Stopped here by chance. We were craving Mexican and happen to be driving by. The place wasn't busy. Seat you when you walk in. There are booths and tables. Decor is someone typical of a Mexican restaurant. The place was very clean. They have several TV's hanging up so it would be a nice place for a sports fan. They do have a full bar. The food came out hot and fresh. The refried beans are one of the best that we have had anywhere. Boyfriend ordered Tacos De Carne Asada and I had the Taquitos Mexicanos. I chose this because it came with 2 beef and 2 chicken. Everything tasted fresh and cooked to perfection. We will go back and try more items. Upon entry we noticed the lighting was dimmed and somewhat dark. There was no wait as we were seated immediately. Menus and water were served, and our waitress was kind. The hubs ordered a beef enchilada and taco entree. I'm a sucker for fajitas so that's usually my go to order. The food was quick not much of a wait from when our orders were taken. Presentation wise it wasn't winning any awards. This was a first where both entrees did not include rice. It only included beans and some lettuce. The taco shell was stale and the beef enchilada was standard. As for my fajitas, pictures can be deceiving. The lunch portion is very small so keep that in mind. It was mixed with steak and chicken, and placed on a silver platter instead of a cast iron skillet. The disappointing part was the steak was tough, and hard to chew with some fatty parts. I should've done a review of this place a long, long time ago. This has been our favorite Mexican spot in Hampton Roads since 2014 thanks to a social group I belonged to back in the day. Their food for the most part was pretty good and the service was quick and friendly. But due to COVID, dining in was mostly a no-go. So just like we've been doing a lot since March, takeout was the best option which we did before the Christmas holidays. And we haven't been back since probably a year ago. The process was pretty simple: call-in for your order and pick-up in 10-15 minutes since service is very quick anyway. For my meal, I chose the Chile Verde dish, which is beef tips in green tomatillo sauce along with rice and beans and a couple of flour tortillas (girlfriend chose the Taquitos Mexicanos dish, which is her usual here). Delicious as always. Each item was cooked very well and it was easy on how they put together the dish in the to-go place. Only regret I have was I should've asked for more tortillas with my meal, but nonetheless I was pleased. read more

We have visited for both lunch and dinner and both service and food have been consistently great. The lunch service is quick so if you're short on time it's a good place for a quick lunch. They also offer to-go orders. It is located in the shopping center with Boston Market on Coliseum Drive in Hampton across from Peninsula Town Center. This visit I ordered the #3 lunch special which is the enchilada (your choice of meat) with rice and beans. My friend ordered the #15 lunch chimichanga special. Both dishes came out quickly and were tasty. They provide the usual complimentary chips and salsa with white sauce upon request which were both good. The salsa has a little kick to it so if you're sensitive to spicy food I'll taste it first ;) Overall El Azteca is a great choice for an affordable, delicious meal! read more

I've been here once before and while it is a good place, it's not a great place. I do like the spicy salsa, but not everyone likes a spicy salsa like I do. The food is good, but it's nothing to die for. The flautas are more like small chimichangas instead of rolled tacos. Not bad, but not great either. The chicken and rice with mushrooms and queso was the same as the chicken and rice, just with mushrooms. The white sauce is still unknown to me. I don't understand what it is besides some sort of ranch or the like. I don't have a need for it. We came with a large party and our waiter didn't seem to be able to keep up with it all. There is a greater language barrier here than at other places too, so be patient and know they can't understand you fully. I think unless we have a group that chooses this again, I'd probably try a different place for the next visit. read more

