A narrow hole in the wall, maybe like 5-6 booth seats. The jelly donut was pretty delicious. The outer part of the donut is crispy and inner is soft filled with a generous amount of jelly. The sugar donut was good too. The coconut donut was a little disappointing; it didn't feel like whole donut was glazed enough to hold the coconut flakes. 6 donuts for $4.

This was a very cramped establishment. There was a small counter where 8 or so people could sit. Besides donuts, they also had breakfast sandwiches and other lunch items such as burgers and gyros. The prices were very reasonable as well. I ordered a dozen donuts ($7) and a cinnamon roll ($1). Below are my thoughts on each donut and the cinnamon roll. Cinnamon Roll - It was very big, but not enough glaze was added. The taste of the roll itself was decent. Sugared - This was the worst donut tried. There was not too much flavor to it with just the sugar. Honey Wheat - This was my first time trying a honey wheat donut. I really enjoyed it. There was just the right amount of honey that could be tasted. Chocolate - This provided plenty of a chocolate taste. The donut was not soft, but I think that was their intention for this particular donut. I enjoyed that texture. The same thought regarding texture could be said about the honey wheat one too. Glazed - This was very plain. Like the cinnamon roll, there was not much glaze present. Jelly - The jelly donut was probably my favorite. The dark jelly really stood out here and there was plenty of it inside. This particular donut appeared to be a mini sandwich of some sorts. Crème - There was plenty of crème filling. I am not a big crème filled donut fan to begin with, but this was not bad at all. Will I go back? Debatable.

A local spot that reminds me of old school breakfast spots in Brooklyn. A little hard to find- but donuts and coffee were tasty and inexpensive!

Breakfast at Old Skool Counter - coffee is good too

Fabulous donuts!! Stopped by to pick up a dozen and stayed for two amazing breakfasts! Husband and wife team kept refilling our coffee as we sat counterside. Reminded me of the 50's luncheonette - if you want donuts... get there before 9am for a great selection

This place is the definition of hole in the wall. The entire place consists of a counter with a around 5 seats. I went to get donuts at 11 am, and by then, they were out of almost everything. I got one of each, but they were all out of chocolate, coconut, and a few others. My favorites were the jelly and the original glazed. The yeast donuts were all very soft and fluffy. The prices here are also amazing. A dozen donuts are only $7, and the special donuts are $1 each. We got a mixture of the special and regular donuts for only $7. We were told to come by at 7 am when the donuts are hot and fresh. Next time, I'll make sure to stop by earlier!

    Classic jelly donut. YUM!!!

Delicious!!! Maybe a hint too much baking soda, but really good! Old school yummy. It will be a regular stop on my trips to the Central Jersey area.

Well after reading about this little gem of a donut shop in Plainfield in nj dot com , I stop and try it out ! Wow amazing doughnuts jelly and cream seems to be the popular two ! There are variety of 15 different types max . They were 70 cents each and when you buy more the price comes down. Note after they bake the their amount of doughnuts once they sell out of that type , there will not be any more to the next day . Learn that on the next visit . The place is a dive and tiny as hell. Next to a fish market and post office . On the street parking meters. There is a parking lot in the back where you can park for free . Note cash only here . Please note if you looking to need amount of 12 or more best to pre order them the day before they sell out quick !!!! Just want to note I hit this spot for lunch they make a real nice beef or chicken gyro for only 4.10 . It was on the money and pack !

Picked up three donuts when making a quick stop close by Plainfield. This place is small and really caters to quick bites as seating is mostly countertop bar stools. Business seemed to be pretty good as having arrived around 11:25am, all those bar stools were occupied with customers. The donuts...... The Honey Wheat was quite yummy with a sweet sugar frosting/glaze on top. The doughnut had a slight crisp to the outer layer and inside was a pretty light and buttery dough. Jelly donut was excellent and really worth buying for any first timers here. The jelly tasted like blackberry having a tame sweetness and a distinct texture, not gloopy, but not too smooth either; striking a perfect middle ground. Despite being fairly thick, the dough was light and again had a nice hint of buttery flavor. Thankfully, the powdered sugar topping was not too sweet; complimenting more than dominating the overall donut taste. The cream-filled donut was very solid, again the dough having the positive attributes I mentioned for both previous donuts, but in this guise filled with a smooth cream that I think was a Bavarian style cream as it was light with a hint of vanilla. Finally, considering the quality and size of my three donuts, the price for three donuts was a pretty amazing $2.00. Try that at one of NYC's gourmet donut shops, which usually charge $3+ for one donut!

