I drove 30 minutes to this location for a first time sell. I had two bags filled with clothes including fabletics, Lululemon and 2 purses name brand items. I was never told when dropping off that they would not even look at the items if they were in big trash bags. The guy at the front desk said it would be an hour and 20 minutes for the wait and to come back then. He also said next time they would rather have items in the reusable totes which i understood and thanked him for letting me know for next time. He never said they wouldnt even bother opening the bags i dropped off. Then i got notified about 25 minutes later my Sell was completed, i knew something was weird when that happened. I went back and was told they didnt take not even one item! That it was most long sleeves and sweaters which i knew that was an obvious lie. I had maybe 4-5 long sleeve items and 1 sweater. The clothes did not even change a little bit from how i dropped them. They ripped the bag a tiny bit to make it seem like they went through it. There was a coach tabby in one of the bags between clothes too!!!! Thats how i really knew they didnt even bother to open the bags. I would never go back to this location. Terrible customer service. I've been to this place before covid and it used to be really good (about 2-3 years ago). Even before covid hit the staff turned out to be extremely rude, I understand that business may have picked up after covid due to everyone home and cleaning so it can get overwhelming but even before all of this the staff just always seems annoyed. They don't really take much, and the things they have to sell in store are NOT cute. My first time here I made 90$ and have never came close to that again it's almost like they hook you in your first time then anytime you come back they give you 20 dollars and send you on your way. It's actually one of the few thrift stores that have a variety of styles to choose from. There were a few band tees and black jeans. My friend said they even got a pair of Doc Martens from here for $20. It was very clean, the changing rooms were also clean. Boutique-y thrift shop. Clean, well organized & didn't have the thrift shop smell. They cater a bit towards the younger crowd but I found a great pair of pants on clearance & nice sweater too. I was excited at the chance of selling my old clothes instead of only donating them. I entered the store with two bags full of clothing and was immediately greeted by a female employee who asked if I had been there before. As I had not, I had to fill out a brief form including my license ID number. She was very nice and explained the process to me. Within ~15 minutes they had gone through my belongings (it was A LOT) and sintructed me what they wanted to buy (only one pair of sandals unfortunately) and what they did not. They gave me a fair price for the sandals so they were sold! I asked why the majority of the clothes/shoes were not good for selling and they explained that their demographic is between 14-22 yo (I'm 36!) and they prefer labels such as Forever 21, American Eagle etc as opposed to my bootcut Sevens. They were extremely nice, and not rude at all through the entire experience. I also read in the reviews that the store was "dirty" but that was not my experience at all. For all intents and purposes it's a clothes/shoes-only thrift store. Majority of items are used so not everything will be in brand new condition. I think that should be kind of obvious when entering this kind of store. It was organized rather well also. If I have more "appropriate" clothes to sell in the future I will def go back. read more

I quickly understood why Plato's Closet has such a low rating. I came here to sell a pair of boots since everyone always wonders why I use ThredUp to sell my old clothes/accessories. I figured what the hell, let me make a trip out to Commack and see what kind of money they could give me on the spot. Let me start this by saying this is definitely a thrift store and barely consignment. I love thrift stores but I love consignments more (think Second Time Around, which is GORGEOUS inside and everything is in great condition). The first thing I noticed about Plato's was the smell of mothballs. Second I was directed to a kiosk where you have to type in all your information (including your license ID) to begin selling. Your name pops up on a big screen afterwards so you can either check that or they'll text you when they're ready to see what you're trying to sell. I browsed while I waited. Rows and rows of items that range from horrible and filthy to mediocre but most definitely worn. I understand taking something that is worn and everyone deserves to have a shot at new-ish clothing but some of this stuff was downright unacceptable. I found a cute pair of Nikes in my size....COVERED in dirt. And they wanted $25 for them. Nope. All the purses had zippers that were about to break off. They claimed to have a boot event going on but all their boots were old Uggs that again were filthy or worn to the point they were beginning to develop holes. I was called about 15 minutes later for them to assess my boots. The girl working the register said they were pricing well beyond what the store usually sells for (which I thought was awesome). How much was I offered? $24. That's it for a pair of boots that 1) were never worn and 2) cost me almost $200 originally. And $24 is the max the store gives...Just an FYI. I took it because I didn't feel like bringing the boots back home and some cash is better than no cash. I only hope they go to a good home. They're most definitely the cleanest item in the store. Take pride in your store whether it's a thrift or otherwise. Clean up items. Don't accept things that are literally falling apart. I'll be sticking to ThredUp and Second Time Around moving forward. read more

