So I think it would be pretty obvious by looking at me, that this would not be my ideal place to eat. And you would be correct. Not that I don't enjoy healthy food, I just want as much food as possible and in as much quantity as possible. But, sometimes when you're traveling with other people, you have to give in to other options. That being said, I'm glad I was able to find something enjoyable. Which would have been difficult because there were so many choices to be made. I could come back three times a day for fifteen years and try sketching new each time. I could also be lying. But seriously. Choice variety 10/10. My choice bowl was a kale/banana/pineapple/coconut milk base (green bowl), with sliced bananas, blueberries, granola, and hemp seeds. I like fruity/citrusy/juicy fruits, so this sounded the best. I had zero expectations, but was pleasantly surprised. The decision to mix it all together was probably a good one and I ended up eating it all like a weird green bowl banana blueberry cereal. It was a little less fruity than I expected, but still had solid flavor. Taste level 7/10. Because I'm a gluttonous hound, I also thought it would be fun to get a smoothie to add to my already expanding gut. I chose the kowabunga with included banana, blueberry, pineapple, and coconut milk. I expected it to sweeter than it actually was. Though I expect all my foods to be sweet. Flavor profile 6/10. The atmosphere was pretty much par for the course for an establishment like this. Nice open area, waiting chairs, dine in. Several people waiting for to-go orders. The service wasn't terrible. Two workers running the show. That could very well have been the reason there was such a wait on our food. Though I can't imagine putting all the things we ordered together was a speedy situation. Service speed 6/10. Service accuracy 10/10. The three stars ultimately came from the flavors of the items I got not meeting my flavors criteria. Well...this is a mixed review. My youngest daughter was craving an açaí bowl, when no one else really likes them. So we gave it a shot. We came in about 30 mins before they closed so idk how happy they were to serve us but they did none the less. The bowls looked great but we just left with mixed feelings about açaí. The location was well decorated and festive and a cool environment...we just confirmed that we just aren't big fans of açaí. I definitely agree that the acai bowls we got here just tasted a lot better than others I've had anywhere else and did appear to taste "fresher" and more authentic than other places, so I really love that about Playa Bowls, which is perfect timing because I noticed one just opened up near me! The vibes inside instantly transport you to a more tropical atmosphere, which was much needed on a cold January winter day in Michigan! The staff was super friendly as well! Both my friend and my bowls were made wrong the first time around, but when we mentioned that to the staff, they fixed both right away, which is much appreciated! The bowls are also MASSIVE! So I was completely stuffed halfway through - the cold might've had something to do with that too where it was so cold and on an already cold day, I just couldn't eat more in general. But what I did eat was tasty and Playa Bowls has an extensive menu of not just bowls, but also smoothies and juices and more, that you can enjoy as well! Overpriced for what you get. Two oatmeals and two smoothies run you about $45. The biggest issue came when we went to get our food (based on the time they told us to come back) and we were told it wasn't ready. After watching the staff chat away - they finally looked up to share the food had been waiting the whole time. Mmmm - nothing like slightly warm oatmeal :( All in all - the oatmeal to topping ratio is way off. But you may be interested to know that you can customize your own bowl... for $8 PLUS $1 for each topping. EACH TOPPING!!! A small scoop of brown sugar is a $1, some banana slices are $1... pretty soon you have an oatmeal cup for the price of a steak. As soon as I walked in I noticed many people sitting around without food. at first I ignored and thought they must be low staffed but as I ordered and stood waiting for my food I noticed everyone else was also waiting. The staff working today were all standing around talking and joking and not getting anything done. It took 10 minutes for 1 iced coffee to be made. The workers kind of just group together and all seem to have to do the same task. Smoothies and bowls are fine. Not worth the $12 price tag paired with the absolute worst service I've ever experienced. The 17 year olds behind the counter need some serious supervision and customer service training. I understand the longer wait times as this is a busy establishment, but when I watch customers that showed up after me, ordering, finishing their bowl, and leaving before I even get my order, I will politely ask an employee about my order. I did not appreciate the girl behind the counter accusing me of being incorrect and rolling her eyes while proceeding to slam my smoothie bowl on the counter in front of my face. After years of working in the customer service industry, I couldn't imagine treating a customer with such disrespect. I wish I remembered her name, but regardless I will not be returning.
