So Juan's what can I say it was basic... the server had no personality - he may have been really tired. He barely spoke. But was quick , the food came out really fast. First I love Mexican food this really wasn't it. The nacho chips were stale, the drink wasn't sweet, the fish tacos were dry I put the salsa on them and ate them. and the churro had chocolate sauce on it. Came here during national margarita day! They had great margarita specials, but the happy hour one was the best! Their frozen margaritas were delicious! We let the bartender choose our flavors. The happy hour menu was okay. The tacos were a big disappointment (dry and bland). However, the carne asada fries were a big hit! The fried chimmichunga was pretty good as well. I don't care what anyone else is saying, Juan's is still kicking it! Went there a week ago with my Grubbing Buddy, after not having Mexican in a while, and it felt like we ordered every favorite Mexican dish we could think of. A while back, at the same location in Hampton, there was a different restaurant that appeared to be doing well, but recently Juan's Mexican Café & Cantina was added to the owner's other two Mexican restaurants: Juan' Taqueria & Cantina and Juan's Rooftop & Cantina. I have not tried all of the locations, but we often go to the Mexican Café and Cantina because it is closest to us. They have an amazing Birria Ramen Noodle Soup which, surprisingly, I did not order this trip. Instead, we ordered a watermelon margarita (which tasted more like peach than watermelon but was good nonetheless), Crazy Elotes (corn), Fajitas Durango (shrimp, steak, chicken), rice and beans, ceviche, extra crema and tortillas, which was graciously served to us by our waitress, Aurora. We knew it was going to be too much, but we loved it all and knew that it would be enough to last us almost a week. Juan's is one of my two favorite Mexican restaurants, and we plan to try Juan's Rooftop option soon. read more

I had about an hour for lunch total, to include the commute, giving me about 40 minutes to get in and out of Juan's. At around 12:40pm on a Tuesday, it was a really slow crowd. It had a pretty cool atmosphere, an authentic flair if you will. I was seated and served quickly with water, chips and salsa, and promptly ordered a Birria Burrito. The burrito literally came out minutes later, and it was hot! I was excited as everything up to this point was worming out perfectly. Quick seating, prompt service, great attention to detail by the server...Juan's was killing it! But when I ate the Birria Burrito, it tasted more like pot roast in a flour tortilla with some sauce on it. It wasn't bad, but it was boring and bland, I was quite underwhelmed. To be fair, I live in El Paso, TX so I understand that getting Mexican food in Virginia isn't going to match up, but even still, I wasn't impressed. So this is a weird review for me because of that. Came here after a full day out on the water, so we were really hungry. We were seated and received water promptly, but our waitress was nowhere to be found. That was kind of the running theme of the night. I gave my girlfriend my order (a Corona and ACP) and went to the bathroom. When I came back, she was still ordering. The waitress didn't seem to understand English very well, which surprised me. Apparently, it was so bad, she messed up the drink order for my girlfriend and didn't even submit a dinner order for me. Later, after my girlfriend's entree came out, I was just sitting there, waiting for mine. The waitress eventually came by and asked me if I wanted to order food. Really?!? I ordered ACP and specifically said "Arroz Con Pollo", as I could tell that she was having some issues understanding us. She came back 5 minutes later and asked if I wanted chicken or steak. *Sigh* By now, I was starting to get upset. How long had this woman been doing her job? Because it was not going well tonight. I eventually got my food. Fortunately, the food was very good and arrived hot. We had Tres Leches cake for dessert (also very good), then the waitress disappeared again when it was time to get the bill. After 10-15 minutes of waiting with the dishes piled up, I eventually stopped another waitress and told her our "Police Woman" waitress was missing (she was dressed up for Halloween). The other waitress went to get her, we paid our bill, and left. Normally, we receive excellent service at any Mexican restaurant we've eaten at. Juan's was an exception. Good food, bad service. I've been going to Juan's for years and the last 2 times left a lot to be desired. The first time we were seated outside at the Hampton location and it was hard to get a waiter unless we went inside to wave them down. Then when the food came out so did the roaches. After seeing the 3rd roach run across the wall we decided to move inside. First i asked the waiter to make sure it was ok and he pointed to a couple of tables we could move to. We were a group of 7 and after we all moved inside and sat down, another waitress told us that the table was reserved. I explained what happened and she got an attitude and left. Then Saturday we go to the Newport News location and again staff was very rude. The establishment began charging for white sauce and when we asked the waitress for more chips she said she would bring more when we were done with the ones we had. Mind you, there were 5 of us and 3 chips in the basket. The waitress only came back when it was time for the check. I'm pretty mild mannered when it comes to the service industry because I understand that it's a difficult job. That being said, i don't see myself returning to either one of these locations because there's an abundance of Mexican restaurants throughout the peninsula. read more