Plato's Closet does have cute inexpensive items, however my items are RARELY sold to the store. I recently brought a few items with hopes of selling them (including knee-high leather boots that were worn once but we're not taken because it wasn't the season for boots.) You first have to sign in (and give your drivers license number, which makes me nervous), and then drop off your bag of clothes. I was told that the wait was 1-1.5 hours, so I left to run a few other errands. The review of my items went quick because I received a text within 20 minutes stating that my item evaluation was complete! I called Plato's Closet to see if they could give me a quote over the phone - I didn't want to drive back in case I wasn't making money! Unfortunately they can't give you a quote over the phone, so I drove all the way back to find out that none of my items were purchased. I went down the road to Goodwill to donate my clothes instead. I recommend using other apps/stores to sell your gently used clothes, however if you're looking for cute/cheap clothes, this is a good stop if you're in the area. read more

Cleaned out my boyfriend's closet and make an appointment to unload a ton of clothes. I was worried after reading other reviews that this would be a waste of time, many reviewers said they didn't take a lot of their women's clothes. This was my first time here and didn't know what to expect for selling men's clothes. I showed up for the appointment at the right time, but the wrong date! My mistake. They offered to have me wait and would take me if the next appointment slot was available. Very easy process. The clothing I brought was cleaned, folded and packed into bins. According to the rules, they are not accepting clothing in bags. I had two bins full, at least 100 items. They took my driver's licence number and my cell phone and sent me a text when they were done going through everything. In the end they accepted 25 items and I got $60. They let me know that they aren't taking dress shirts or casual tee-shirts. Most of the items they accepted were shorts, sweat pants, athletic shirts and sweatshirts. Brands they took were Adias, Fila, Tek Gear, Van Heusen, Russell, Reebok, Croft & Barrow. I usually send my clothes into thredup, but will come here next time when I clean out my closet. Very grateful the were able to squeeze me in even on the wrong date. Thank you! read more

If You're trying to sell your clothes, GO ELSEWHERE. What a waste of time. The first time I went, they told me my clothes were too mature (Loft, Gap) Okay fine... but second time my bag was filled with Guess jeans, juicy jackets, Hudson jeans, Abercrombie galore etc and these clothes were no good because they only take "mall brands." On their website they specifically say they want Tory Burch , Coach, etc... not mall brands .. and that my juicy jackets weren't spring and that was all they are accepting. I'm sure if I brought in UGG boots they would've accepted them ..and the employees are rude and pretentious.. why do you leave the bag in the mIddle of the floor? The whole thing is just backwards.. Well I purchased a boatload of items with my daughter. Took it home, removed the tags and washed everything - obviously washed because it's USED items. My daughter proceeded to wear one of the shirts to work the next day when someone pointed out to her that the security tag was STILL ATTACHED! She was mortified. I took the top back to the store with the receipt and the tag that we had removed to wash the shirt. I explained that they left the security tag on and asked them to remove it. I spoke to Melanie who identified herself as the manager. Melanie told me she can't remove the security tag because the price tag was already removed! Huh? I explained why the price tag was removed. (At this point I hear her tell her friend who works there "nice shirt"! )? Again I asked to please remove the security tag. Again Melanie states no. She tells me that the tag I removed was for a different size shirt and although I had the receipt for that shirt she can't remove the security tag for me. "Melanie, are you telling me you refuse to remove the security tag on a shirt I paid for and provided a receipt for?" "On a shirt that your store put the wrong size on?" She says yes. "So what do you want me to do. ". She says "Leave my store". I said I'll calll the police before I leave this store. Please remove the tag. She refused. By now customers behind me are rolling their eyes in disgust at how stupid this is and how obnoxious the store manager is behaving. I got on the phone and she overheard me asking for the phone number of the corporate office. Ultimately she removed the tag, threw it at me and said "don't come back". As an addendum, I did contact the corporate office to let them know how their representative behaved. I was told that the area operations manager, Ms Stephanie Gardner would call me to discuss. As of this writing I have not heard from her or received an apology from anyone. I deserve one. This was awful business practice. read more

I went in there to sell clothes and it was fucking horrible and I just got these clothes and never worn ever and they said it was faded and it still had tags on them and they where Nikes and Hollisters clothes which where very expensive. They said I can only give you 25 dollars and I was shocked and disgusted on how they do there business and they are not smart on how this actually works . I was doing a experiment to see what they would do if I bought new collection things from Nike and hollister and how much they would they sell it for and I was very disappointed. There was a Plato's Closet in Albany so after I graduated & cleaned out my apartment I brought a big bag of clothes over there and they bought it! Granted it was 2005, I was 21 and probably needed the cash. After a quick closet purge I thought I would relive the dream from 2005 and bring my clothes to Platos in Commack. What a waste of time. They say they're looking for specific things (which my giant bag of clothes did contain) but they didn't even look at everything? They're not interested in high(er) end brands, their selection process is very odd. I usually sell my items on Poshmark and have had great success! It takes some time but you'll get more money. 2 stars for Platos Closet because I picked up a pair of unworn Nike Dunks for $20. read more

