Having completed two years at PSA, my children will enter kindergarten this fall knowing they have accomplished developmentally appropriate but challenging tasks. In addition to ensuring that students achieve academic milestones, PSA teaches children to be worldly citizens and considerate members of the community. Their students are aware of a great big world behind their town but they appreciate the opportunities and worth within reach. Procedurally, PSA is an efficient business that effectively handles business matters. Its school policies are reasonable and we appreciated their efforts to ensure the safety and well-being of its students, teachers and staff. PSA and its community of students, parents, teachers and administrators will always be a part of our lives. When I cried at graduation (truth), they were tears of joy that my children were thriving and simply, growing up. But they were also tears of appreciation and gratitude for PSA. First, my review of pre-k: I am impressed with many things at this preschool. Most of all, the staff. Everyone, from the secretary to the director, is wonderful, warm, friendly, and nurturing. Just the kind of people you want your children to be around all day - if you can't be! All the teachers have college degrees and are certified teachers. The classroom aides are also wonderful. They are mostly mature women and college students who are studying education. They have real professional development which the teachers and staff have to take part in and are encouraged to pursue additional training on their own. The curriculum they use is really fantastic - it's all hands-on. My girls are learning geography, foreign language, science, basic math, and reading/letters. At her recent evaluation for kindergarten, the teacher said my daughter was "advanced" for her age. It must be from MMO, because it certainly isn't from me! The school's hours are flexible and the director has been accommodating in every way possible when we had some crazy stuff going on with our work schedules. They're a non-profit (and non-sectarian) and you can tell by the way they put children first. The facilities are OK. They are located in an old, beautiful, church. There are stairs, but the high teacher-child ratio (I think it's like 1:2) make up for the multiple staircases and windy hallways. The space is bright and modern and the toys are new and clean, and the tables and chairs are new-ish looking. There is a big gym for playtime on bad-weather days and a nice big playground outside that is getting updated. The kids go out just about every day. They are adding additional security features to the main lobby area. Now, camp: The girls really enjoyed the summer camp program. They were outside a lot of the time, getting fresh air and playing on the playground in the water (there is no pool but they have sprinklers) and taking part in science experiments. The staff was good about making sure my Irish-skinned girls didn't get burned. We would go again in a heartbeat but my husband wants the girls to take swimming lessons so they are going to a different program this year that offers swimming lessons during camp. One thing I really like about MMO, and think is worth mentioning is the diversity: of the staff (male and female) and students. Children speak other languages in this school and that really reflects the city of Montclair, unlike some of other places I visited. My only complaint is that there isn't a kindergarten. My town doesn't offer full time K, so I don't know what I'm going to do next year!

I am so pleased with the center. My son has been going here since August 2017 and my daughter just…read morestarted in July 2020 when they reopened after COVID. I have been here through the days of Sue and Blythe and now with Alaya. I have seen multiple people in the management team after Sue left the center and was here through the rocky times. The thing that kept me here during those rocky times were the amazing teachers. There was never a day where I thought that my child was in danger or not being taken care of by his teachers. Alaya was given a mess a little over a year ago and has really brought together a great team of management who brought the center around. They have all been very open to listening to the parents on what was not working well under the old management and working with us to find ways to fix it. My son is currently in the preschool class with Ms. Dede and Ms. Christina and he loves it. He gets sad on the weekends when he realizes that he will not be seeing his teachers and friends. When he was home during quarantine we connected with his teachers and messaged them throughout because he missed them. These teachers really became a part of his life and treat him so well. Because of COVID, things are harder now since I don't get to speak face to face with his teachers as often as I used to but they do their best to write tons of information into his tadpole reports and send home plenty of pictures and videos through the tadpole app. They also come to the front door to speak to me at pick up if he is the last in the class, or will pop their head out of the outside door of the classroom to speak with me if I have a question for them. They have taught him so much in preschool this year in just over a month and I look forward to seeing him grow and learn more as the year progresses. When he moved up from his discovery preschool class we were so disappointed to leave behind his last teacher Ms. Judy but Ms. Dede and Ms. Christina have been just as good. Infant has been a little harder to transition back to as the teachers in the infant classes are different than when my son went through there so I don't have a previous relationship with them. I rely a lot on the updates I get from Christina (management) when I pick up as she is assigned to help out in the infant class (the management gets assigned to different classes to try to limit the exposure between classes). I receive constant communication from her teachers giving me information on when she slept and how much she has eaten. She just started walking so I am now getting regular phone calls about the normal bumps all 11 month olds go through when they are learning to walk and fall down. The calls from Ms. Julie are always so pleasant and she makes me feel reassured that she is okay and keeping me informed so I am not worried if I see a little bump. I get pictures of her playing with different things in the class. And just the other day I received the cutest video of them showing her laminated leaves and teacher her the colors. They really do a good job of finding ways to instill learning even in the very young classes. It was really scary to send the kids back to daycare due to COVID, but there is no one that I would trust more than the team at this center to do everything in their power to keep all of these kids safe. I have never once even caught a glimpse of an adult (in the building or even outside walking to their car) not wearing their mask properly. Unfortunately, not being able to go into the classrooms, I cannot say what they look like but I know before COVID they were constantly cleaning and they would have a bin for toys that needed to be sanitized which they would add to during the day and not bring back out until they had been cleaned. We send in a clean blanket and mask every day to reduce germs and no outside toys are allowed in (even for their normal Friday show and tell) as they are reducing the germs everywhere they can. There are strict rules around returning to the center after being sick and take the kids temperature and ask the health questions every morning during drop off. My daughter just started daycare for the first time so I have no doubt that she will get sick several times this winter even with all of the precautions that they are taking (as she already has actually) but it has been so much less in the first 3 months in daycare than it was with my first child, which goes to show just how much they are cleaning (because lets be honest, babies have no immune system and put everything in their mouth so they are going to get sick).