Great little local donut shop, only downside is you need to get there early in the morning for any of the fresh ones.

They have many options to choose from that are ready to go and will most likely find something for everyone. I have been going to this bakery since I was a teen and I can positively say that the service is always top notch. All the staff is very helpful, tolerant, and will cater to customers' needs to the best of their abilities. They have made all my cakes look awesome whenever I've asked for writing on them. The way the cake gets decorated is very satisfying. I can recall the bakery being so busy I would have to wait at least 5-10 minutes before getting service but these days with other great options, the business at this bakery has unfortunately gone down. This has lead them to have less baked goods out and it makes the bakery look a bit empty. Nevertheless, you are likely to find what you're looking for. I hope to see this bakery stay in business for long time, as I have seen many other inde shut down in the recent years. This will remain my go to bakery, specifically when I need a cake in a pinch.

I haven't tried too many cakes in the area so I can't truly compare to give it a full 5 star rating BUT the comments I hear a lot of is they use fresh fruit in their cakes. I usually get birthday cakes from Asian bakeries where fresh fruit is expected so that was an interesting comment to make from my POV. The fruit birthday cakes I've had from here are pretty good. Not too sweet and the most interesting fruit fillings I've had in cake - banana! Among other fruits. The cake isn't as light/airy as I'm used to but not bad at all. The buttercream is on the sweeter side for me but okay if you eat it with the cake and don't leave it until the end. It's not a terribly thick layer. But the cakes were super colorful and it's a lot of food coloring with how saturated the colors are. Your mouth and tongue will be stained if you're not careful. Having said that, I ordered an Oreo cake because that's why my kid wants. BUT I did request that instead of buttercream on the outside, it'll be whipped cream. Still buttercream on the inside though. I'll update this review after the party as it hasn't happened yet. This is a shop that sort of takes you back when you walk in. It's located in a corner shopping center of sorts and they have a shared parking lot so no need to hunt for parking. It has a nostalgic feel with display cases along much of the length, refrigerated sections for drinks (some were Asian which surprised me) and ice cream cake. Plus a wall of candles and birthday cake decorations because they do take a lot of orders for special occasions. No extra frills and nothing for decor's sake. There was a steady line when I went on Sunday morning. Two doors, one designed to be the entrance and the other the exit (but there isn't a police so use whichever door, but the line starts at the entrance door). As you walk up to the counter, someone will help you out. They've got all sorts of things from pastries to cookies, cakes, cupcakes, cannoli's, pies... even a tres leches section that was woefully empty. The only thing is for some odd reason, there are signs of what the items were, but absolutely no prices were posted in the display cases. At least none that I was aware of. I was passed onto the manager to take my order. It took a little time because I'm pretty sure she also decorates cakes and some people were waiting on them but I eventually got my order in. A 9" Oreo cake (for up to 16 people) with whipped cream exterior and birthday message is about $75. I added on a tres leches on a whim - they sold out early but a new batch just finished so I got one straight from the kitchen - was roughly $10. Receipts are old school, orders taken on a paper pad with a carbon copy given to you. I've had a number of tres leches cakes before and this is one of a kind! Deliciously moist, whipped topping - and the cake is halved. In between, they put fruit in there! Plus a maraschino cherry on top and cinnamon dusted over it. It was nowhere near "too sweet" and I rather enjoyed it. A lot. In fact, I'm thinking of calling in to see if I can get some for the party for the adults. My picky daughter loved it. Overall, I have a pretty good impression of this bakery and I'm looking to trying more items over time.