I had a couple of hoodies and many of my items had never been worn still with the tag on them. the girl at the register told me they were only interested in buying 2 items because the others were "worn" and they only gave $10 for the two items. This place sucks to sell stuff to. They make you wait 2 hours and only take very few items for like $2 each even if they are mint and have tags on them still. If you want to sell clothing, use Ebay poshmark or Mercari or just donate to Savers or other thrift stores. It's not worth it. I heard about this place through an Ad that played on Pandora while I was in the middle of purging my closet. I usually just donate all of my clothes but I figured hey, if I can make a couple of bucks, why not . 15 mins later, I get there easily enough- park, walk in and I'll be honest, I was a little apprehensive after reading some of the reviews left on Yelp. The store was well organized, the items were in good condition some even had tags on still, honestly- I was bracing myself to be attacked by the smell of moth balls but thankfully it never happened- I also have allergies so what do I know . I went up to the counter holding my bag of clothes and one of the girls at the register greeted me and asked if I had ever been or sold to Platos Closet, I told her no so she walked me through the quick process of signing in and putting my information in on the iPad. (They asked for a drivers license or ID) Another girl came up a couple of minutes later and explained that they are mostly interested in buying clothes from the ages of 15-25 that have been in style for the past year and a half and that they would quote me on whatever items they could buy and I could refuse or accept the quote presented. The process was easy enough- they have a big screen by the register that lets you know roughly how long your wait time will be and they also text you when they are done pricing and going through your things. They were interested in buying 7 items and I was quoted at $29 and change. $29 in my pocket and hopefully someone else can enjoy the clothes. *This is my first experience selling clothing at a thrift shop/ consignment store and the reason I am giving them 5 stars is because I had a great experience there. The customer service was informative and quick, I like that they had the iPad set up so that you could fill out your own information, that they text you when they are done and print out a receipt showing you what they want and how much they are willing to pay you for it. While all of the staff was very friendly I had to wait almost two hours to sell my clothes. On top of the wait they did not even take any of them. All of the clothes were like-new and purchased within the past few years. They told me they couldn't take them because everything was faded and had stains, meanwhile most of it had only been worn a few times and some even still had tags on them. read more

The selection of clothing in this place is awful. I've been going to this place since they opened and it used to not be so bad, however the past few years have been terrible. They advertise high-end name brands in like-new condition, but when you walk in all you see is a collection of tattered or stained clothes from places like Rainbow, Forever 21, Walmart, etc. for almost the original selling price. The staff just hangs out talking to each other/on their phones and when you do get their attention they're extremely rude and talk down to you. I truly wish i would give this place 0 stars. I've been to this place a few times since they opened, and have never had a good experience. First off, all of the employees are NASTY. I went in today with THREE HUGE BAGS of clothes, probably 50-75 items in total. All fall clothes, some shoes, and all in amazing condition. I received a text that my assessment was complete, and went up to the desk. The man proceeded to tell me that they wanted to buy FOUR of my items. Out of three huge bags of clothes, they wanted to buy four things. So i asked, why out of all these clothes, you only want four things. He told me "some of the tags are older" and "we are not taking long sleeves" (its fall, why would you not be taking long sleeves). So I said is there any number i can call to complain because literally EVERY TIME i come to this place this happens. He responded no. Just no. So i said so let me get this straight you take DIRTY SHOES (all their shoes are disgusting) but not any of this stuff?? His response, "you can leave a review." So thats what I'm doing! I'm still going to try and find a number to call, this place is a joke! I will NEVER, be back and will NEVER recommend someone come here. Hope they close down. read more

This place is definitely better for buying than selling. I am within the age demographic. I had brought in about 50 items of clothing 80% from forever 21/charlotte russe/macy's, a fairly new style coach bag and some even with tags. In the end they only took five items. Two were sandals. I only made a total of $13 dollars. Buying items is not so bad though the place didn't smell and the staff was decent. They do have some good finds with some items with tags of them. The racks are a lottttttt to go through though. I found two pairs of shorts for $8 each which wasn't bad. Overall this place isn't for closet hauls it's for bringing in nice clothes that you buy that just doesn't fit or worn once. I use vinted to sell online/app and make more money. read more

Every time I have tried to sell something, they either tell me it's "out of style", they're "not taking these right now", they are too worn or, if they even take it, I get a total of like $4 or $5! I have tried selling brand new, designer brands & they snub their noses! Yet I don't get it.