Nadia the director helped us figure out a schedule to transition him in before he was full time. Then this was his first time in full time care and all of the teachers were so warm and caring that he was immediately eager to go to school every day. It is a fairly small school so our son was thrilled to get to know some of the "big" kids and eager to move up a class each year. He constantly amazes us with all he has learned at LPP and he loves the enrichment classes he takes like art, dance, science, and music. Since the school is in downtown Maplewood, the kids get to spend outdoor time in Memorial Park, walk over to the library, and explore on walks. We greatly appreciate the great hours as two commuting parents. Most important to us is how we see LPP helping our son become a kind and caring citizen of the world. Our family's experience with Montclair Cooperative School was devastating. After touring and being…read moreassured that our son -- a twice-exceptional, academically gifted child on the Autism spectrum -- could be supported, we submitted his records. Almost immediately, the admissions office reversed course and told us they would not move forward with his application because of his disability, saying he would be "better served" in public school. His academic strengths and test scores were ignored. This is not just disappointing, it is discriminatory. The school has accepted hundreds of thousands of dollars in taxpayer-funded grants and forgivable loans, which means it is legally bound under the ADA, Section 504, IDEA, and the New Jersey Law Against Discrimination to provide equal access. Instead, it shut the door on our son because of his diagnosis. We pursued every available appeal, including with the State of New Jersey. Even though the state acknowledged the facts, they declined to pursue the case further -- not because discrimination wasn't present, but because they lacked confidence in prevailing in court. Families should know that if your child has a disability, this school may exclude them rather than work with you. For a school that markets itself as progressive and community-oriented, our experience was the opposite. Parents of neurodiverse children: proceed with extreme caution.

My daughter happens to be approaching the pre-K age. I WAS (keyword is WAS!) considering Montclair community pre-K as one of our options. I approached the booth and began looking at some of the literature. One of the staff members approached me and immediately said "do you live in Montclair?". I said no. She proceeded to tell me that my child was not eligible for financial aid because we did not live in Montclair. (FYI, I did not ask about financial aid. We DO NOT even need financial aid. I did not get the chance to ask any questions. Her first thought was that we must need financial aid because we don't live in Montclair). I thought to myself OK, not the best way to sell your institution, but whatever. I proceeded to ask some questions regarding the institution (i.e. classroom size, teacher to student ratio, curriculum, etc.) She then AGAIN continued to tell me how my child would not be eligible for financial aid because I did not live in Montclair. I tossed the brochure on the table and walked away. Your institution just lost a potential new student. If this woman spoke to anyone else, whom does not live in Montclair, i'm sure they were turned off by her abrasive and dismissive attitude. You may not want her to continue to be the face of your institution.

This is my son's second year at the Pre-K and I truly love this school. His teacher this year is a…read moremaster teacher that is able to embed academic learning within themed-based units. The students most recently opened a cafe in their classroom where they used math, reading and writing to create and run the cafe. Most importantly, he has consistently learned about empathy and compassion for others, in particular, his classmates. Character development is explicitly taught and experienced in weekly activities. Truly all the staff is incredibly kind and wonderful. I find it shocking that there is another review that felt differently. The directors of the school, not only know my son's name that goes to the school, but also the names of my two smaller children. When you come to the pre-k, it feels like family.