There is street parking…read moreand a few parking lots in the area so we just parked at one, wanted about, and also made a stop here. As a nod to the name (Kirshenbaum is German for cherry tree), there are little cherries everywhere inside from signs to wallpaper. Ample seats, natural light, friendly staff, plus delectable treats make this place a good one to stop at. They also serve light bites but as we were sort of hopping from one place to another on a Sunday, I only ordered a few sweet treats. BLACK FOREST: my daughter picked this, likely because she thought it was a chocolate cake. But it was not your average chocolate cake. A good sized slice with moist cake, cherries, and dark chocolate bits throughout, I highly enjoyed this one. It's perfectly sweet - though I admit my daughter finished the exterior layer of frosting so the thin layered in between the cake were ideal for my taste buds. It was a bit too elevated for my daughter who only really wanted your regular chocolate cake. MATCHA CRUFFIN: This is a croissant-muffin filled with matcha cream, rolled in sugar. The laminated dough was packed so not like your airy-but-crispy-exterior croissant, nor was it noticeable buttery, but it did do its job by keeping its shape and the layers helped give its name. It was lovely to pull apart, with a nice, chewy texture. The filling wasn't exactly in the center (I shared this with my husband) so I dipped a little into the filling (borderline reminded me of pastry cream) that my husband got. It's light but also has a very nice matcha flavor that comes through. RASPBERRY LYCHEE PIE: I love pie and I was happy to find a uniquely flavored one here especially since it reminded me of my favorite ice cream flavor in Europe at Haagen Dazs years back (rose raspberry lychee) so I pounced on it. First off, this is definitely a mousse pie. We're vegetarian so a part of me wonders if gelatin was used to make this so I likely won't get this a second time without me asking the necessary questions - but it is good. As with most mousse confections, this is light and delicate in a way. Airy. Still substantial that I didn't feel cheated out of my money but not too filling. Nothing overpowered each other and the flavors and textures worked together beautifully. There were chunks of raspberries but I don't recall actual bits of lychee fruit in there, though you do get the flavor of it in there. I absolutely love the interesting flavors here and the items I got. I especially am a fan of how everything is perfectly sweet. I have a sweet tooth, but only for things that aren't too sweet and this is completely up my alley. They do have gluten free options but nothing extensive. And I'm pretty sure they include eggs. I have a kid with multiple food allergies and he couldn't have anything here so I got him a bottle of apple juice and he was content with it. I'll definitely stop by again to try more items and get a drink to go with. Maybe get my daughter a cookie since I hear they're pretty good.

The service was patient and friendly as we took some time on what to order. I tried four different offerings. Double Chocolate Chip Cookie ($4.25) - This was a dark chocolate cookie with chocolate chip chunks. This was a good size, but it just fell short for me. I liked the chewy middle and texture, but it just felt like more chocolate could have been tasted as crazy as that sounds. Strawberry Jam Donut ($3.85) - This was a brioche donut filled with their own strawberry jam. The strawberry jam was the lone highlight here. It was great, but the actual donut was not. It was also a little small for the price. I just did not think I liked the brioche type of donut here. It needed to be sweeter, but that jelly, exceptional. Cheesy Jalapeno Croissant ($7) - This was filled with mozzarella cheese, pickled jalapeno peppers, and was topped with an everything seasoning. This was definitely the best product tried of the day. The croissant was flaky and light while the inside had plenty of jalapenos and mozzarella. The jalapenos of this particular one were quite spicy, which was nice. The everything topping was not needed I thought. Gluten Free Strawberry Lemon Cake Slice ($7.25) - This was a lemon vanilla cake with strawberry buttercream. This was a nice sized slice. If I did not know this was gluten free before eating, I do not think I would have been able to tell. Having said that though, the cake slice as a whole was just okay. The cake had good texture, and the buttercream was nicely done, but it just was alright and did not excite me. Maybe, I was missing the gluten! Will I go back? Possibly.