This was our first time trying out Juan's. When we lived here 8 years ago it was Abuellos. The interior was clean. It was a little tricky to navigate the host stand, waiting area and patrons near by. But, it was good. When we walked in we noticed a huge group. I could smell trouble from the moment so walked in. The amount of margaritas and corona beers, and the amount of people at the table tipped us off. We were seated just on the other side of the large group. I wish we were seated much farther from them. That's my only complaint. That party had been there way before us and they were screaming and yelling long before we arrived. The hostess should have seated people away from the party. I'm all about enjoying yourself, but screaming and yelling and carrying on in a public establishment is uncalled for regardless how many drinks are in you. At one point an employee from the bar went over to tell them to lowers their volume.'that did not work. They finally left and we could finally talk instead of talk extremely loud to each other at the table. Not their fault though. Just a learning lesson. Our waiter John was above and beyond kind, sweet and hardworking!! Our food was delivered hot, our drinks were never empty, and our bellies were happy. The carne asada fries were delicious! I was simple and got chicken quesadilla since I was not super hungry. I loved that it came with sour cream and lettuce. Size was reasonable, tasted great and was a good size. Please do not pay attention to the "good" reviews on here. I am 100% mexican from Los Ángeles and i was craving some food from back home and decided to give this place a shot and i was extremely disappointed! Starting with the salsa (canned) that you get in the beginning is bad. I ordered the green chicken enchiladas. There wasn't even enough sauce on the enchiladas. The beans tasted like NOTHING there was no flavor. I would say that even the canned ones would have tasted better. Then moving to when they brought out the food the plate was supper hot but the food was cold the cheese wasn't even melted. (The cheese on top of the enchiladas & the one enchilada that I asked for with cheese) I will not be going back. Not to mention mine and my husbands stomachs were hurting that night. (We had not eaten anything after that bad meal) so I know it was this place. If you want to be disappointed then be my guest but this is NOT authentic Mexican food. I would know. Came here a few months ago and was throughly disappointed. Mediocre food, flies everywhere, the AC I'm assuming wasn't working because it was burning hot, and worst of all the service. It took forever for us to even get waters and didn't a receive a single refill until it was time for the check. It took forever to get the food, but it was decently busy that day, so we were willing to give it the benefit of the doubt. But here we are a few months later and all is the same expect maybe the AC works now. Although we did receive faster service, we were quite literally the only people in the restaurant. I like the ambiance and potential this place holds. There's a nice outdoor sitting area that isn't be utilized, their flatscreen TVs scattered throughout with weird ads and random cartoons playing throw off the nice Mexican styled architecture. All this place really needs is new management and staff to improve the overall dining experience. It's in a great spot in Hampton, but isn't living up to its potential with it's piss poor service, lack of efficiency, and an overall lack of care. Hope to see change. read more

Don't be fooled by the nice location, this was some of the worst Mexican food I've ever had. About 20% of the meat in my tacos el pastor was joint/fat/inedible and I had to spit it out on my plate. The tortillas had no flavor and tasted slightly old. None of the taco ingredients had any flavor, I had to douse everything with spicy salsa to invent a flavor profile. It seemed clear that other factors than the food were out of sorts, the staff seemed nice enough but lacked a system and some of the booths and floor were in disrepair. This burrito had no flavor at all my meat was over cooked and very dry. The queso was even lacking. I've never had such an awful experience with Mexican cuisine. The burrito had no cilantro, no pico, no queso inside, no seasoning no nothing just bland. My friend had fish tacos which were also bland. Their white dip was very thick and had a consistency of a thick pudding. The Service, was ok, the crowd there was annoying to be around. The margaritas are okay. Dining experience over all subpar. This is my 3rd time dining with them and 2nd experience eating in the restaurant I gave them a fair chance. Just NO.
