What's not to love in a place that has the three following things: 1.a baby changing station where the mat is organic, 2. crayons and books for little kids to keep busy while their people enjoy coffee and a kid sized picnic table , 3. is dog friendly (they bring ice water to fill bowls they provide) AND 4. social awareness (a community bulletin board), information about composting and a call to stop genocide (with facts and statistics updated daily). We stopped in for a latte and enjoyed the overall vibe which is crunchy, earth mama and hippie-dippy. I mean all of this in a good way. The coffee is great - very smooth, not acidic at all and 100% drinkable. In fact it is kind of addictive because it's so dang good.l! They also sell all things related to coffee: scales, beans, everything you can think of. They also sell other things like olive oil and a bit over-priced baked goods as well as the usual self promoting wearable merchandise..

Tucked away behind the hospital, Higher Grounds Coffee is a hidden gem in Traverse City. I have nothing but good things to say about the coffee, the space and the people. It's one of my favorite places to stop when I'm up north!

If you love really good coffee and you seek it out wherever you are, it's easy to find these days just about anywhere. There are tons of spaces in cities both large and small that are not only serving up delicious freshly roasted, highly caffeinated goodness, but that are doing it in aesthetically pleasing environments. But sometimes you get lucky and everything is all there in one place at the same time from the overall vibes down to what's in the cup, and you end up having a coffee that makes you wish you lived across the street from the place. This is one of those places. So good. Expert baristas. Fantastic roasts. Love it. Would return daily if it was in my local area.

Friendly service. They want you to have a good experience and will offer suggestions if they know you've combined some ingredients in your drink that will distract from its awesomeness. 1980s nostalgia music playing in the background really sealed the deal for me... that and the crazy tall windows! So cozy!! Love this place!! I will definitely be back!!

Amazing place to read a book and soak up nature. The specialty roasts are also a must so stock up. Their Oatmilk Mochas are my go to here.

Great fresh coffee. Hard to beat. We've ordered the coffee online before since we live downstate, but had never visited the place in person. So, when we were in the neighborhood, we made a point to check it out and buy some coffee. The store was inviting, and the staff was friendly and helpful. Definitely worth the visit.

Higher Grounds Coffee is the best coffee on the campus of The Villages at Grand Traverse Commons, a 1885 psychiatric hospital turned into redevelopment for shopping, restaurants, etc. It's just off the main campus in a large space where they brew and roast coffee. The menu is large and they even make specialty drinks like miel lattes and mochas. We ordered both and the coffee used is quality. Both drinks were sweet, which I loved, but my wife didn't prefer. The space is beautifully decorated with plants everywhere and window seating. Large windows give view into the roasting space. Bathrooms are in the back. If you like quality coffee, go here when visiting The Villages at Grand Traverse Commons.

Delicious coffee and wonderful service. The two women that worked there and helped me as a "first timer", were great.

Owl Eye Coffee Roasters

(9 reviews)

I stopped in on a Monday late afternoon and got a chai tea latte iced. They do not brew it…read morethemselves but it is made with a syrup that is made especially for them. It was delicious. She asked the sweetness level and milk I wanted and added cinnamon to the top. There is indoor and outdoor seating. There was someone working at a table with a laptop and there are power outlets. There is free street parking. The husband and wife owners supply coffee to local Restaurants. The husband roasts and grinds the beans in house. They have a few baked goods from 2 Moon Bakery.

I was on my way home to Indianapolis from Traverse City and wanted some good coffee. When I…read moresearched coffee this place popped up and I was intrigued. I walked in I was greeted with a friendly smile (I think by the owner), and told some things about the menu/flavors. I love a good local coffee shop that cares about the quality of their beans and roasts and this is exactly what I got. I wanted a hot coffee for the morning and a cold brew for a later pick me up for the drive. The owner said the Tanzanian bean was her favorite and I went for it. I have to say it tasted soooo good! So many great notes and flavors. When I ordered my cold brew she asked "do you like it strong?" And I really do. All of this to say... I had a fantastic experience from the time I walked in the shop to the last sip of cold brew. The service was great, the atmosphere was nice, but the coffee was immaculate. Honestly, when I'm near Owl Eye again on my way to Beulah in the summer I will be stopping with my family. And if they have beans for sale I will be buying some bags! If you like GREAT coffee, supporting local, look no further. Get some good coffee!
