I've been to this cafe and market years ago and was pleased that it has kept up its good quality and service. If you're a plant based person and are looking for a good place to shop for some plant based goods this is your place. I was happy with their selection of plant based products. They had cheeses, milks, pickled goods, olive bar, fresh fruits, fresh vegetables, and snacks! The vibe of the place was very nice too. Both times we stopped in other patrons were very friendly and courteous. As for the service both time the person who checked us out was very friendly and the one even had a good sense of humor. I'm not sure why Yelp doesn't have the cafe and grocery store separate, but I've got so little time on my hands to fix this. I used to have all this time to surf the net at work, and those times have passed. I'm not going to lie, I miss those days... I digress. I do enjoy this place a LOT. The food at the cafe is good, but not great. The chips they serve with the sandwiches are boring. At least some kettle chips would be fun. These are some kind of corn chips that make me yawn just thinking about them. However, the sandwiches are tasty - especially the turkey with kim chee. Yum (and spicy - woo hoo). Additionally, OF COURSE there are vegetarian options. The grocery items are also good. The upsetting thing is that they couldn't carry my favorite yogurt (Siggi's whole milk plain)... because apparently it doesn't sell well enough. Oh people... plain whole milk is where it's at!!! How can you not be on board with that? :) Anyway, they were still at least good about communicating that rejection of my request. The prices here are a bit steep... but the selection is pretty good. I find, however, that I do need to go to two grocery stores when I shop here to get all the things I need (and that's really not a ton, e.g., the yogurt - which I have to go to Eden's to buy). Honestly, I'd probably go to Eden's for all my shopping, but they don't have goat cheese. And this girl just can not LIVE without goat cheese... enter Oryana. All said, this is a solid choice for your TC grocery needs. I cannot see my life proceeding without this place, so please go there. Buy stuff. Join the co-op. Enjoy, as I know you will. This place is a gem. We stopped here for brunch- easily eaten at the picnic benches outside with a lovely view- and could not have enjoyed it more. I had the vegan Reuben which was just perfect and kept me full almost all day, along with an excellent cup of coffee. My friend had an Italian chicken grain bowl. We shared a wheat free vegan chocolate cookie for dessert. There were easily half a dozen other things I wanted to eat on that cafe menu, even though their selection was limited due to Covid. Don't get me wrong, the food wasn't terrible but it wasn't anything that would make me want to come back to Lake Street Cafe...def a solid 3 star rating. Lentil Soup - A nice hearty soup, but it was missing all the wonderful Middle-Eastern spices that truly makes for a delicious lentil soup! Cherry BBQ Chicken Sandwich (local baked chicken, cherry BBQ sauce, red onion, mozzarella, and lettuce on focaccia bread) - Just okay! You get what you pay for. I will shop and eat at co-op in every city at every chance I get. I am rarely disappointed because the food is healthy and fresh. The Lake Street Cafe at Oryana does not disappoint. They offer such a vast array of sandwiches, soups, baked goods, cold items and specialty foods, it's heaven. My favorite three items would have to be the Thai Peanut Tofu Wrap (rich and creamy homemade tofu, it's more like a block of cream cheese, not lying) the Whomper veggie burger, and the grilled veggie panini. The panini features an amazing combo of sweet potato, red onion, avocado and tomato. Drool. Shoot, I also love the fresh rolls from the cooler section. When in Traverse, I could eat here for three meals a day and usually do. I should also mention....lemonade! Chai teas! Smoothies and juices! The staff is extremely nice, recycling and compost is available, clean restrooms and a lovely outdoor seating area. I'm in love with this co-op cafe. read more

We mainly come for lunch in the cafe, and buy a few groceries on the side. The recent redesign of the cafe area makes for much more pleasant and less crowded experience on that end of the store. Love their soups, their Mexican casserole in the new hot bar, their crush-on-demand pepita butter, and their selection of cookies. The drinks on tap in the deli seem a bit more uneven--The fresh lemonade tasted quite bitter (maybe crossed with lime juice?) and the mango lassi also had some bitterness. The staff is always very pleasant at the deli, so don't hesitate to let them know if some of the drinks taste off. read more

I haven't lived in Traverse City since 2004, and haven't been home for Thanksgiving in a few years, so when I went back for Thanksgiving this year and had to do some shopping for my big meal I decided to look around to see what all was the fuss was about. You see, now that I live in Ann Arbor and have access to all the "cool/hip/natural" food markets & grocery stores I've been a bit spoiled - whenever I come home and try to find specific things with which to make a meal I end up being disappointed. I decided to check out Oryana after hearing good things about it. I was pretty impressed! The produce, while lacking in quantity and size, had pretty much everything that all the other stores in the area didn't cover. They have a great bulk section for getting everything from oats to flour to protein powder to chocolate coated candies. It was definitely fun to peruse. Prices seemed a LITTLE steeper than what I'm used to, but that's to be expected in a slightly more remote area such as Traverse and it's not nearly as pricey as Whole Foods down here. The staff was friendly & courteous without being overbearing, and the quality of everything I purchased was up to snuff. C approved. read more

This is a good grocery store for those who want to eat clean, or are tired of the unhealthy food options that seem to be everywhere in Northern Michigan. It's about a two minute drive from the city center. Or you can bike or walk (if you carpool or ride a bike, you get some coins off of your bill). Also full disclosure: I'm a tourist. There's everything you need there. I'd like to see more boxed food that you can just heat up and serve (like couscous or quinoa or pasta) with spices added. My biggest complaint is that their prepared food is pretty expensive. I would almost call it overpriced, but I don't know what the going rate is for anything, but it seemed excessive to me. My favorite thing there is a fresh chocolate cherry cookie. I think I had about five of them. Oryana's is nothing more than a high priced boutique market, masquerading as something that they can only hope to achieve. As far as the 'food bar' is concerned. A complete lack of imagination, a complete lack of desire to create new & healthy options,( constant rotation of chicken & red meat products, low grade styles & no flavours ). OMG! This market is incredible! I wish we had something like this back home in metro Detroit. Whole Foods does not compare. Whole Foods prepared foods are loaded with canola oil. Oryana foods contain olive oil. There is also a cute Café that prepares fresh foods made to order, and a nice sit down area to dine in or have coffee or a juice/smoothie made fresh with all organic fruits and veggies. Compared to Central Market in Texas, Whole Foods and Trader Joe's, Oryana is probably more like four starts, but locally, it is easily earns five stars. It is the best place to grab local and organic everything, bulk foods and ready made sandwiches, meals, soups, breakfast and other interesting deli items, such as quinoa tabouli and curry cashew chicken salad. Employees are wonderful, incredibly helpful and knowledgeable. Those with food allergies will also find a nice selection of grocery options. Parking can be tough at busier times, but usually there are some spaces in each of the two lots or on one of the two side streets. Personal care items, homeopathic items and vitamins/minerals/herbal supplements are also available. Appalled at the prices, but I have no way of knowing why they're so high relative to what I have back in Seattle. Guessing it has something to do with the cost of transport. Suggestions: 1) carry POM brand. I wanted pomegranate juice but was afraid to step outside the known quantity, as I've been burned before. 2) please carry sparkling water and diet soda.
