Good morning world! To those of who are not my friends and for any reason stopped here at my…read morefacebook page today or anyday in the future please take a moment to read this... My son Pedro Henrique Duarte, is in 8th grade, he goes to Ann st here in Newark. He was accepted at Arts High School. I am really upset, because Ann St banned my son from walking with his class on the graduation cerimony this coming thursday the 23rd 2016. He goes to Ann St since first grade. He used to go to Hawkins st and he was hurt there almost everyday, poked with a pencil by another kid. We moved to another house, at that time, to a place where would allow him a spot at Ann st. in hopes that Ann st would be a better school for my child, not knowing that 7 years later, I would be living a nightmare. As you can see its now 6 am and i cant sleep, full of hate, anger and deep sadness, trying to understand, why would a school, considered one of the best in town, cause so much pain in my heart, (for I know my son is strong, and is holding up pretry well, but I am not so strong, and I havent slept in days crying). My son is an artist, he draws, he designs, he just created his own tshirt and hat collection called Pluto. My son, my Pedro, my baby boy, he made a mistake of making drawings in some tests, he even used the word Pluto. My son is a very smart child, creative, however, he speaks his mind, hes not afraid of showing his feelings, and sharing them, and he did that a few times, once again during tests, instead of answering what was being asked in a question he wrote what he thought was right, not thinking of the consequences, he was severely punished, banned from all activities, including trips and his 8th grade cerimony. I found out about this last week, I had no idea, I know that maybe he wouldnt since He was "warned", in front of his father, (i couldnt go to meetings anymore, i was feeling overwhelmed, knowing my son was being bullied by his teachers for being himself, i was avoiding fights and telling them exactly how i feel also, and causing more drama) anyways, my son was warned that if he didnt do "better" meaning if he didnt stop being himself, and stop drawing, he would would be banned from his 8th grade cerimony. Not satisfied of taking my child's moment away from him... that he worked 8 years for, now they are using power to abuse my son psychologically. On friday, he was asked to go get the "boxes" of the yearbooks, however he wasnt given one, he was told the yearbook was a "privilege" and he wouldnt get one until thursday 1pm, the last day of school. Really,? out of all the children, you whoever you are, you person without a heart, you had to make my son, go carry a box with his yearbook inside and not give him one? Mind you, dear reader of this "venting letter" we paid for his yearbook, thats not called a privilege. My son is a great child, a boy with a big heart, you can ask all his teachers, since first grade, Mrs Gaspar, 2nd Mrs Calabrese, 3rd Mrs Piombino, 4th Mrs Salmon, 5th Mr Pastor, 6th Dos Santos, 7th Mrs Souza, I was never called in by any of them, with complaints of my son. He was never a straight A or B student, they all said the same thing, Pedro is a great kid, he is just lazy, if he works harder he can get an A or a B. Nothing has changed since then, he still gets bad grades, even F's, however hes now 14, a teenager full of hormones, whose only "crime" was to be an artist , oh he also had an incident in 6th grade, he ran away from the playground during recess, and he was punished for the rest of school year, he couldnt participate in any activities, or go out during recess til the end of that school year... The school was never held responsible, any one can walk in or out, but its the children's fault? besides that my son never did anything wrong, i dont understand why they hate him so much. I dont know if you are a mother, but try to understand the pain i am going thru, trying to tell my son, to forget about these people, who are hurting him so much, because he did what he does best, drawing. The vice principal Mrs Marques, told me that my son's "arts" wont take him anywhere, he still needs math, science, and english, in complete despair, i grabbed my son's hand, and walked out of the principal's office, feeling so much guilt, from trying to save my child, from a "bad" school, and taking him to a much "worse" place. Maybe if Pedro had stayed at Hawkins St, he would be graduating on thursday with his other classmates, we would be seating at Hawkins st auditorium, applauding him, cheering for him, and making plans to celebrate afterwards. Not this thursday, I plan to keep Pedro home. A very sad and angry mother Janaina Pifano