"Decent Mexican food across from Peninsula Town Center" Came here to get some Mexican takeout on a Monday night. Ordering by phone was easy-- I got chicken tamales, chicken quesadillas, and some chips and guacamole. The interior of the restaurant was unassuming. I was disappointed that none of the staff were wearing masks given the current pandemic. But they were friendly and fast getting us our takeout. The food averaged around "very good". The guacamole dip (not "salad") had a little spicy zing to it but no tomatoes and was a little more watery than I expected. The chips were just OK. The tamale had a mole sauce on it, and tasted good but it was drier than I would have preferred. The winner for me, though, was the chicken quesadillas-- those were EXCELLENT. A hint of spiciness and also having sauteed onions in them-- yum! That did make them a lot more mushy than normal, but the taste was excellent. Of the MANY Mexican places I've tried, I'd say this was "middle of the pack" -- not outstanding but not bad at all, and the prices were reasonable. My family and I used to come here often but it had been a while, pre-covid, since we've visited. We previously loved their dishes, plenty of flavor, good prices and great portions. Things have unfortunately changed. The service was a bit slow, and it was not busy at all. Half of our family ended up getting their food while the other half waited a considerable amount of time to get theirs, including my 7 year old who order a hamburger. The rice had no flavor at all. The white sauce that comes with the chips tasted like straight mayo with no other seasoning. The sauce that came on my chicken was terrible. I couldn't even finish my food. Pollo asado - the biggest portion I've ever been served since moving to this side of the ocean. Am I complaining? Absolutely not. I ate it ALL! Okay, I just told a fib. I took half of it home, but I polished it off over some Netflix bingeing so it still counts, right!? My meal came on two plates: a huge salad with all the trimmings on one, and the pollo asado, rice and beans on the other. The servers are some of the most friendly people in the world and they value service. They kept our drinks full and frequently checked on us as my wife could not decide what she wanted for the large selections of food. Servers are knowledgeable of the food and speak English. Went to Mexico during my military days and discovered that Mexican food is bland. However this place had a nice selection of sauces to spice things up and add flavor. This visit was for a Yelp review only and I was not disappointed. The prices were OUTSTANDING, two people ate for under $30. This is literally the best American-Mexican food we've been able to find in the area. They've got all your basic combos you expect at this type of place - plus, super tasty salsa, guacamole and cheese dip. Last night we came in for dinner and I tried the pork carnitas. WOW. The pork was perfectly cooked, falling apart and flavorful. The beans here are fantastic, rice is solid, and the service is top notch. We're always seated promptly, receive our food quickly and get speedy refills on chips and waters. The tortillas aren't handmade, which is really the only big downside here, they are your standard kind of Mission style you can buy at the store. I have been a BIG fan of this place since they began their family owned eatery off Constituion Blvd. in Virginia Beach, VA under the same name. Two brothers wonderfully run this place, and was able to touch base with one of them while at this eatery to thank them for a job well done! I enjoy good Mexican food, and haven't had the pleasure of trying this Hampton location out until now. This place does not dissapoint! Let's just overview the things my husband and I enjoyed most about this paticular location. The setup is clean, nice mexicana ambiance, with comfortbable seating and staff that were very very helpful! They all worked together as a team to get the job done well. My husband was exicted about the white sauce that accompanied the red salsa and chips. They do a great job with that white sauce, because my husband likes it better then all other mexican places we've been to. The food was great, the portions were enough to take another meal home for later, and the chips tasted fresh. They kept our drinks and chips filled at all times, which was such a nice bonus to this already great meal out. When you leave a place feeling happy and filled, and feeling as if you lacked nothing while eating at their establishment....you know you have found greatness. This is not just a here and gone tomorrow sort of place...but have already shown themselves to being tried and true from their other location, and now expanding to Hampton, VA as well. This restaurant is right beside Boston Market at the end of a shopping center in the coliseum area. The lot had plenty of nearby parking and was easily accessible in and out. We came here on Friday night around 8pm (4 adults, 1 child) and there was no wait. The host stand is extremely crowded, which I am noticing as a trend with Mexican restaurants, and if there's a lot of people you will be pushed into the dining room. The dining room is open and large. There are booths on the 3 outer walls and tables in between. The kitchen is on the back far left of the restaurant and the bathrooms on the back far right. The bathrooms were through a door that leads into a smaller hallway, then it is divided into the male/female rooms. The restrooms were clean, well stocked and well lit but the door looked like it didn't lock all the way. It made me a bit nervous that someone would walk in on my child and I. The menu is vast and nearly everything sounded good. The drink cups are GIANT!! I didn't need a single refill the entire dinner. The salsa was a bit spicy but that's how I like it! The food was CHEAP! I got a soft taco and cheese quesadilla for my son and it was $4.50 a la carte. The kids menu ranges from 4.25-5.75. Three folks ordered the Chori Pollo ($10.00) and I was told it's the best in the world. It was really good! This restaurant's chori pollo is sliced chicken, not a flattened breast piece, and it has grilled onions along with the chori. It was served with 3 warm flour tortillas and melty nacho cheese sauce on top of the meat mixture. YUM! I had never had chori pollo with onions but it was an excellent addition. I feel I got more chicken because of the sliced form and the cheese sauce mixed with the rice and beans was heaven on a plate. The beans were a pleasant consistency and the rice was good, as well. I was stuffed silly and couldn't finish everything. My son ate up his taco and quesadilla quite happily. The service was pleasant without them being overbearing. The kitchen was slow with getting out the quesadilla but the server made sure we knew it was coming up and he was on top of it. Well, this place was pretty good. Not blow your hair back amazing, but tasty nonetheless. The chips are fresh & the salsa is medium spicy. My chimichaunga was.good & I got some cheese enchiladas (which they served without sauce for some reason). The service wasn't great, but whatever. It was good enough.
