood enchilada a while back, but that just didn't agree with me so I stopped ordering it. One thing that is very surprising is how quickly my food would come out after I ordered. It was almost scary how fast they made that food. But nevertheless, the chicken was always juicy to me and the chorizo was cooked great. I always leave there full and happy. Great spot and I'd love to check it out again one my day I get to eat anything. lol! read more

The food here is just bland. That's not good for any kind of food and especially disappointing for Mexican food which usually has such great flavor. I am not even a huge spicy food-lover so you know if I think it's bland, it's bad. I thought maybe the first time I went it was just a bad day in the kitchen. Maybe they ran out of a critical spice. But I went back for lunch a few weeks later with coworkers and it was still extremely bland, and this was after I deliberately ordered something claiming to be spicy, which normally I would avoid. Service was fine and atmosphere is ok- although the acoustics are kind of loud in here. But that can't make up for tasteless food. I won't be coming back a third time unless my coworkers insist. read more
