I was surprised upon entry to see how the interior of this long time venue has been redesigned and opened up. This is a large restaurant with private spaces and places for groups. Everyone can be seated comfortably. It is very large and filled with illusions of Mayan Ruins and a mild rainforest vibe. In addition to the interior redesign the menu is completely redesigned. Gone is the stereotypical Speedy Gonzales lunch special. The extensive offerings are replaced with such interesting combinations as a steak, chicken and shrimp burrito, described by my friend as "Delicious," and spinach enchiladas. We were offered tea refills and one to go. I had the spinach enchiladas and was not happy. The cooked spinach inside was served unaccompanied. There was a nice sauce on top but I was glad I swapped the rice for refried beans so I could mix up the beans, which were a bit too wet for me, with the spinach. Will not choose that again. Prices are higher as well. My lunch special and tea was $15 plus tip. Service was attentive although some mistakes were made and corrected, probably due to a language barrier. Plaza Azteca has a really interesting atmosphere, with décor inspired by replica Mayan ruins that makes the space feel lively and unique. The service was pretty good--our server was attentive and checked in often. Portions are generous, and overall the food was pretty good and satisfying. One small downside for me was the pickled onions, which weren't quite to my taste, but that's more of a personal preference than a dealbreaker. In my personal opinion, I think our service was terrible. Firstly, we were waiting for approximately 15 minutes for white sauce and our order wasn't for another 5, our food arrived at the table with a different server in less than 2 minutes, after that our original waiter had the audacity to ask for a tip, HELL NO! He then was embarrassed and went to clean another table, that was the first right thing he had done in our visit. if you have a waiter with spiky hair and golden or silver grills on his teeth, politely ask for another server, he is terribly slow and is very rude to his customers and still will ask for a tip. read more

This was our first time at this location in.. years. We were in the area and stopped in as Plaza is a go to since we get chips and salsa right away. It was interesting to see how different this location was compared to one we always go to closer to us (WHICH IS AMAZING). Holy upgrade!!! I do not know when the renovations were done because it's been 7 years since we were stationed at Langley AFB, but wow!!! I love what they have done with the place! It looks great. The moment we walked in our jaws were dropped... with masks on of course! We were seated right away at a clean table spaced well away from others. Our waitress, smelled good. Ha! You know, if you think I would start by saying"if you've been to one Plaza Azteca, you've been to them all" well you'd be right. These Tex Mex style restaurants are all over the place, in every region and in every city. It's not authentic Mexican food but it is very close with an American Tex Mex feel to it. I have seven visits here on Yelp, the reason why is you can get good food, fast, and for a good price. The portions are very generous. Service is alway friendly but, there is something about these servers that give me a sense of "untruss" that I have not been able to put my finger on. I had my mouth all worked up for a Burrito all day, couldn't wait to get here for one. I just wanted to pick it up, and bite into it. I had the Burrito Mex....it was stuffed with grilled steak and onions. My wife had a hefty portion of steak, chicken and shrimp fajitas. Both meals (like most of the meals here) came with rice and beans. It was served fresh, hot and fast. Now here is where I get bummed. I keep forgetting to tell my server this, cut when the platter call for cheese, its on everything on the plate. It looks like this white sauce and it really does not do the food any good. They put in on my beans, rice and burrito which already had guacamole and pico-de-gallo so that burrito that I was looking forward to picking up with my hands is now ruined with all these cheese and sauce. Instead of eating it with my hands, I had to eat it with a knife and pork. My night gets worst. Wife only made one fajita, so she had a ton of steak, chicken, shrimp and peppers left-over. So we had our server bring out a to-go box. Unfortunately as we were leaving, we were distracted by something and end up leaving the food on the table. Arriving at home just 10 mins later, I realized I had forgotten the food. When I arrive, they had already bussed the table. I ask a server if they held on to it, she just pissed me off and said "I'm sorry, it been thrown away." Maybe had the servers paid more attention to the customers instead of all the "horse-play" they would have notice that we left our food. I was really bummed about leaving it and the simple fact that the prices have went up so I pretty much wasted $20 on that meal. That really bothered me. Well, I guess I'll give them another try. There are several Plaza Azteca Mexican restaurants in Hampton Roads, Virginia. The one I'm referring to is the one in Hampton at the Town Center Way. I've been to this one several times, as it's near where I live. Our visiting New York Grubbing Buddies were looking for some fill-you-up Mexican food when staying with us this trip. Plaza Azteca was the best stop! The place was loud but not too loud, and the waitress was more than pleasant and entertaining, as well. We started out with drinks, including Mango and Raspberry Margaritas and a delightful Bonita Blue. We also had Tacos Al Pastor, a Burrito Deluxe, Carne Asada, Molcajete Azteca, fresh table side guacamole, and super queso dip. That's a lot of food, I know, but if you do go, these are the greatest tasting items on the menu, in my opinion. I often say if the folks (waitstaff) are as nice as can be and the food's incredible, I will always come back (Thanks Mia). Let me be clear. My issue was not with the food. The food was good. My issue is the fact that a gratuity was added to our party without telling us. I have looked at the menu online and in-person and I cannot see where the establishment states that parties of six (I assume, as we were a party of six) or more will be automatically charged a gratuity. I understand that some restaurants do this automatically, and I'm not a fan. But, if a restaurant engages in this practice, it falls to the server to tell the table that they have been charged an automatic gratuity. Otherwise, it comes off as predatory. I tipped 30% in cash, which I think is important during these trying times. We only later figured out that a gratuity was added. As we were running late for a movie, we decided that making that on time was more important than alerting a manager that evening. I honestly feel as if I was taken advantage of by our server that evening. So. Watch out when going here. They know they're a place people frequent before going to their show, and sometimes, it would seem, bank on you not taking the time to examine your check. read more

The waitstaff works really hard to keep the operation working as efficiently as possible. I could see it in the way they quickly ran food out and helped out tables that didn't belong to them. I got two Coronas but had to ask for the lime. thankfully, they brought them out upon my request. For dinner, I went with the churrasco steak with grilled onion, rice and pico, hot salsa, and tostones. The steak was a little spicier than I expected, but it was juicy, well seasoned, and flavorful. I wasn't too hungry when I came here and I was feeling sluggish from eating so much meat in days prior. I saw the guy making the guacamole and knew I would be ordering that. The table side-ish guacamole was delicious and I ordered the chimichanga supreme for my main meal. The Chimichanga was excellent and the good food made me hungry and I ended up polishing my plate. The food was super flavorful and delicious. My friends also enjoyed their meals as well. The service chips and salsa came with ranch sauce instead of creamy queso which was little weird. My friends also enjoyed the huge margaritas that they served in the fishbowls. OMG Plaza had their B Team tonight! It is Thursday so it's not like the place is jumping. We got here at 6:30 pm and no one came to the table until almost 6:40. I got tacos Al Pastor, it's supposed to have onions and cilantro along with pineapple adobo but it was a little skimp on onions and heavy on the pineapple. They forgot the sauce on the side. The meat was flavorful but kinda dry. They came by once to see if we needed more drinks. We were done with our meal for so long I had to go ask for the check. I have been here before and it was not this terrible ... not sure what happened tonight. You should know it's bad when I cannot finish my margarita. Not really sure that it was actually a margarita. Now I ordered it frozen at 945 and was told that frozen was not available.... I could only get on the rocks. I said fine... but then he brought me something that I could not drink. I have not seen service this bad in forever. We arrived around 930 and they close at 1030... apparently that is a crime in this restaurant.
